      So true. When Dil Se released I was just discovering internet and remember going to the website and reading through it multiple times. So less is talked about Dil Se and Mani sir’s interpretation of seven shades of love - Hub, Uns, Ish, Aqueedat, Ibaadat, Junoon and ending with Maut. The journey still haunts!

    I'm a Geetanjali fan for life! It's one of the most beautiful movies about love and death.
    I've always wondered about those parallel storyline of the driver and some lady. I'm guessing for comic relief and a relief from the heaviness of the film. But it's so sleazy and feels like someone else shot it and inserted those clips in a Mani Ratnam film. I always fast forward those scenes.

    Mani has been very fortunate for being born in “Venus” family.
    He got the best music of Illayaraja because of his uncle Krishnamurty sir, which Mr Raja tributed with bestest music. (U can revisit)
    Third, he was lucky to find ARR and PC sriram who spoke loud through the camera and World class music.
    PC especially with the angles and lighting was exceptionally marvellous. Which was totally new to Indian cinema.( PC sir went into depression after his personal loss and that’s how Manoj and Santhosh came on board) but PC already had left a motorway for them. It was easy ride.
    Post Alaipaayuthe, his work was slowed down (due to health issues) . But I felt GuRu was a brilliant par casual.
    His recent Ponniyin selvan in terms of screenplay is a disaster.
    But he was lucky with the cinematograph, casting, music and production through out his career.
    I am not taking low about his talent, but he was just lucky.

      @srizviewz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Reading from what is being said here , it sounds like Mani needed breathing room and space to improve the song / sound which he got with arr , that too with quality. But with raja it was like here take all 5 songs by the afternoon. It works great for commercial Tamil movies but might have come across as it's more Raja's work than a combined team effort.

    • @AK-mf9ho
      @AK-mf9ho 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@srizviewzIt's simply your perception. Raja sir is always open to suggestions. Many directors have vouched for it. Moreover his albums are not just commercial hits. Right from Pallavi anupallavi to Thalapathy, all the soundtracks from this combo are eternal and evergreen. Both songs and BGMs. Ilaiyaraaja sir had worked on Nayagan score and Agni Natchathiram score in parallel. Morning session Nayagan and afternoon session Agni. One is a period flick and the other one is a modern flick. He pulled off both convincingly. You must watch another interview where Mani Ratnam says "The two most talented artists in the entire industry are Ilaiyaraaja sir and Jayamohan sir". That says it all.

    Mani Ratnam plus Ilayaraja is the best combo ever. Even his worst film (according to him 29:14), Idhaya Koil was a huge success because of the wonderful songs by Ilayaraja. The real story behind the introduction of ARR includes people like K.Balachander and Vairamuthu's personal egoistic vendetta with Ilayaraja. And initially, it was Ilayaraja was the one recommended him to different movie producers, foreseeing Mani Ratnam's potential.

    Some additional informations for the North Indians who are not fully aware of Mani's background
    1. Unlike what he says in this session, he's not a complete outsider. His Father, Uncle and his elder brother were all in film business. PC, Kamal, etc were his friends even before he ventured into movies
    2 The 4th movie that he disowns is Idhaya Kovil which was a super duper hit, widely known for its songs and comedy track. That was the first & last Mani's movie that had a seperate comedy track. I think those scenes might have been shot by the producer, nevertheless those scenes are still funny. He repeated the same leading actor of this movie into his 5th movie i.e. Mouna Raagam
    3. There's more to why Mani chose ARR which he hasn't fully divulged. It's a long story, but it's due to a tiff between Ilayaraj and the producer of Roja, who was also the director of the movie Ek Duuje Ke Liye. Mani and Raja combination produced evergreen songs that are still unmatched & unrivaled. Mani & ARR songs might have garnered more listeners in the North and so might have made more revenue. But, artistically, Mani & Raja songs were totally at a different level with incredible background scores too.
    4. Yes, Mani has a fascination for mythological stories. But, most of his films with mythological connection didn't end up doing well at the box office including Thalapathy...

I think the rest of the population could not identify the Ravan in Vikram.
      But yeah, he must be the only guy hwo thinks thalapathy is not a hit.

    IMHO Ilayaraja (Mastero) was very instrumental for the success of Maniratnam and gave him the life and he leaving Raja has done great injustice to purist music lovers. While ARR could have brought a new sound but had his association continued with Raja sir music would have thrived. Lot of people are realising this gross historical mistake happened..

    Mani Rathnam knows Ilayaraja is a genius because if you remove his songs Mani rathnam's movies are nothing. ARR can give nice tunes but falls short in Background score.

      Ilayaraja is a genius. No doubt. But, Rahman can't do background scores??
      I wouldn't agree.
      Mani Ratnam's last outing PS 1 & 2 has one of the best ever periodic film soundtracks that has ever happened in Indian film music.
      Rahman too does write and create orchestral scores if you aren't aware of.
      Some of his background scores are scattered around YT and digital streaming platforms for you to check. You might change your mind if you are open. 😊
