  • In this video, I am going to show you how to play your guitar in open g tuning. You are going to learn several ways to play open g tuning chords that sound amazing. Not only will you get beautiful sounding music with these open g chords, they will also be simple to play, resulting in sounds that won’t be possible to replicate in a standard tuning.
    Open G Bar Chords:
    First, I show you how to play open g bar chords on your guitar. These chords only require one finger to play, leaving your other fingers free to add all sorts of cool extensions and embellishments. I will take you through an open g bar chord progression using some of these shapes and approaches.
    Open G Drone Chords:
    Next, I take you though some beautiful sounding open g chords that take advantage of the irregular open string droning sound you get with open tunings. These shapes offer up all kinds of amazing sounds and are super simple to play, some shapes only requiring a single finger.
    Open G Blues Shuffle:
    Finally, I show you how incredibly easy it is to play a blues shuffle in open g tuning. Much simpler compared to standard tuning.

    Nice lesson, thanks, my playing standard tuning was going no where due to having had surgery on my hands for bent fingers ,Dupytrens disease, which made chord stretches impossible, after surgery my fingers are uncurled but no longer straight enough for regular chords in standard tuning, but I can in open g make some really sweet sounds without having to make impossible stretches. I just got my stiches out a couple of weeks ago and have a guitar back in my hands after months of just looking at them. I can't make a fist yet but I can hold the neck and bar chord as shown, once the swelling goes down I will get a slide back on and I will be torturing my dog again, I will be going over this video a few more times, thanks again.

    Hi
    Great video, you've revitalised my interest in Open Tunings, which I havent used for some time.
    Its a really good reason to own more than one Guitar, so one can be left in Open tuning, ready to go.
    If you use just the one guitar, keep some spare strings handy as continually retuning will eventually break the string,
    I suggest Big Yellow Taxi as a tune to start with, as Joni plays this in open, its not so difficult and sounds super cool.

      "You have a very good teaching style, express yourself clearly, and patiently build a system of facts for the viewers. I can only commend you exceptionally for that. As a longtime teacher, school principal, and doctor of educational sciences, I, as a methodologist, would recommend a camera angle from above on the left hand and neck of the guitar, from the guitarist's perspective. I believe that this would further assist viewers and elevate your lessons to a new level of quality. So, a recording of the left hand from the guitarist's perspective, rather than from the front."

So I play with left-hand guitars; so my right hand is on the neck ( I can't handle the plectrum with my right hand). And my hands are already small. So I have major difficulties with bare chords and wide finger chords over 3 or 4 frets. So I was already looking for a totally different tuning with mainly open tuning on strings and with easy chord patterns. I play mainly rock and blues guitar. Great lesson. Love Open G. Have you ever tried putting that low E string tuned to D to work by tuning it to G? Of course Keith removes it entirely because it does get in the way. If you have a dedicated guitar for open G you can try using a low A string as the 6th string and tuning that to G (if you are concerned about too much tension). Adds some power to your power chords. Just an idea. Thanks again.

  • @johnrenshaw9688
    @johnrenshaw9688 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I really enjoyed your presentation. I noticed how you avoid playing the 6th.sting which is tuned down to D. When I played live covering typical Keith Richards open "G" classics, I tuned my Telecaster GGDGBD. To avoid damaging the neck increasing the tension on the normal gauge 6th. string from"E" to "G", I used two "A" 5th. stings tuning both to "G". Typical Keith Richards / Rolling Stones Classic riffs sound far better without the 6th. string tuned to "D", I think that is why Keith simply removed this 6th.string and played like you said with just 5 strings. Personally I found having two bass strings tuned to "G" unusual and very effective. Every time I changed a set of strings I always kept the used "A" 5th. I am retired now but still found new ides from your presentation. kind regards,John.

      @marijanmadunic3046, you are very welcome, glad you liked the video :)
      In answer to your question, whether you are playing the open strings in open G tuning, or a bar chord at the 3rd fret in standard tuning, both are G chords.
      Both contain the notes G, B, and D which make up a G chord. They are just in a different order.
      The 3rd fretted bar chord in standard tuning, is a G chord in root position with G as the lowest note.
      Strumming the open strings in open g tuning, gives you a G chord in 2nd inversion due to the D note being the lowest note in the chord.
      Hope that helps, but do let me know if I have misunderstood your question :)

    Is it g tuning if you have the high E string tuned to G. Vice versa low E?

    • @acousticguitarlessons
      @acousticguitarlessons  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Stephen, not really because you still have the open A string which is not part of a G chord. Tuning your high E to a G may break the string too as you are moving up a minor 3rd

    Hi I meant how do you play it in open G tuning?

    • @acousticguitarlessons
      @acousticguitarlessons  ปีที่แล้ว

      There would be many ways you could play it in an Open G Tuning :)
      If we are talking about an FMaj13 chord in the position you are playing it in Standard Tuning, only in Open G Tuning, then the F note 1st fret/6th string would have to move to the 3rd fret/6th string.
      You might mute out the open G string (5th string).
      Notes that fall on strings 4, 3, 2 would remain the same as these strings are unchanged in Open G Tuning, and the open E string would now be 2nd fret/1st string.
      That may not be the most playable shape of an FMaj13, there are likely more accessible voicings of it, but I don't have a guitar in my hands right now :)

    How do you play G7

    • @acousticguitarlessons
      @acousticguitarlessons  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are many ways, but the simplest would be to place a finger at the 3rd fret/1st string and then strum with this note along with the open 5th, 4th, 3rd, and 2nd strings.
      In otherwords, you are strumming form the 5th string up to the first string, with the only fretted note being played is the 3rd fret/1st string :)
