Amazing how Liverpool acquired those two missing elements in Van Dijk and Fabinho and are now crowned European Champions and pushed till the end for a Premier League title.

So Klopp got Van Dijk and Fabinho, a ball-playing central defender and a 6 that can dictate more from deep, so they become title contender and Champions League winner.

Ben Pantera Keita is an 8, not a 6
crazy7chameleon If he's as good as everyone says, surely he can adapt and play 6 in this team. Otherwise if he can't, he's seems like a needless signing.
Keita was making over 5 tackles and interceptions per game in the bundesliga last season - more than nearly every midfielder in the premier league. Even though he isn't a holding player, he would certainly help cover for Henderson's defensive duties, thus allowing him to sit deep and start attacks.
Moreover, Keita's stamina, workrate, and technicality means that he is excellent going forwards as well; he *also* averaged over 3 successful dribbles per game last season (more than Hazard), and scored 8 goals in the Bundesliga (more than any other midfielder).
Given that Klopp looks likely to withdraw Coutinho into a no. 8 position in a midfield 3 next season, having a midfielder who can support both him and Henderson next season, and improve the attacking and defensive dynamic of the team as a whole, would be a marked improvement. Keita is *that* player, and much more.
Although he won't be sold this summer, if we have a strong campaign this season, and remain in the champions league spots for the season after, Keita may well want to join us next summer - when his 48 million euro buyout clause becomes effective. Here's hoping!

this system is so good when teams are trying to attack us, but i still worry about teams who sit back and would happily take a 0-0 draw, like say West Brom or Manchester United
Conor Wall City have the same problem when teams like stoke just sit back and accept a draw against us, we find it so hard breaking them down, hopefully mendy and Walker will change that

I'm a Liverpool fan and i am happy with our starting 11 but i don't think we have the squad depth like City and Chelsea to challenge for the league all it takes is one nasty injury for Mane or Salah and the system is messed.
Loving these videos. Two recommendations: 1/ maybe it's just me, but I find the text on the left-side is too close to the margin. It's nicer to read if it's indented a little. 2/ sometimes the text doesn't summarise and is nearly verbatim. It's better for the viewer if the bullet-points just pick out key words and ideas. Otherwise: top-notch!

you forgot to mention this play-style is really weak against defensive team like Burnley and Sevilla, they tend to stay deep and using long ball to counter
Sevilla is not a defensive team. Against teams that park the bus if you want to call it, we need some world class quality which can score us that goal out of nothing, we barely have any world class players.

A defensive midfielder doesn't need to be fast. He is strong and can tackle which us exactly what we need
no. he is too slow on the turn. average in the build up. btw read up on what really makes a great DM. tackling is a last resort for bad DMs who cannot intercept. interception is key.

The Writer Critic you need to be quick and strong in the prem. The type of strength that just doesn't get knocked off the ball. I would've gone for Kessie but he's just joined AC Milan. Emre Can and Henderson are good enough for now in that position

Klopp came out i think it was yesterday and said that coutinho can play about 4 roles with him moving back into the 6 a few times and playing long balls to the flanks. WIth Salah and Mane upfront he can do that more meaning he will be playing those delicious through balls we know and love from 13/14 season.
Coutinho can not and will not ever play the 6. He might end up in that position a few times in a match when we have possession but he's never going to be a DM.

"Top" Spanish and German teams (and maybe Juve and PSG) are too strong, whereas most EPL teams would smash anything else. Chelsea during its best time could beat a weak Barcelona.

+Martin Luther In that year, with that Chelsea, yes. Tactics-wise Chelsea were strong against tika-taka, both of which Bayern and Barca used. Indeed, they won, fair and square, but it's not like they completely destroyed them either. I am talking about overall statistics in the recent decades.
Just so you know, I am a Chelsea fan, but you just have to acknowledge the utter difference between the aforementioned Top Europe dominating clubs.

Liverpool have a ball playing defender in Matip. The need for another CB is to improve Liverpool's defence with a better CB and its depth since our backups of Gomez and Klavan are not good enough for the champions league. Moreover Henderson is very good at dictating play as a number 6, his injury hitting Liverpool hard last year, so I think overall Liverpool need to improve depth.

Absolutely right, Liverpool badly need that ball-playing CB. #6, I don't know if it is as important. Our midfield is doing great at the moment, and looking at the way our fullbacks have come through in pre-season, it wouldn't be a stretch to see Milner finally moving out of there and getting back to his preferred midfield role. With him adding more numbers to the midfield, I don't see the importance of a Naby Keita type of player - we can always try for him next season or in January.

i think klopp might target winter/summer signings of the defensive unit pairing of the more defensive minded virgil van dijk and ball playing david luiz, or someone else who is ball player, but i think luiz is unsettled at chelsea so he might actually be open to a move to liverpool, while van dijk has been a known target for liverpool this past summer
I really hope Keita comes back eventually. He's that last piece they're looking for to make this team virtually unstoppable
Would love to see a break-down of the tactics used by PSG in their 4-0 win over Barca last season, and perhaps why it didn't work in the second leg. I've never seen quite such a turn around or Barca so thoroughly stomped in a match.

feel like Henderson is one of the best defensive midfielders in the league, people may laugh at that, but Klopp has turned him into an amazing player and if he stays fit people will definitely see that

With our current midfield and defence we are not a threat for a title challenge. Seems like we've given up on Keita and it's unlikely we're going to buy Dijk. Why are we wasting time, we should move on and find other targets, we always do this shite.

That was my point. Because we don't have a class DM, we have a weak midfield axis, and we've been overrun by lesser oppositions as a result of this.
kushal karki Dijk should sign this upcoming week I believe. And our midfield is excellent, easily competing with Europe's best. We are powerful, dynamic, and very quick - yes 4 comps will be difficult, but after sorting out our backline, no reason we can't be challenging
Christian Flores As you saw in the video, we lack a player who can dictate the ball from the deep. Our midfield players are very good, but have too often been vulnerable to counter attacks by lesser oppositions. It's why we were knocked out of two trophies in the space of a week and it's why we failed to maintain a title challenge in 2016/17. If we get Dijk, perfect. But can't ignore strengthening the midfield axis.
kushal karki Idk, I think Hendo was pretty class and his numbers were up there with the best of the league. Sure, if we got a world class player like a busquests or Kroos we'd improve, but which side wouldn't?

Should've gone for someone like Bakayoko, or maybe even Fabinho. But for sure they need a CB with good footwork and passing ability. Maybe a marquinnos or VVD
I don't think we need a creative 6. Our midfield is quite forward thinking and buying a creative 6 that doesn't have the dynamism of henderson might make it even less defensive. However I do feel we need more creativity from deeper but that will and can come from one of the 8's. This season it will be coutinho lallana as the 8's and henderson sitting deeper.
I just don't know how this style can work against sides who don't want to play the ball. When we come up against teams who sit back and invite pressure we are lost for ideas. Hopefully the addition of Salah and moving Coutinho back into midfield will help solve this but it's becoming a serious problem. We all saw at the back end of last season how almost every team now sets up to sit back against us, and it really costs us.

I won't necessarily say we need a 6 but an 8 who's capable of linking up the defense with attack - almost like what Gundogan's job was at Dortmund, under Klopp. Lallana for the most part is excellent on the press and defense but honestly lacks that vision and skill to execute the final ball and Gini Wjinaldum is too passive in possession. Also not to mention the transfer moves on Mahoud Dahoud, Petr Zielinski and most recently Naby Keita - all ball playing mobile no. 8s with technique, vision and eye for goal (in terms of scoring and/or assisting).
There's a reason Phil Coutinho has been dropped to that central role recently, I think the gap is evident for some creativity there but in the shape of an 8 rather than a 6. Emre Can and Henderson are capable no. 6s.
The problem is that when the opposite team counter attack as dm job is to not let the opponent get close to the cb and to the gk that is Henderson job destroy the opponent game sometimes he is not doing that

This explains why Liverpool want VVD sooo bad. Strong but technically adept top level CBs seem to be a rarity in the game today. It reminds me of how Barca pursued Thiago Silva as long as they did.

So "counter pressing" is the same as "gegenpressing" just like all the formation variations now a days are basically exactly the same as old ones but we just like to make things more complicated.
The only mistake of the video is that they lack the number 6. I think henderson does quite well and can Will grow in that role aswell. The number 8 next.to lallana is the only problem. I love wijnaldum but sometimes it feels like.he plays with shackles on. By this i mean he plays a little bit too cautious. Either he Will e unleashed next year or Keita is indeed the answer.. we.shall see

Great videos (and I hate to be that guy) but it's really irritating that so many people mispronounce Firmino's name. There is no 'h' in his name. It's Firmi-NO, not Firmin-HO (like in Coutinho's name.) There is no 'y' sound!

Shohidul Islam he already does play Firmino as a false nine. He has the freedom to drop in behind and play between the line or drift wide. That's why you see him playing slightly deeper and linking play or driving forward from deeper. A false nine is put simply a forward who drifts and sits deeper forcing a centre back out of position leaving space in behind, or staying in position leaving a un-marked playmaking/goal scoring influence. A false nine formation is a FIFA thing not a real thing, it's a tactical role a centre forward plays. and can play in various set ups.
I'm from the future that you predicted. And yes Liverpool won the league the year after winning ucl and are still dominating for a few more years
The obviously problems are the defensive side of things when playing this way.
Liverpool do lack a Tall and dominant ball playing CB. And in addition, the system is highly strenuous physically. See Spurs collapse at the end of the 2015-16 season.
But a joy to watch when playing well.

Fairly obvious how to counter it though. Concede possession. That way you can't be counter pressed. And this is what most teams who have got a result against us have done.
