    This would have to have been one of the easiest-to-follow Guitar tutorials on TH-cam.

    I could honestly listen to slack key all day. Makes a guitar sing like no other. Reminds me of being in the islands, calms me down and makes me happy.

    My kumu back in '74 showed me the right thumb action and told me to do the thumb 20 minutes a day for 3 weeks. The 2nd lesson was the vamp (can play any kine as long as it fit), and the 3rd lesson was chords in Taropatch. "Play da right chord at da right time, keep da t'umb moving, and no fo'get da vamp, - people will t'ink you know how foa play."

    Love this video. I fell in love with slack key when I lived in hawaii in the 90s…ur technique is exquisite and love yalls vibe…it’s easy for Texans in hawaii…thru some mystical accident, we share the same sensibilities…likely the frontier and cowboy spirit…aloha, my friend

    Very informative video, thank you! Have been playing electric guitar for 2 years mainly playing metal and rock but have just now started listening to some hawaiian tunes so I wanted to see how to make my solos sound hawaiian and this definitely helps!

    Among many of TH-cam video choices on "slack key" I would recommend this as an essential beginning explanation. It takes more "smarts" to break things down to get to the essentials. TU

    Eh Makana, I know you played with Braddah Smitty. His brother Charles Kaliealoha Smith is still alive and living the n Jupiter Florida. He plays traditional Hawaiian mele. Come to Florida and I’ll introduce to him:
    Love your playing, saw you play on Maui years ago. You get’um brah.
    Aloha

    Very interesting that it was vaqueros who brought guitars to Hawaii. Hawaiian music strongly influenced country and western music, which romanticized the cowboy life... which was also something that came from the vaqueros. There was a point when many country and western bands would also be playing gigs as Hawaiian music bands. It was very popular in America in the early 20th century, I'm sure you know.

    If one is looking to learn slack-key (Kiho’alu) would you advise to start with steel or nylon strings?
    Would classical or blues genre transition any better to slack-key?

    Мой английский очень плохой и я половины не поняла, но было очень интересно😅 Хочу часовую запись таких упражнений, а то гитара уж запылилась 🤦‍♀️ Удачи вам в преподавании 🤗

  • @KevinToine

    Very interesting. But what makes slack key so different than other fingerpicking where they also alternate the bass? Just the specific tunings or something else I'm missing?

    • @jwm1893
      @jwm1893 ปีที่แล้ว

      Essential it's Hawaiian style music played in alternative tunings. That's my understanding any way
