It's not a new observation, but Steve Gadd's drumming is just next level brilliant - and we hear virtually no snare drum! One of Paul Simon's most undervalued songs, and about as much fun as he ever got. The syncopated rhythm is just so infectious.
Classic Paul Simon a great request many more to come. Its the great Steve Gadd on drums, Tony Levin on bass, Eric Gale on electric guitar, Hugh McCraken on acoustic guitar and horns arranged by the great Dave Grusin. Great DAN selection Stephen and a gyrating/grooving reaction from N & L. Solid Gold.
when i was a kid. while riding out a hurricane in texas, this song played all night long on a loop on the radio i must have heard it 50 times that night lol my favorite Simon song
I saw Simon & Garfunkel in Stockholm 1982, they played this - Steve Gadd had two drumsticks in each hand to get that special sound. Amazing, What a day that was.
Yeah Steve Gadd, he is great, his drum work on this funny, so lovely song of Paul Simon, I loved it, at is so full of joy and happiness. BTW, I watched Steve Gadd live 2 times, 1 was in 1979 in Mannheim in Germany as drummer of the late Chick Corea. He was also with Steely Dan and Eric Clapton and many more. Paul Simon was the master of all songs of Simon and Garfunkel and I loved all his solo albums too !!
Graceland is my favorite Paul Simon album. Great from start to finish. This is my favorite from this album. Love the storytelling style he has This was a great request. Love that carnivale feeling. Great reaction. Looks like you had a good time.👍
Late In The Evening is one of my absolutely favourite songs. 😊😊 One of the best versions to me I think is the live performance that Paul made in Central Park in 1991 with his band of musicians from all over the world.
You are so right saying Paul is world music both with the "Graceland" album which had mostly African musicians on it and the "Rhythm Of The Saints" album which had South American Musicians. His music is timeless and simply wonderful to listen to ty for your reaction. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘🎶🎶🎶🎶🎵🎵🎵🎵
This has always been one of my favourite Paul Simon songs. He has to be one of the GREAT songwriters. Just listen to 'The Only Living Boy in New York' from S&G's Bridge Over Troubled Water album. Simply beautiful.
PS is a legend. DYK that Steve Gadd, who played with The Dan on many records, played the iconic drum, I'll call it a shuffle, on the song 'Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover'. Its brilliant. ALWAYS enjoy your reactions...
Great song, perceptive reaction. "Very playful, but very well put together" - so true! That's funny, it does remind one of All night long. But Paul's lyrics are always a few steps above almost anyone else. This song is so personal with those memory flashes pulling together his feelings about his own origins as a musician and his romantic feelings about meeting this special woman.
This was always one of my favorite Paul Simon tracks. And there’s a lot of them got to see him and Art Garfunkel perform at the Pontiac Silverdome during their reunion tour in the early 80s. This song seem to make everyone in the place that had a J with them, blaze up.
This was 3 or 4 years before Lionel's "All Night Long". And Simon & Garfunkel were both from New York City. Check out their early albums - lots of songs about the city. Simon did go to England for a while during a breakup period, when they hadn't really made it yet, but tried to be a success over there. Came home to the US and the rest is history.
Lionel Richie was 3-4 years later btw. Paul Simon was born in New York City. He played in England in the early 1960’s and wrote a lot of his early Simon and Garfunkel tunes there. He and Carrie Fisher weren’t married long.
For an album (beyond Graceland) to check out, try "Still Crazy After All These Years"... terrific '70s record with several radio played songs, and not a weak track.
My favorite Paul Simon song. Never seen anyone react this until a couple days ago and now another one! Weird. Go down the rabbit hole. If this song doesn’t make you move, there’s something wrong with you. If you like Lionel Richie, you need to check out his duet with Rob Zombie of The Commodore’s song Brick House. Living in Phoenix and being exposed to a lot of Mexican music, it always surprised me how prominent the tuba is.
Thanks, Stephen! An unusually fun song from Paul Simon. To answer your question, Nick, yes he was married to Carrie Fisher around this time. Then it all came suddenly crashing down. His next album, Hearts and Bones, was a very sad album in comparison, and sold poorly. But here he was much happier.
Hearts and Bones is a beautiful song though. Carrie Fisher once said: "If you can, you should get Paul Simon to write a song about you, he's very good at it".
7 Psalms is amazing for 2 reasons- it invokes memories of my Roman Catholic childhood and Gregorian chants almost and I like Edie Brickell his wife - also it is almost like 1 song with different pieces to it- it is not commercial at all but I can't believe he can still sing and play at 81 or 82..
While S&G were not "from" England, Paul Simon lived there for a time before they hit it big, and there are references to it in some of his early lyrics.
I love you guy's reactions but a lot of them are too long for my A.D.D. mind so I don't click on them. This one was doable for me and I loved it. Thanks. It is also one of my top 20 Paul Simon/Simon and Garfunkel songs.😀
Stephen Caruso at work- thanks for the reaction ! loved the dancing in the chair and also the usual great reaction! I grew up with Sounds of Silence as a 5 yr old in 1963 and Paul is a family favorite for many many decades- I knew you guys like my Basia and Chuck Mangione and other artists so I figured it was in your tastes with this song
I saw Paul Simon on the Graceland tour. He performed this song with a South African style. It was amazing. Unfortunately, I have never seen or heard a recording of this version.
One of you Dan Club members needs to request Paul's greatest (love) song, *René And Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After The War* - th-cam.com/video/nQ7sL9rdl58/w-d-xo.html
Greetings and Love from Köln/Cologne, Germany again. Great reaction like always..Of course I noticed the two signs with “München” printed on them. May I ask what connection you have with Munich/Bavaria? Would interest me... Thanks, have a peaceful day and stay safe ✌
Just for your information Late in the evening is from 1980 and all night long is from 1983. Btw I love Vallarta. Been there many times with my wife and I wonder if the restaurant you re referring to would be La Fuente del puente? Loved that place for the food and the music.

Sometimes when you two are together I’ll zoom in as much as possible to get close ups on your faces to watch your expressions. Well, maybe not so much on Nick…
It's not a new observation, but Steve Gadd's drumming is just next level brilliant - and we hear virtually no snare drum! One of Paul Simon's most undervalued songs, and about as much fun as he ever got. The syncopated rhythm is just so infectious.
HE is playing that rhythm with double drum sticks, 2 in each hand. There is a youtube video where he explains it.
The fact that he came up with it on his first take just is staggering to me - he's also the guy that did 50 Ways. Gadd is God.
Solid Gold.
I had forgotten Tony Levin was on this. Thanks.
thank you Scott!
I find it impossible to sit still when this song plays, it's such an infectious groove..
💃
when i was a kid. while riding out a hurricane in texas, this song played all night long on a loop on the radio i must have heard it 50 times that night lol my favorite Simon song
My favorite Paul Simon song. Love his story telling in it.
Me too, watched him play it live.
I saw Simon & Garfunkel in Stockholm 1982, they played this - Steve Gadd had two drumsticks in each hand to get that special sound. Amazing, What a day that was.
This has the amazing Steve Gadd on drums. he can play any style of music and make it sound like he's been playing it his whole life. Fantastic.
Yeah Steve Gadd, he is great, his drum work on this funny, so lovely song of Paul Simon, I loved it, at is so full of joy and happiness. Steve Gadd on drums- love it!
It's the other way around... Lionel Ritchie's "All Night Long" (1983) sounds like "Late In the Evening" (1980). 🙂
Exactly. Those of us who were mature and attentive when the music arrived remember this chronology.
Just delightful.
You can hear early, early preludes to Paul Simon’s love of world rhythms in Cecelia and the Boxer with his experimentation on Sounds of Silence album.
I saw thousands of people conga dance to this song in concert. Such a great song.
This might be my favourite Paul Simon song. Its fantastic!
Graceland is my favorite Paul Simon album. Great from start to finish. This is my favorite from this album. Love the storytelling style he has This was a great request. Love that carnivale feeling. Great reaction. Looks like you had a good time.👍

I do think this is my very favorite Paul Simon song. I have to dance along every time!
It's all about the groove... Tony and Stevie made the Still Crazy and One Trick albums so freakin' cool!
Great song, nice reaction. Another fun Paul Simon song is Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard. Also a bit of a Latin feel.
Master songsmith...Paul just "has it"...I loved his stuff before you guys were born..:)...
You are so right saying Paul is world music both with the "Graceland" album which had mostly African musicians on it and the "Rhythm Of The Saints" album which had South American Musicians. His music is timeless and simply wonderful to listen to
ty for your reaction.

Paul Simon has a deep and varied catalog in his solo career. You have much to discover.

Simon continued to play this tune live thru his last tour. Crowd always went wild.
Right now it's early in the morning but I sure love me some "Late in the evening"!!! Excellent choice which I haven't heard in a while so THANKS!!
This was 3 or 4 years before Lionel's "All Night Long". And Simon & Garfunkel were both from New York City. Check out their early albums - lots of songs about the city. You guys would love his tune “Allergies” which features a ripping solo from Al DiMeola.
Great song.
For an album (beyond Graceland) to check out, try "Still Crazy After All These Years"... terrific '70s record with several radio played songs, and not a weak track.
Absolutely, and I think his debut solo album is equally good.
I saw him in Drammen ( Norway) with this band in oktober 1980, great.
Paul got into African and Caribbean and Latin beats and note progressions around this time, thus the less folk sound to this tune.
One Trick Pony was also a movie. (Possibly his only one.)
My favorite Paul Simon song, and that's saying a lot!
My favorite Paul Simon song. Never seen anyone react this until a couple days ago and now another one! Weird. Go down the rabbit hole. This whole album is gold. I would suggest checking out the title track, or God Bless the Absentee.
I was one of the few who bought it ! I was 15 years old!

@@stephencaruso760 Thank you, I’ll check it out!
The hole album is a masterpiece❤
While S&G were not "from" England, Paul Simon lived there for a time before they hit it big, and there are references to it in some of his early lyrics.
The Boxer was written in England, he mentions his girlfriend of the time in many times.
Hearts and Bones is the Carrie Fisher love song/album.
Now you've gotta check out One Trick Pony. After you get more into Paul Simon you've gotta watch the movie One Trick Pony. Peace
Steve gadd, monster on drums.
Well that was fun! Thank you for all of your hard work. Luvuguys
Saw PS in the late 80s. Chevy Chase came out for You Can Call Me Al
6:52 - wow, Nick. I always thought a Jake was just a cigarette…. 😮😮😮 💨 💨 💨🤪🙃😶🌫️
It’s a jay, not a jake. 🙂
I knew you’d love it as much as you liked that Lionel Richie song - is this considered like a chacha beat?
Well, that was a blast!
I love you guy's reactions but a lot of them are too long for my A.D.D. mind so I don't click on them. This one was doable for me and I loved it. Thanks. It is also one of my top 20 Paul Simon/Simon and Garfunkel songs.😀
5:48 Because S&G spent '64-'65 in England. Simon developed a British accent that he said embarrassed him.
Stephen Caruso at work- thanks for the reaction ! loved the dancing in the chair and also the usual great reaction! Stephen, have you heard Paul’s latest album Seven Psalms? I’ve been avoiding it, since reviews have been mixed, but I trust your opinion.
I saw Paul Simon on the Graceland tour. He performed this song with a South African style. It was amazing. Unfortunately, I have never seen or heard a recording of this version.
Give a listen to "That was your Mother" from the Graceland album. Hear Paul do some Zydeco
Robert Fripp from King Krimson on bass
Tony Levin from KC, you mean?
Robert Fripp, a name that makes all reactors shudder.
When will there be a reaction to two of the greatest of European music? Franco Battiato and Jean Michel Jarre. A hug.
One of you Dan Club members needs to request Paul's greatest (love) song, *René And Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After The War* - th-cam.com/video/nQ7sL9rdl58/w-d-xo.html
He is a good one. Talented musical genius.
Steve Gadd officially rated about 4th or 5th best drummer of all time.
Greetings and Love from Köln/Cologne, Germany again. Great reaction like always..Of course I noticed the two signs with “München” printed on them. May I ask what connection you have with Munich/Bavaria? Would interest me...

(Sheldon) Hank Williams 3 son to ( Randall) Bocephus sounds and looks just like his Grandpa (Hiram )Hank Williams Sr.
👍👍👍👍👍
Cliff Richard started same time as elvis presley 5 years before beatles in the UK. He is still making music today. Try devil women sometime.
Check out "Se a Vida" by The Pet Shop Boys. That song has the same festive, Latin style as this one.
Steve Gadd playing drums at the "God" level.
Suggest you listen to Pauls "the afterlife" came out around 2010 or 2011.
Tony Levin on bass.

One of his best songs without the SJW vibes...🤷♀️🔥🎶🎶🎵🎶🔥✌️💯
If you're a guitarist look at some Paul Simon sheet music. MY fingers don't do that.
