AAA gaming, like Hollywood, isn't "out of ideas" fun ideas are a dime a dozen. They are outbof courage and willingness to take risks. When production costs become as high as they are and shareholders are breathing down your neck, taking a risk on something that might not pan out is very dangerous, so they will inevitably fall back on "safe" bets until those safe bets stop being safe (ie people get so fucking sick of them that they stop paying for the games).
I think you summed it up well. Many of the developers in the industry still have amazing game ideas, but tend to get ignored becouse of the gaming industrys recent need to 'Maximize profit with some formula that is guaranteed to bring sales'. - There is a big lack of risk taking and overall initiative in modern gaming.
For me personally, all I want now is for companies to make new games rather than repack old games because I've gotten tired of remakes recently, when silent hill 2 got a remake announced I just didn't care about it at all.
I think it's good that we see remasters and remakes because gaming is such a unique format of media, and its hardware becoming obsolete means that the accessibility of its history becomes so much harder to maintain. Remasters are a sort of sweet spot because in the larger scheme they take the least amount of work when bringing older games to new audiences. For most games, if the source code and assets are still there, it's just taking the existing work and fitting it for modern consoles, preserving that base experience. Remakes have their own benefit because developers can expand on ideas that they didn't have the capacity to on previous hardware, they can sand off the rougher edges of the experience, and basically present the ideal way to enjoy the game in a modern setting. But often that can come at losing the je ne sais quoi of the original game, be it in message or tone or writing, so it's a tough line to navigate in satisfying both old and new fans. Also, the development of remakes is much more intensive, so it pulls away from developing new games or IPs in service of trying to recapture these older titles. But ultimately I think these things are good, especially when we see games that otherwise weren't accessible worldwide like Live-A-Live or the Romancing Saga games. What's interesting about this discussion is that in recent years we've seen pushes for new IPs and new ideas to take hold but so many of them fall below expectations because they don't want to put in the work to advertise them to a wider audience. Square Enix released a huge wave of AA games over the past couple of years, and many of them were really interesting, like Paranormasight, The Diofield Chronicle, and The Centennial Case. But they all failed to sell enough copies because there was no push behind the releases. Paranormasight was probably the most successful of these, but that was all done through word-of-mouth. And SE aren't the only devs who have done this. Level-5 released Megaton Musashi W this year with not even an announcement of the game anywhere. Capcom just released Kunitsu-Gami and failed to advertise the game in a way that let people know what they'd be getting into, making it harder for people to buy into it. Advertising is so much easier when you can go "this is the game you already like" or "here's an earlier entry in a franchise you're familiar with" because it already comes with expectations. And because development costs have gotten so high in recent years, even mid-budget games get harder to justify if they can't drum up hype and recoup losses. It's a shame that these games and potential franchises get left to die from their publishers because they can't get people excited for these new releases.
if you’re new to playing games, pls check out the new Dead Rising remaster when it comes out in a few months! seriously one of the best games ever made imo and now it’s going to be even better! 😊
For me, the game I would love to see remastered, remade or ported would be Bugs Bunny Lost In Time on the ps1. I adore that game and I spent so much time with it ❤ I'm enjoying all the remakes right now as a number of them passed me buy or weren't avaliable in the UK at the time. Also quite a few of the original games are far too expensive to buy now. Great video! 😊
Wind waker and twilight princess. I know they arent even that old, but as someone who had a "family wii" and never upgraded to wii u it would just be nice for them to port those over to switch or something And I actually have a gamecube - but the games cost more than what i bought the system plus controllers and memory cards 4x over
Remakes/remasters/ports aren't a bad thing on their own, but I think the industry is using these as a crutch instead of bringing back obscure and unique games that never fully took off. We are getting less new IP's and the new IP's we do get are more of the same with similar gameplay and vibes. Concord being one of them. When the industry is remaking games like Until Dawn and The Last of Us Part 2, last gen exclusive that still hold up, I think there is an issue. My other issue with a lot of the remakes/remasters is that they change the graphics, but they don't update the gameplay around it, so it looks even more goofy. I think it is one reason I can appreciate the FF7 Remake series as it is a complete overhaul both graphically and gameplay wise. I feel like the remakes/remasters are publishers throwing people who like more classic single player games a bone saying, you guys can have the half assed scraps.
As long as we continue to get new ideas mixed in, I'm okay with the flood of remasters/remakes. There's so many games I would love to replay with polished up graphics and quality of life changes, as well as games that I never got to play in the first place that could be made more accessible with a remaster. My dream remake would definitely be the Xenosaga series!! I would love for that story to be brought to a new audience, while fixing some missteps made along the way
I have been saying this for years. Essentially since I skipped several gens, these are new games to me, however there does seem to be a focus on these remakes in a risk-averse games industry. Great video as usual!

I'm not saying playing it on original hardware is easy or the best way to play but either I will buy the original games and play em on my PS2 OR I'll wait and see if they eventually get a remake. I have a huge backlog of games retro and brand new I still need to get through and I am not impatient , I will wait for however long I need to to play said games, it's perfectly fine if I can't play them right now eventually it will be back on market maybe or a remade version comes out I could play 3-5 and all the final fantasy games I have spanning all the way from PS1 I have to PS4 in the meantime

Or like Links awakening i love they remade that close to the heart of the original and i can play it on new age consoles
one of common mistakes that gamers make is not understanding the differences between a product and a service. AAA developers they don't care it's all about making a quick fast buck.
The thing with the full on remakes is that they are fundamentally, different experiences. The personalities of older games is tied to both the time and hardware they were made for. Thats what is missing when you fully remake them, the vibe is different. No young gamer is obligated to play older games as they were. But it’d be nice if audiences and companies at least gave a shit about proper preservation. We do it for movies, television, books etc. Why not games?
We could have innovative ideas if they listened to consumers. I've been writing a book that I think would work well as a game, but the topics brought up would probably be considered too dark to be profitable. The sanitized themes and minimal content are really holding the industry back.
It's not that they're running out of ideas. They just want lots of easy money with very low risk, and what better way than to make a remake, remaster, etc, because you get a built in fanbase in the process. And, they get to even widen the audience by adding all the various sexualies and genders to gain even more money. Making something original takes far too much risk for the Game Industry now days. Which is why I'm hoping Indie developers become a bit more evolved in their game creations. So instead of making another low budget Metriovannia clone, actually take that genre to the next level. BE what SOTN was to Castlevannia 4. BE what Castlevannia 4 was to Castlevannia's 1, 2, and 3. Actually push it to the next level.
I just recently found you and started to follow you. Really great idea for a video 😊. Remakes and remasters can be very awesome. But sometimes I feel like they are over doing it. But I completely understand why they are. Getting these awesome games out to gamers who hasn't played them yet or maybe never heard of them till now. I'm a old school gamer. I'm in my 30's and I prefer physical games. Two remasters I'm really looking forward to is lollipop chainsaw repop and shadows of the damned hella remastered. Lollipop chainsaw repop is getting a physical thanks to LRG and im ordering it soon. I'm hoping the same for the other. Sorry for the long comment. Really great video. I enjoyed it.
Games cost exponentially more now than they did in the past. Like 10x more in some instances. Remakes and ports make sense given the fact that even successful game devs still face studio closure if their game isn't the next Fortnite. It sucks, but until costs come down, I don't see us getting some good original AAA games. (indie games will fill in the hole until then)
Nothing wrong with remakes, remasters, and ports as long as they're good and arent lazy. stuff like Persona 3 Reload and Resident evil 4 remake were amazing remakes. The remaster of most games adds a fair amount of quality of life improvements and slightly better graphics, and ports are a good thing to have. Before Persona 5 royal got ported you needed a PS4 to play it. now its on literally every platform and millions of more people have access to the game. without ports tons of games would be stuck behind an old console younger gens don't have access to, and that exact thing was the case with a lot of PSP, Vita, PS2, PS1, PS3, and WII games.
Its all a lazy cash grab. Game devs want the path with least resistance. Theyre on a path to our wallets and innovation poses too much risk and resistance. So, they remake old games and pretend theyre doing it to "preserve the games for new generations" lol. If they were so benevolent they would sell the games for cost. Why sell for these large profits again when youre just upgrading a fully made game? No more refried games👎🏽
