Been playing banjo and now use six string and 12 string guitars in open G. I've been looking for this information, in a simple format,... to be able to play in other keys. Thank you for keeping it basic. Good views of both hands. VERY helpful!
Well, mine is actually C GDGBD, that's the drop C part. But I'm not really a student of tunings, there are many out there and many different names for them. Thanks for visiting and commenting. Fran
And to this day I thought I was the only one playing in this tunint. Darn it :-) well maybe I'm one of a few who have this on the electric guitar? Anyway it sounds wonderful and almost anything can be played in this tuning. Thanks for the video
I've been surprised at how widely this tuning is used. But you're right, you are the first I've heard of playing drop C on an electric guitar. Thanks for stopping by, Fran
I'm glad it's widely used. It's a wonderful tuning and it deserves to be at least as popular as the standard tuning. Yeah, I might be the first electric ambassador :-) in the metal music world when you say dropped C, they usually referring to a standard tuning dropped to C-G-C-F-A-D
I’ve been playing Taro patch so long I can’t even use standard anymore. But I always found the low D kinda useless. Till I discovered this tuning about 2 years ago. It’s my standard. The only thing I ever vary is tuning the B up to a C.
@@homebrewedmusic no actually not familiar but I will check it out. My roots are central Texas open G is a very common tuning there but most just remove the low D string. I’m a pro but guitar has not been my main gig. Until recently.
Overall, the strings in open D are just a little looser than in open G. The second and third strings make a noticeable difference, they're both lowered in open D. Fran
Hi, I am beginner, old geezer. I like drop D and am thinking of going that way. Then you mentioned that any chord can be played by barring the proper 6th string note. That sounds handy. Are the strings tighter in open G than in open D?
Aloha and mahalo Fran! I'm a displaced island boy and have slowly been going back to my roots, beginning with slack key for the past five years. Primarily in taropatch but slowly learning Open C and Hi'ilawe. Do you have any favorite right hand patterns?
I don't use right hand patterns, Lanakila. The closest I come to a pattern is trying to keep my thumb pushing out the rhythm, while my fingers try to find the melody and decoration. Fran

Thank you for shedding light on this C tuning. It sounds wonderful. I have only played a little so far in Taro Patch Open G.
Thanks for visiting, hope you enjoy your slack key journey. Adding the drop C to your bag of tricks opens up a lot of possibilities.

Drop C is a very cool tuning indeed. Do you do a lot of Leonard Kwan stuff?

so many places say drop c is cgcfad, but you have it as dgdgbd - yours seems to be and sound right so what are the other people doing? Thanks
aloha again...correction on the tuning in my post. It is actually Drop C...not Open C....big difference, yeah?

Nice - thank you! I have been doing compositions in Slack C, C G C G C E which I really like. 'Iao
straying a bit afield of Hawaiian style, singer-songwriter Peter Case does some amazing things in this tuning, which is his go-to these days...
Thanks for the reminder. I've heard of Peter Case and his use of drop C but thanks to you I just gave his stuff a listen.
Fran
I want that guitar! What brand and model is it? What strings and gauge?
I never knew...
got it
Running on empty uses this tuning
Thanks, Marc. I've been surprised to hear of other songs that use this, I guess that once you've got open G this tuning kind of seems logical.
Fran
More play and less talk. Jus' Press!
There's a whole lot of playing going on at my slack key channel: th-cam.com/users/franguidry

wish the music teachers I had growing up taught me useful stuff like this -- but it's never too late! Thanks, haha! :)
Ian, thanks for commenting. I hope you have a lot of fun with this idea.
