    Completely agree with you re: bra making. I’m extremely particular with the types of bras I like and I can’t be bothered to make my own. I also love button up shirts - they are such a satisfying make. I have now made two coats. I wear one regularly, but never wore the other. 😢 I do want to get another one done at some point, but most likely next year. I do like making bags. I love that you can personalize a bag with the fabric you choose and I find that they are relaxing to make - no worrying about fit! 😊

    Bras are in my, "Are you out of your mind?" catagory.
    Hats, I love to make hats. I don't knit or crochet. Fabric hats are just fun to make. I have made everything from huge sunhats to flapper cloches. Right now i'm planning a fleece lined version of my favorite bucket hat for winter. One way to make your hats look more polished is to put plastic boning (washable) or milinary wire in the edge of the brim. That way the brim is not so floppy.

    I wear the same kind of bras you do - I need the padding to fill things out, LOL, and want skin-tone, plain bras to be smooth under t-shirts and sweaters, plus I can't imagine going to the trouble of trying to fit a bra - it's bad enough just trying to buy one sometimes, but at least all I have to do is try a bunch on instead of starting from scratch! Also as someone else commented, I would never make jeans and don't really make pants other than simple elastic-waist pajama pants b/c of difficulty fitting - I'm ok with trying on a lot of jeans instead of trying to make them myself. I agree with you that coats weren't quite as hard as I thought they would be, depending on the pattern and fabric, which was a nice surprise! I do love to make cloth napkins and placemats with a lot of different fabrics as that is all we use and it's a quick win for a new look on our table and I feel like I did something! I like a nice easy cardigan for another feel-good project - literally and figuratively 😀.

    I'm not a great fan of making hats but I have a small head, so buying one that fits is difficult. So a couple of years ago, I made a bucket hat that I really need as I am out in the sun a lot with my dog. I also made mittens for my husband. He suffers really badly from the cold so I have tried to make super thick insulated mittens of a sort that I have never seen for sale. I didn't really enjoy making them but they were a necessity and they are great in the winter. Again, making something because I couldn't find what I wanted to buy. I have made a few bags and I quite enjoyed doing it but most of all I like the fact I can get a bag in the fabric that I want and customise it to my own taste. Also it is cheap and I get something pretty at the end of it, which appeals!!!!

    • @knottygnome
      @knottygnome  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes, there are definitely things i've made out of necessity that i didn't really want to make, but it was totally worth it in the end!

    What I don't like to sew:
    Bras- I tried it in the 90s and while the bralettes were somewhat comfortable, they looked terrible! Easier to just buy back support bras for the flat chested.
    Sweatshirts and polar fleece: it's a easier to just buy them. I tried some polar fleece pullovers and didn't like them. Found someone who did.
    Knit tops: I only sew these when I want something very specific and I can't find it in stores. It's just blah for me.
    What I love to sew! I love having total control over the quality of my clothes. From better fabrics and construction.
    Blouses/shirts: I love these because the ones I make have long enough sleeves! I can create some a bit different too. On shirts, I sew small high waist darts and it gives me the illusion of having a figure. I'm a total rectangle.
    Skirts: I mostly sew pencil skirts from ponte knit fabric. That is for my own comfort.
    Period clothes: I mix period clothes with my contemporary wardrobe. Poet shirt with Victorian frock coat, skinny jeans and Doc Martens. A baggy sweater with 19teens skirts.
    These days I'm dying to have new clothes as most of my things are 7-11 years old. However they are in great shape after weekly wear and laundering. I only create new when something is worn out because I live on a very tight budget.

    I'm in the "like to sew" column for mittens. I knit and crochet, but years ago I felted a lot of thrifted sweaters and some had such lovely designs... or fibers - felted cashmere is truly dreamy. It was easy to make mittens out of the felted wools. Since I live in FL, though, it isn't something I need a large supply of! I love to make blouses and simple dresses. Again, my location has a lot to do with it. I can't think of a type of thing in particular that I hate making... but I for sure hate (and generally won't) making elaborate things that other people want and think I'll enjoy making for them because they like it.

    Great video, Sarah! I love sewing turtlenecks for the winter months (and have another one coming up soon!) Regarding bras, I’ve made quite a few for myself, and while they were OK to sew, they were very time-consuming as well. I probably will not make as many as I did before. However, when I do find myself needing a new one, because of my stash, it would be cheaper just to make one! I can’t believe the price of those things have gone up as much as they are (for so little fabric!). Now, my favorite thing to sew are tops. I just feel I can never have enough of them (or I wear them out to quickly!) Finally, one of the main things I do not like sewing are coats. I’ve made a few in my lifetime (even one for my husband) I just do not find them enjoyable to sew. (Time-consuming.). However, with that said, I do like making jackets! I have quite a few and a few coming up. Go figure? The only difference between jackets and coats are the length. 😂😂😂 so your guess is as good as mine on that one! Thanks for a great thought-provoking video! 👏🏽❤

    I was going to ask how easy it is for you find bras to fit… in my younger, skinnier, pre pregnancy years I was a nearly A cup and mourned the day playtex stopped making them. I still hate shopping for bras as it’s still difficult to find comfortable ones. I also love making turtleneck tops, I’m also in western NY and wear them a lot this time of year. Like you said, they can be made up in about an hour or so. I like the Hepburn turtleneck by itch to Stich as it fits me well. I am interested in venturing into coats, I just purchased the Andes Jacket also by itch to stitch…and the same color soft shell fabric they picture on their site…looking forward to tackling it. Thank you for the inspiration.

    • @knottygnome
      @knottygnome  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      it wasn't easy at all. i was lucky to find lulalu (linked in description box) and i'm terrified that they will go out of business because these startups never seem to last. when i last placed an order i bought like 5 bras at once b/c i was worried that they wouldn't be around when i went to order again.

  • @jankerslake5813
    @jankerslake5813 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I totally agree about bras and also jeans. I’ve found jeans I love and that fit me perfectly. I don’t need the hassle of battling thick fabric. I’m thinking of sewing pants/knickers just as a means of using up some soft jersey scraps, otherwise I wouldn’t bother.
    I like sewing dresses as I can choose shapes, fitting and patterns that I really like, adding even something as simple as a v neck which often rtw dresses don’t have. I do enjoy making bags - I find it quite relaxing and I can do free motion stitching drawing/adding designs …. and it never has to fit! We’re all different I guess and isn’t that wonderful? 😄

    Hi Sarah, I'm with you on the bra making. Too much work for such a small garment. I remember the winters in central NY and I don't miss them. Currently reside in Southern CA. You mentioned you like sewing turtle necks. I'm on the search for fabric now to make a few for myself. I enjoy making tops and pajamas. Sewing pants is a challenge, I always have to alter the rise and length. Love your videos. ☃

    I am totally with you on bra making! I do need to wear a supportive bra, but I find I can buy well fitting, comfortable and supportive bras easily. People who make bras also seem to make so many toiles and I haven't the patience for that, let alone deal with the teeny seam allowances and multiple pieces needed to make one my size. I have however, made myself one mock neck tee this year (Helen's Closet Dawson) and I love it! I have another cut out and several more planned.

    I love to sew t-shirts (because they are so easy and I can adapt them to my pear shape and mature body and use nice colors). I also make lots and lots of panties and leggings because I never can find anything ready made that fits me well (in addition to plus size pear I am also taller then average). Again, they are so easy and fast to make besides after making a t-shirt there is always leftovers that are just enough for pair of panties. Bra making? No, thanks. I also wear boring nude colors and have been lucky enough to find producer that makes size that really fits me so I order directly from their factory website and do not bother with making myself.

    Good morning all! Chiming in with a different take on the bra situation ;). Since I retired I wear only sports bras, and I got intrigued with the idea of making my own. Have been “perfecting” (um, not yet) the techniques for a while now. I’m really large busted, so I need a heavy fabric to provide the necessary support, which is a challenge with my machine (not a serger, perhaps that’s the problem). After lots of trial and error (mostly error) I’ve got some acceptable samples that I actually wear all the time. If anyone has any ideas on the server vs non-server issue I’d be thrilled to hear your input. Thanks for your channel and all the great info!

    • @knottygnome

      i consider sports bras to be their own thing separate from bras because the construction of them is so different. i've made several for myself and unlike regular bras they've been quick and easy. can't speak on the serger issue b/c i have one myself.

    PRO: I particularly enjoy sewing summer tops made of cool crisp fabrics like cotton or rayon. Quilting stores have a gorgeous array of cottons but quilting shops plus JoAnn's are the only fabric stores available where I live. CON: I do not want to sew JEANS because I'm a standard fit & would rather just buy JEANS than fight with sewing thick, bulky, denim seams. CON I love the sweet look of handmade toys but worry about the facial expressions. If you get the face wrong you can have a sourpuss toy that looks like a sad stroke victim.
