The more you have, the more you have to manage. I was without my machine for a month and it felt weird but I survived. I wouldn't want to have more stuff to take care of.
for me it's nice that i do have other hobbies i can turn to without my machine. and the house is probably a little cleaner as well. 🤣
This is one of my favourite videos you’ve done. I liked your honesty, sometimes it just seems people want more more more and haven’t got any patience. I was also interested to hear your thoughts on the cover stitch machine. I sew quite a lot of knits so often think about getting one - but I think they are too big and pricey for the small improvement they would make in my sewing. I know some people love them! Finally your makes this month are all lovely. I really think you know what suits you ♥️
thanks for the kind words. i think whether or not a coverstitch is worth it is so personal, which makes it so hard to figure out if it's worth it "for you" in advance. it's only with hindsight that i now realize that i probably didn't need one. it seemed like a great idea at the time.

thank you! they are only slightly too long, so they don't really bother me. i do get comments sometimes from people who like to point out when my shoulders don't fit so i didn't want to make it seem like they were perfect.
I absolutely agree, your Kitty dress is a total knockout. The print is so fun, and it looks great on you. I'm also really appreciating all of your refashions. So inspirational! I loved your Myosotis dress before, but I also love the new version that's going to actually get some wear.

I love slow careful sewing. No rushing and being careful with each step. It just results in much nicer things that look great, hold up really well and I enjoy wearing much more than something that is rushed.

I know I'm lucky but when my machine went to the sewing machine clinic (real name) I borrowed my sister in law's sewing machine. And I did end up using it but also found it comforting to have a machine in my space.
if you are lucky enough to have a machine to borrow, that seems like the perfect solution!
I love the cherry dress so much and the fit looks perfect! The vest is the perfect layering piece without being too hot. So happy to see them back and it brings back memories of the ones I sewed for myself and my sisters years ago. Pattern Scout has a very nice vest pattern. Check it out if you haven't already seen it. I embraced minimalist sewing with only one machine. Nice to hear you have a good repair location for your machine. Loved the refashion on the bell sleeved dress. The short sleeves are more flattering on your petite frame. The kitty dress turned out really cute-great idea to line/interline it. And, that vest is a nice addition to your wardrobe-quite versatile.

You are a gem! I totally understand why you don’t want a second machine. I upgraded and kept my old machine. I use my old machine as back up and it’s small enough that I take it when I go to classes. I love your sewing journey, I love your styling. Thank you for this video.enjoy.
thank you! having a smaller machine for travel sounds like a good idea. mine weighs almost 30 pounds and i definitely would not want to lug it around places.
I totally get why you wouldn’t want a 2nd machine, I happen to be one of those multi-machine people you mentioned, but I’ve had them for years. My spare machine is in a rolling bag in my closet, so no need for extra space. I have the 2 sewing machines, 2 sergers, a coverstitch and an embroidery machine. Yes, lots of machines. My issue is upgrading and not getting rid of the old machines. Thankfully, I’ll soon be paying my older serger forward. I admire your commitment though, HAPPY SEWING!!! 😀😀😀

Thanks for making this video. It's nice to hear from others about their sewing as I'm the only one that sews clothes in my area. Quilts are nice but not my thing. If I make one it's out of sewing scraps and good parts of worn clothes.
I have a second machine but that is because I bought a Singer Heavy Duty with over 175+ decorative stitches. I plan on giving the old Bernette to my daughter. Have had the serger for 31 years and it is a real workhorse.
The Singer works like the pre mid 80s machine as it just sews and my pins never get caught. I've since learned that buying a beefier motor and swapping it out is also doable and makes the machine sew easily.
I would love to buy a Reliable Barracuda semi industrial machine for heavy fabrics. The Singer was a compromise but I love using it compared to the Bernette. I do sew enough things to justify buying the Reliable. I can do cover stitch on my serger, I just don't bother and finish it with double needle.
If I get the shoulders fitted, I usually don't bother with the waist dart as I have a rectangular figure. Because of being large boned it was thought I was a bit fat. Nope just nature and I got out of torturing myself with diets and so on.
I like how you lined the dress. I would have done it the same way. You'll find that it will take longer to wear out. I line most things even when not indicated. I'm a bit older than you are and used to carefully look at my mother's clothes from the 50s and 60s. Lined, bras strap holders and high end construction. When the 70s came about it is like she went colorblind and lost any aesthetic sense and hasn't recovered. The 70s was a painful childhood.
Sometimes you need to alter or refashion clothes. When I do this, it feels like I have a new outfit. Reminds me.. my mending pile is accumulating dust.

@@knottygnome It is and something I been thinking about for years. I first thought of the SailRite around 10 years ago. Then I found the Barracuda and Reliable is a well known Canadian brand. That it has everything that SailRite has for 60% less is a big boon. I don't sew much for myself these days as I have plenty of nice clothes in good shape. However I do sew for my grandson and youngest daughter quite a bit. At $759, it's within reach. My sons told me if I save up a third of the cost, they would pay for the rest.
Sewing Goth bondage pants on an anemic home machine is painful. It can be done with good results but its painful. I also like to sew wool coats and that on my anemic Bernina is painful too. The Singer Heavy Duty does better but despite all the hype, it's not made to sew lots of heavy fabric without a hitch. I spent my life alternating between medical, IT and hospitality. Now I'm working on walking again and thinking to expand my sewing for more income and get back on my feet after years of major illnesses.
Everyone says we need an overlocker as well. I hate them, messing with rethreading it all the time, ugh! You do you! Nuff said😊
i used to feel the same until i bought a serger with airthreading. it's a breeze to rethread now. worth every penny.

I'm in total agreement about the number of sewing machines. I've had 2 machines that I love but here's the thing. One is a straight stitch quilter with a large throat. The second is my basic old Pfaff. I did have a serger that I gave away years ago. I make knits using the basic zig zag stitch. I make most garments with french seams or false flat felled seams. No need for a serger for me. I've made several knitted garments, coats, dresses, blouses, trousers and tailored shirts. And 2 machines is perfect for all of the top stitching I do. I've just chosen my machines for how I sew. So I agree, pick your machines for your projects. More is not necessary or better.
it's wonderful to have so many options so that everyone can personalize what works best for them. i would never give up my serger but to each their own!

My sewing machines take 6-8 weeks to get worked on. You are lucky yours takes only 2 weeks.

it definitely did not take 2 weeks. it ended up being about a month and a week. but hey, i got it back eventually.

everyone is different so maybe you would find a coverstitch worth it. i think if you sew a lot of knits, it could be.
Thank you! Love your cherry dress, and thank god someone else takes 2 weeks to make a dress! Same. I enjoy the process of a slow sew. I’m still using my $99 very basic sewing machine, which I’ve had for quite a few years now. At the time I said to myself I’ll upgrade it when I need to… still haven’t needed to😊. I sew everything from knits to linen to denim with it. I did get an overlocker though, and although I won’t discount my desire for a cover stitch machine one day… a twin needle creates the same finish on hemming stretch fabrics - and does the same job for now.
i think that when/if you do choose to upgrade you'll have a much more clearly defined idea of what you are looking for. i think that helps a lot.
The floral shirt you are wearing under the vest- that fabric is so pretty! Nice job on all. And yes, you are at a different point in life that I am. So I totally understand your sewing machine stance. I'm retiring in 9 months and have a sewing room. You have to do what works for you. And the magenta jacket you are wearing in the intro is a great color for you. I can't wait to see what you make next.

Really like the Sew Over Kitty dress; the fabric is lovely! I appreciate your perspective on a second machine. I am close to retirement and literally will probably give away two of my machines. Having 5 machines and a serger is a burden and doesn’t align with my sewing needs at all. It’s taken me too many years to understand more stuff doesn’t necessarily mean more joy😏 Thanks for sharing!

It is smart to consider space. I used to teach classes and I have an extra machine that I want to rehome and I think my niece is going to take it. I also decided that I am not going to hang on to the backup serger because I have a shop that services babylock close by and I can do without for the short time it would be in for service. Even with having a big sewing space, I value open space.

I totally understand why a second machine would not work for you right now. I have multiple machines, but I have room for them and they each have their own “job” LOL One is for garments, one is for quilting and one is for embroidery. I just want the freedom of going from hobby to hobby when the mood strikes me without needing to change up needles, threads, settings, etc each time. I love your makes for this month and bravo for finally getting those small alterations done!!
it does sound very nice! i think the first edit i would make to my sewing room if i had unlimited space would be to get a big cutting table rather than another machine.

Those alterations! Yes. It reminded of why I stay away from puffy or complicated sleeves 😂 I am always cold so being able to layer is key.
Also the jacket, yes, if it doesn't feel right it's worth putting the effort into changing it.
My last few makes have taken me longer because I have been making muslins to get the fit just right. If it's a new pattern, it is hard for me to get a good idea of whether it will suit me, what length I want, is it comfortable, etc. But when I get to the actual project, I can take my time with finishes knowing I am not likely to need alterations.
it's unfortunate because i do think that full sleeves are very pretty. so annoying though.

Nice makes for this month! It always feels so good to mend or alter an old garment so that you can wear it. I do have a suggestion for darts because I’m also usually a larger size at the waist than the bust. You can just make the darts smaller in the size for your bust to give yourself extra room in the waist.

I like that you give us food for thought around machines, I felt for awhile that i NEEDED a coverstitch, but the price was so high here that I waited, and waited and in the end, got over that need feeling. My hubby bought his own machine at one point, with embroidery software, and since it cost so much, I tend to feel guilty if I don't find something to embroider every year. We need some inputs like yours for caution!
And your experience with the myasotis resonates with me as well. I tend to tweek and tweek an item until I find the variation that makes me love it and actually wear it. Right now I am considering trying to buy more fabric to turn an elbow length top into full sleeve, because it bugs me.
since i've started focusing on doing more alterations, i've realized how small nitpicky things can prevent me from wearing a garment. made me reflect on how many things i've rehomed over the years that probably just needed a minor change to make them wearable.
You could get a serger that’s also a cover stitch machine, which they make now. 😊
thanks! when i was researching coverstitch options i decided against the combo machine because i heard it was cumbersome to switch back and forth. it would've been better for fitting into the space i have but it was also much more costly since i already owned a serger.
Yes, it’s such a waste to have machines you don’t use. I never use my cover stitch, although I use my backup machine all the time. I bought it when my main machine was out of town and I hated its absence. It’s such a luxury though. (Note to self: sell the coverstitch.)
i should give myself a timeframe and if i don't use my coverstitch in that time, then i have to sell it.

I love your realistic approach. Same for me. I've been tempted to buy a new machine, mainly for buttonholes, but can't justify the space and the expense for the amount of sewing I do.
And I am also like you at the point where I have sewn or altered my clothes to the point where I don't really *need* anything.
Hi Sara, I appreciated hearing your thoughts on not having a backup machine. When I bought a new machine in 2021, I kept my 25 y/o one that I'd used all those years, to now use as a backup. Plus, I'm kind of attached to it, lol. It was my first machine that I bought myself. Truth be told, I like having it around but I really haven't needed a backup very often. I may use it soon for a couple weeks while the newer one goes in for servicing. Knowing all this now, if I had only one machine in my possession, a good reliable model, I likely wouldn't feel the need to purchase a 2nd just to have a backup. Great video. Very enjoyable video - from your thoughts on what works for you in the sewing room/machine "herd" to the very lovely projects you completed. You had a very successful month! I've only been watching your channel a couple of months now but I enjoy it very much and look forward to your new videos. I have more than one sewing machine (some are "vintage" and mostly just sentimental or to look at as "décor" on the shelf in my sewing room although they all work just fine) as well as a serger and CS machine. But I also have the space to have the three main machines set up 24/7. It really is a personal choice and balance of what works for you. Buying something just because someone else says you should isn't always the best answer. (As you obviously know!)

i thought about doing some serger-only projects but i have knits coming out the wazoo so not really a necessity for me at the moment. it's a great idea though. i'm sorry that the video is long. it's hard to balance sharing all of the details while keeping things as brief as possible.
