I can’t stop watching your hellboy videos! I love them and i get the sense that you just so greatly understand and appreciate the spirit of the comic books
I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't think this second trailer fixed everything. I'm seeing so many comments saying things like, "Now THIS is comic Hellboy!" and keep thinking, "Has ANYONE read the comics?!" Because it doesn't feel like Hellboy at all. One thing you didn't touch on that I felt was really important is that the Hellboy I know would NEVER punch Daimio to change him into the jaguar and then mock him for it. That's the exact kind of situation that would make comic Hellboy very sad and he would be super respectful about it. He even left the BPRD because they mistreated Roger. Comic Hellboy hates when darkness like that takes over good people's lives because it's exactly what he's trying to avoid in himself. Because above all, Hellboy is a good person who avoids letting darkness in at all costs.
I don't imagine anybody will ever do a live-action (+CGI) movie Hellboy that catches the tone of the comics. Partly, I think, it's because the form is too literal. There's a spectrum in Hellboy that ranges from pulp-almost-camp to beautiful-tragic-mythological. You'd need a film-maker who has a much more stylized aesthetic than most CGI fests are willing to be. An animated movie might do it (even though the two cartoon movies are miles from the comics, they still came closer than the Del Toro - I can imagine an animator catching the tone). But probably the only way to really get Hellboy would be in a series, because part of what makes the comics so rich is how the universe forms around Hellboy as the stories get written. A mythology is built right in front of us over the course of reading Hellboy (whether you read them chronologically or at random), and suddenly you look around an realize that there is a huge story, made of thousands of other stories, with dozens of compelling characters as far as the eye can see. Meanwhile, a commercial movie grabs a melange of characters from all over the Hellboy/BPRD universe and shoves them together for 90 minutes. Mush.
David Bloom I always thought an HBO series would be perfect for adapting the Hellboy comics. HBO wants a fantasy series to replace GOT, there you go, you give them another Lore Heavy, gothic horror fantasy series based on a series of books.
@@nastylittlecritter I suspect it would still take a miracle to make a lot of fans happy (myself included). But, yeah, I think it would have to be someone like HBO, and a producer with a real vision. 'Cause if people ever saw what Hellboy can be, their jaws would drop and they'd get on board. (Well, enough would! I have to believe.)

I have a similar feeling, from mixing Nimue with Hecate to Captain Daimio being way too superhero-like instead of a dark secret to Profesor Trevor Bruttenholm acting so different from his comic counterpart. No thought about the final part with Hellboy/the dragon and hell on Earth?
Mike Mignola says this is closer what he & Duncan Fegredo produced in the comics & he has been more involved in the screenplay than he was under Del-Toro. Thats good enough for me.
If that's really true it makes me wonder if Mignola made Hellboy so good by accident. But I actually think he is just saying that because he needs to in order to get fans on board. This seems like the kind of stuff he wouldn't like.

The BPRD would make a GREAT Netflix or Amazon series. Those two media providers seem to be much more will to take chances on properties, and allow creative freedom.
I am guessing studio interference. I heard the original concept was ALOT darker and they made them lighten it up and go more deadpool/suicide squad with it (which was exactly why Del Toro wanted total creative control).
Finally... i find someone has same opinion as mine... i just dont find this new trailer any better than the first one, i hate the music choice on both trailers... that being said, i would still watch it when it comes out.
I think live-action Hellboy movies will never fully work out. I think to do the comics justice it needs to be a series on Netflix or HBO or something. I like the way this Hellboy looks honestly and some of the visuals are cooler than the Del Toro ones but I agree the tone is too close to those. I feel like this team wanted to do the comics more justice but and if they had time for a long-term narrative I think they could do it but I think since it’s a movie and people know how the last ones were they were probably “forced” kind of to make it similar to those because unfortunately I think more people know the first two movies more than the comics.
