- In 2014, Skip Bayless went viral for predicting that former Texas A&M and Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel would pan out in the NFL. However, former NFL analyst Merril Hoge disagreed with him as the two debated on First Take. The debate recently resurfaced, after Hoge tweeted: 'This is why watching tape is vital to evaluating players and their ability to transition to the NFL. No STAT can EVER tell you about a college players ability to play in the NFL and no award or championship they won means they can play in the NFL.' Skip now explains his resurfaced Manziel debate with the former NFL player.

Tell any NFL HC, GM or Director of player personnel that watching All 22 coaches film is not vital in the evaluation process and you’ll get laughed out the room. You’re actually bragging about your Baker vs Darnold prediction? Baker is on his 4th team in 2 years and is close to losing QB1 to Kyle Trask. You think we should be impressed with that prediction? You said Tebow, Manziel and Mayfield would all be franchise QBs and none of them finished their rookie contracts with the team that drafted them. I mean does involved with the NFL actually take you seriously…? Because I haven’t met a single person who’s a fan of the NFL or NBA that does.

I’ve seen the Hoge interview. He didn’t give any caveats. He evaluated Johnny on his passing skills and was spot on. Just give it up, Skip.

But that certainly doesn’t make Hoge’s opinion any less valid. But what do I know? I’m not even on television. Therefore, I must be wrong.

Merrill watches and studies the ins and out of all 22 coaches tape, which is basically like someone giving you a math textbook with all of the problems, potential ways to solve said problems, and the correct answers in the back.
Skip, self proclaimed football aficionado, said he watches only live games. Translating directly to someone sitting in class and taking a pop quiz at the end. It’s momentary, short-term, highlight remembrance.
I’m not saying Skip couldn’t be right OR wrong, but there’s a reason his show has thrived on entertainment over facts. He’s a show biz character. Johnny Carson of Sports. An all-time great one, respectfully. But that’s all.

I watched that LIVE. Merril was the ONLY person who was completely out on manziel. I think jaws was at first too but then he started to drink the kool aid lol. Merrill also said Khalil Mack over Clowney.

Skip just like guys... he never goes through a full evaluation of a player like scouts do. Watching guys make plays is 1 thing, but breaking down a players arm speed, footwork, attitude, decisiveness, the way they see the field is a whole different ball game.
I think a lot of people conflate watching film on players with watching them on TV.
What a lot of these analysts fail to realize is…..IT’S OK TO BE WRONG!! I’m not sure if they know but, no one is 100 for 100 in sport takes. It’s a prediction.
I loved Baker coming out of the 2018 Draft. That being said it's over... You can't still have the "jury out" after 5 years
True. Also in Mayfield's case Cleveland had a revolving door of coaching staff. He couldn't get acclimated as it would change from year to year and he was a rookie.

Skip didn’t say anything about Johnny’s possible substance abuse issues on the day of the draft. He was 100% in on Manziel, he didn’t have any contingencies. He guaranteed Manziel would be bigger than Lebron in Cleveland. He didn’t start his comment with, “If Johnny has substance issues I out on him”. He did not say any of that until Manziel flamed out. Manziel stated in his documentary that his coach and scouts questioned his work ethic before the draft. But Skip never brought that up. He guaranteed Johnny would be great and “wreck the league”. He did wreck the league, but not in the way Skip guaranteed. Skip is a liar who always hedges his bets.

When you watch the clip in question with Hoge giving real honest evaluation and commentary, the rest of the panel is dumbfounded like they have never seen REAL HOENST criticism.
