Just discovered this video. Contrary to many DIY canister filters, it's obvious this one has been throughoutly thought! Up to using a siphon as an inlet so it's easier to fill the filter. I have no problem believing it actually works in real conditions.

I have made several Canisters and all sort of filter over the years. BUT, I always had issues creating a good flexible inlet assembly for smaller canisters, today I learnt that too. Amazing video like always. Waiting for more such wonderful videos.

I have made something like this for a pond. The blue pump of the hose though Is on the top. It's quite a big filter so it makes it restart it, if the water is drained.
Since the water pump is out side it gives more room for filter media with a pvc going right to the bottom with an L joint and the out flow is from the top of the filter to create a water fall. It's a random DIY though but works well and serves the purpose. 🤣

awesome video thanks, just 1 question. we have a lot of power failures in South Africa 😩. will the container keep filling up when the power goes off or not????
It will depend on the quality of the container. If a very good-quality airtight / leakproof container is used, water will not leak under any circumstances. So before making the filter, you need to check that the container is completely airtight / leakproof or not, just like I showed in the video. Thank you 😊

how will it work once after there is a power cut, as the water input is not initiated by pump and is done by syphoning. will the water stop flowing? or what will happen?

Canister filters / power filters cannot clean waste from the bottom of the tank. But if any waste gets near the inlet pipe of the canister filter, the filter will suck it up.

This filter is suitable for 15 to 20 gallon tanks and can be used in tanks up to 30 gallons. Thanks.
What happens if power off...? It will over flow? Or stop suction?
You need to use a container that is 100% airtight or leakproof, then water will not overflow from the container under any circumstances. I have given the link of the container I used in the description, you can check that out.

Brother user UV light inside the container it will helps to more clear water.
No need to use a UV light, this filter can make the water crystal clear without it also.

Why not? Just make sure the container is 100% leakproof. Also, use a powerhead with a water flow appropriate to the size of your aquarium.

I have my thoughts to do this to 3 aquatiums of mine (60l,50l and 149l), do you think this is enogh for all of my three aquatiums or do i need more than 1000l(flow rate) powerhead or less?
For the 50L and 60L tanks, you can go with powerheads that have flow rates of 400-500 l/H, and for your 149L tank, go with a 1000 l/H powerhead.

It will depend on how powerful submersible pump/power-head you use. If you use a pump with a high flow rate, you can place the filter under your aquarium.

I am trying to make a canister using a 6 inch pvc pipe . Not able to find gasket to close it any idea which one we can use as o ring or gasket
This is a big problem, we don't get any essential items from our local stores when needed. However, your can use silicone glue to seal the joints.

As the container is airtight / leakproof, water will not overflow from the container under any circumstances. And also you don't have to refill the container repeatedly.
I have made this cannister filter works brilliantly, i have made it using this same lock and seal container, however the water level jn my filter keeps decreasing till the head of the submersed pump, anyone who has made this kind of filter has any idea why this is happening ?? @MadeByKM
If air bubbles in the aquarium water are sucked up by the filter intake, it will gradually accumulate inside the filter, at the top. So, if this happens, you can turn off the filter and open a hinge of the container and let the air out and then close it.

I have a 17 gallon tank with 9 neon tetras. Everything is fine except the powerhead filter. It is too strong for them as they come under immense stress when I turn it on. Can I solve this problem by turning my powerhead filter into a canister filter as shown here? or do I need a sponge filter?

As long as the inlet position is lower than the outlet then the water should get sucked into the filter right?
The position of the inlet should be well below the water level so that the pump can suck the water in the filter. But it has nothing to do with the position of the outlet. As long as the inlet is well under water, the water will be sucked by the filter, even if the position of the outlet is below the inlet.

I haven't had any problems, but silicone glue can be used on the joints if there are any leaks.

Is airtight container really must.because i thought of using a container which is having a small air leakage in its top cap. Or should i buy a new airtight one .

I bought the same item for Rs 497, now the price has increased. It is an excellent leakproof container. You can also look for similar containers at your local market/store. Maybe you can get it cheaper than online shopping sites. Just make sure it is completely leakproof before use.

Agar ise bohut achchhee tarah se store kiya jay, to yah 6-12 maheene tak achchha rahega. Use karne ke bad iska pura nozzle se shuru karke body tak achche tarah se plastic aur cello tape se wrap karna parega, taki thorisi hawa bhi andar na ja sake. Sab kuch depend karega ki ise kitni achche tarah store kiya jata hai.

You can use it, but if you find that it is creating strong water flow in the tank, you should use a relatively less powerful submersible pump that is suitable for your tank.
