    I'm trying to grasp how metals can shrink with heat.
    Doesn't heat expand metals?

      Good question! Yes it does expand when heated, but it shrinks when it cools from the wet rag. When I heated that spot it swelled up and created an expanded lump where the steel turned orange from the heat, so I have to hammer that back down and then when I cool it with the wet rag all that metal shrinks and tightens up. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching!

      Oh! Now I understand.
      Thanks for the explanation.
      Good job on getting rid of that oil can too.

    Great video 👍 Using a oxy torch is not always available so a arc welder spot and apply a lump of metal ontop of weld spot then push down onto a cold metal lump or table 😊

    That's amazing. Did not know that it was even possible to heat shrink Metal.
    And to cool the metal down, did you use just plain water 💧?
    I enjoy your videos very much.
    I just watched the video you done on the replacement patch on the bottom of the door for the 3rd time.

      Yes I just used plain tap water to cool it down and relax the steel. Haha and I'm glad you like my videos man that means a lot!

    Do you think a propane torch can do the same as the oxy acetylene for heating? Would need a more concentrated tip, thanks for taking the time to put out the video!👍🇨🇦

      @BeAMetalFabricator  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have tried that propane and it takes so long to get a concentrated heat spot it ends up heating a larger part of the panel. I wouldn't recommend.. maybe map gas but oxy acetylene is best with a small or medium size Victor torch. 👍 Thanks for watching

    Are you shrinking stretched metal or stretching shrunk metal? I’m trying to understand the sequence of heat, dolly and cooling. What does each do?

    • @BeAMetalFabricator
      @BeAMetalFabricator  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah so with the heat from the torch I'm shrinking the metal, where it turns red hot the metal forms a little bump so I hammer and dolly the bump back down just to planish it, then I cool it right after with the rag which is actually what shrinks the steel and also stops the heat from spreading too far on the panel and excessively warping, and relaxes the metal back to where it needs to be. Notice while it's cooling down the oil can is still there but after it's cooled the metal tightens up

    could you use a shrinking disc for this situation ?

    • @BeAMetalFabricator
      @BeAMetalFabricator  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a good question, A shrinking disk might have worked for this, although usually shrinking disks are idea to knock down really small highs, in this case the metal might have clunked down with the pressure of the disk but it might have worked.
