  • David Packouz from Singular Sound presents their BeatBuddy drum machine pedal. This compact and innovative drum machine is completely controllable with just a tap of your foot. It's loaded with 200 songs covering 21 different styles, including rock, country, jazz, blues, and more. Perfect for one-man bands, singer/songwriters, practices, and more, the BeatBuddy is easy to use and sounds great since it uses actual recordings and loops of real drummers.

    Personally, I've never been a fan of drum machines but I understand that its not practical to have live drums for most venues or gigs. This looks like a pretty good solution, simple and intelligent operation and not too big.

    I use the Beatbuddy Mini and it has the same problems as the Beatbuddy with regard to live performance. In a live situation it is important to change the drum genre and tempo quickly. This isn’t possible with these pedals unless you bend down and adjust them between songs. Another problem, when playing rhythm guitar as I do, is that double pressing to end is very awkward for many songs. I’ve modified my Beatbuddy Mini to insert another pedal, not in the pedal socket supplied, which emulates the button on the pedal. This means I have my pedal on a stand where I can adjust it standing upright and conversing with the audience but a can still operate the pedal with my foot. This still doesn’t address the double press to end though. I now have another socket to add another single pedal with some simple electronics that emulate a double tap of the pedal. It requires a battery and I have fitted a rechargeable battery. This has solved my problems. It would be really super if you could come up with something similar in both your pedals just for us live musicians. Thank you.

      I know it's not always optimal, but it sounds like you can solve those issues with a midi pedal. More gear to carry, but many more possibilities using MIDI along with the peddle. For recording, as well. And 24 bit drums! I'm pretty much sold on the Beat Buddy big boy. (Sorry, wifey, but you married a musician for better or for worse.)

    Thanks for the demo. I am glad I was sick and didn't pull the trigger on Black Friday for the Beat Buddy Mini. Your voice compression on the video was just a little annoying, but I was able to get by that and your demo of the devices answered all of my questions. THANK YOU. 🤬 Now I have to spend over twice what I was going to pay and buy the big brother version of the peddle. I would hate myself for going the cheaper route and I do look forward to producing some great music with it before I die. 😂

      Hi, Mark. You can run through the Beat Buddy like a normal guitar pedal and into an amp if you want. That being said, guitar amps weren't really designed with drum machines in mind, so the sound quality might be lacking. Most people who use these run them into a PA, drum amp, or keyboard amp. Just change the form factor to desktop for those of us (recording studios, etc) that don't want this thing on the floor. Switches become pads. No R&D, that's it, just change the package. You could go crazy and break out the MIDI to individual IN/OUT/THROUGH jacks.

      Seems like the best way to use it in a show, is to have it up on your note stand and use the extension pedal to stop and start (and pause). To set the accurate tempo, you then don't have to 'Ben Dover' for every song change, like a strawberry picker :)

    In the market for a beat machine. It's between the BeatBuddy and the Trio +. If you guys had a looper on this, I'd get two. It sounds great. I recently purchased a Zoom GX3 and it only has a 40 second loop time which is ridiculously short. Need more time to learn from my many mistakes. Hahaha. Good luck, David. Great tutorial as well.

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thanks for your interest! No, the BeatBuddy doesn’t have the ability to isolate specific parts of a recorded track. It’s really designed to be a practice and/or performance tool for guitarists needing a drum machine. I’m not aware of any pedal that has the functionality you’re describing, but AI algorithms in software are getting quite good at “unmixing” recorded music - you might check out iZotope Ozone for a great example of this:

    If you are thinking of live performance in semi-loud situations the additional footswitch is fine. However, be warned, the switches make an awful noise. I would not take them into the studio for recording. Their tech man checked out my video and said that the level of noise was 'normal' for them. You can hear the clunk of the switch as well as the squeak of the spring, all amplified by the enclosure.

    Whoever programmed my beat buddy
    Is an overplaying drummer who might be fired after the 10th gig if he didn’t chill
    Just when you think you find a usable beat they go and put a stutter somewhere that isn’t needed and chances are ruins the song
