Is this Peak Gaming?: My Trails in the Sky Arc Review
I need to add some of these to the backlog 👀
The ps2 truly has such an amazing catalog!
Whoa… more beautiful black mommies talking about jrpgs please algorithm
PlayStation in general PS1, PS2, PS3(maybe not so much), PSP, PSVITA, PS4. PS5 not there yet tbh
Ps2 era was the last of the true golden era of gaming, and still a ps2 fan boy, i still have ps2 slim hookup to my ctr, the last of quality over quantity .it's not the same anymore online.has changed everything both good and bad .no balance no art it's just business nowadays. The real games are done by independent developers today my ps4.is the last.system I will ever buy I have no desire for anything else .I prefer old school.ps2 games over anything in gamming today
Yes and It was definitely atlus's golden age
Disgustingly underrated channel. Great presentation, very pleasant voice, and well-argued points... consider me a new fan. As someone who grew up during that era and played a ton of PS2 JRPGs this video spoke to my soul
I'm on the other end of it when it comes to sharing my time with books and video games. I spent most of my free time reading and very little gaming and it doesn't help the backlog go down at all. I'm still hoping to create a routine to help balance that out
My take is that most jrpgs are longer than necessary.
I feel like I had a great time with JRPGs on the ps2 but I can’t say I go back to many of them. Ps1 and SNES are my go to generations. A lot of quality on ps2 though. I’ll never forget getting Disgaea, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, and Atelier Iris in such a short period of time. There’s also so many games I never got to play from that era.
Metaphor Refantazio, Shin Megami Tensai, and Persona all have amazing cover art. Atlus keeping JRPGs in business!
Atlus definitely has a great eye for art!☺️
PS2 had Dragon Quest 8, that's enough for me haha
PS2 and the SNES just have the most stacked line ups of JRPGs man. So many incredible classics...
SNES has entered the chat.
wow your vids are awesome!! just subbed, can't wait to see more :) lately i have been OBSESSED w FF12, just nothing like it out there!
I need to give FF12 another try, I've heard so much good about it.😊
nah. the last decade has been a blast for rpgs. undertale+deltarune, modern persona and fantazio recently, sea of stars, like a dragon, noer automata etc
Ehh We've eating well but a lot of them have been very formulaic
I remember begging for more jrpgs in that era. Snes/ps1 era was waaaaay better
Begging for more? We over 100 in North America
Ps2 was cool but I liked gamecube jrpgs more so moslty Skies of arcadia legends and paper mario Thousand year door.
Kh2, ffx, and ffxii literally carried my lonely little childhood
Love the JRPG content! Keep it up!
Sooo many faves from PS2 era. FFX is one of my favourite games in general and it definitely influenced me growing up
My favorite JRPG is still Tales of The Abyss. Just happens to be on ps2
You have to try Rogue Galaxy
I can't wait to watch this when I get home.
A lot of faves were made in this time Final Fantasy X, Arc the Lad Twilight of the Spirits, Kingdom Hearts I and II, Paper Mario TTYD, Dragon Quest VIII, Legaia 2 Duel Saga. I regret never getting the chance to play the Dark Cloud and Shadow Hearts games.
The PS2 era was truly great, and you're right, the level of experimentation on display was remarkable. Shadow Hearts Covenant, the Xenosaga trilogy, the (much-maligned) Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter... They were just letting their freak flags fly, and we got so many good games out of it.
It truly such an experimental era! ☺️
Great video Feji! I'm a similar age to you with similar experiences regarding the PS2 (past and present) and I feel the same way. It's never too late to check out some older classics!
Once I’m winter break! I’m definitely going to take time to catch up on the PS2 catalog
Not even close. SNES and PS1 had way better RPGs. FFX is way overrated. Having played the game at my 30s, I can honestly say that the plot is as basic as it gets and it's literally a corridor simulator. People are just nostalgic about it. At least it isn't FFVIII, if I have to say something good about it.
It depends on when you were born. Depending on that, the golden age of JRPGs was eother the SNES, the PS1 or the PS2
the ps2 is magical because it was a time before the standardization of the industry. Some games didn't even utilize the right analog stick. Some of my favorites like Musashi Samurai Legend or Dark Cloud wouldn't be made in todays time.
Great video
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
I never met anyone making this claim tbh, i would say the ps1 and SNES era to be the greatest by a large margin, but the ps2 has many of my favs that is for sure, specially if you put the DS on that gen too, the DS is literally the KING of jRPGs Also, the Dreamcast came out the first on that gem in 99, so PS2 had a peak, it came with better specs but the XBOX came after the PS2 and is still the most powerful console of that gen, if you play the games that it shares with the ps2 you will notice, its like 2 different games, GTA san andreas on the XBOX its like playing a remaster lmao i don't remember if the gamecube is more powerful than the PS2 but i know the XBOX is the n1 on that list for this gem
I have to agree with you. But I will also add that it could be a generational thing. People that played ps2 as a kid might see ps2 as a golden era. One reason I adore the SNES/Genesis era is because we were getting more developed stories. Prior to this time period the story and background was brief…and now go kill stuff. During the 16 bit era it felt like this was a time to see how far can we go with video game story telling. Can a cinematic story be told? Music was becoming more intricate and detailed on the consoles as well.
@@TheGamingHarbinger i can agree with that way of viewing this, IMO the ps2 is also the best given it was the one i played the most, i had all 4 consoles on that gem and the reason i played PS2 the most was because of the jRPGs, it was, it is the genre i love and play the most since i was a little kid, so yeah, it is understandable some people thinking it is the "best" era for jrpgs Maybe the PS2 era was where the genre was "perfected"
Personally for me after playing a lot of JRPGs through emulation with fan translations I would say say the PS1 and SFC were the golden ages of JRPGs
The PS2 had some great RPGs and was a console to have back then. But it can't hold the candle to the PS1. It wasn't easy to keep up with all the great releases
Agreed 💯
Kingdom Hearts I & II and Final Fantasy X literally changed my life
the golden era of rpgs is a two way tie between the snes and ps1.
Sadly since I've always been a Nintendo guy, I missed out on this era of JRPG gaming. Would be awesome to collect for the PS2 and play through these legendary titles one day. Great video, Feji!
It truly was a golden age for JRPGs! 🤩
I was a sega kid with the master system and mega drive then I got a playstation in 96 because I didn't even know the Saturn existed "the Japanese library is one my favourites nowadays" Then got a dreamcast in 99 was sad when sega stopped make consoles then got a ps2 in 2002 :) the 90s/early 2000s were the golden age of gaming imo
ps2 has some of my favorite rpgs, but if any console deserves the title of being "the golden era for rpgs", it can't not be the ps1 that aside, one of favorites for the system that hasn't been covered to hell and back is dark cloud, though is a personal thing since mostly everyone else prefers the sequel
The PS1 is next! We had it in our house but my brother and I didn’t play on it much
Shadow Hearts trilogy especially the 2nd game is my favorite RPG on PS2.
I need to add that collection next 😅
Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Xenosaga Episode I, Okage: Shadow King, Namco x Capcom, Radiata Stories are my golden age of jrpgs on the PS2.
My wishlist is now getting bigger! All these games I’ve heard really good things about
@@cozyfeji oh and Namco X Capcom do have a english patch.
Persona 3, 4, and Kingsom Hearts are my favs and literally changed my life. I haven’t cried so hard I recommend them to my friends to this day.
I might need to play them. Last time I cried during a game was the final fight in ghost of Tsushima.
For me my favourite rpg machine was the ds when i was younger
A lot of my all-time favs like Xenosaga 3 and FFX came out on the PS2 so I'll always have a love for the console. Also, PS2 games had the best openings regardless of genre. Soulcalibur 2, Tekken 5, Tales of the Abyss, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, FFX-2... iconic!
It truly has literal gems on this consoles it’s actually insane! 🥹
❤❤❤
Considering the statw the industry is in right now I wonder whether the split will be more towards new games than old remakes. Resources seem to be getting concentrated towards a few stable series with just the occasional new thing every now and then, and it sometimes feel like a toss-up if the "stable thing" will be a big budget remake or a brand new game in a series, or if the new thing will be a remake with lighter budget (more like a remaster) or a smaller game like the Asano games. Personally I feel like Asano team (or rather from what I understand, the designers in Asano team that contract various developers since I believe there's no "internal" sdt of devs and sprite artist?) might move over more to remakes if DQ3 is a success. Probably Square Enix making the calculated choice that if they can make the same sales from remakes and brand new games, making a remake is the safer bet. We know they're at least moving towards concentrating their money on their AAA titles, so alas- far fewer experiments like Strangers of Paradise in the future, I fear. If I can make a recommendation purely because I want to spread the love for what was my very first JRPG franchise, it would be getting into the Mana series- The Switch has a compilation of the first three games (exclusive there since SE lost source-code to the SNES game Trials of Mana but Nintendo keeps copies of all games released for their formats so... gotta play nice with them if you want to borrow their stuff), there's a remake of the PS1 game Legends of Mana for all formats (though that one is VERY experimental) and there're two bigger budget modern games- a remake of Trials of Mana I truly recommend, and the latest game in the series, Visions of Mana. All of these games are GORGEOUS visually speaking, and quite fun action-RPG's that manage to be decent enough plotwise to get you to the ending... even if I personally feel the latest, Visions, is a bit too light plot-wise and doesn't go very far into it's themes. But Trials of Mana remake is an easy reccomend for all action-interested audiences.
This was a really well made video.
I don't know why but this video made me soft cry! I think it was just so nice and wholesome to see someone talk about the games that excite them. The time and interactivity that we put into games, means we internalize them so much more than other forms of art. So as a gamer I know how meaningful it can feel to share your thoughts and let it all out! Thanks for sharing
One thing I think is being forgotten about is Square Enix's long history in making handheld games. I think the switch merging Nintendo's home console and handheld console has made people forget slightly that Square was investing tons of time into developing many smaller budget titles for the DS and 3DS for years. Once the switch came out and the vita died off, many of the teams that made these types of games kept making games but moving to home console as well gave these games more visibility to people who mostly played on console or PC. I do think it's interesting now that you mention it, that these games often didn't rely on the bigger franchise branding. I suppose it would be interesting to look at the budgets of these titles and see if they are smaller. It could be that square and other companies are willing to take more risk with less budget attached to the games.
Great topic! It mostly does feel like it's a bit rare to have new IPs, with ones being a breath of fresh air as Metaphor Refantazio and Triangle Strategy. Obviously, it's more of a risk with ambition and the ROI thing as well trying to create something original and standout without being needlessly compared to something else. As Remakes/Remasters within some exceptions are kinda low risk, and will likely generate ROI than newer stuff, thus being safe. There's also new franchise entries both a 50-50 risk not as much as Remakes I would say, that will also sell likely more than a brand new IP. Overall, I do think we're at the age with AAA where development costs are overblown with lots of budget, long development time, needing to sell lots of units to break even, generate ROI, meet sales expectations and often nowadays, regardless a game does well or not, there's an abundance of layoffs and after layoffs (and while it doesn't Japan as they are laws, still there are things like re-structures involving cancelling lots of projects among also pressure rooms).
I would welcome scaled-down remakes: something that is modern, but doesn't require a strong computer to run. In addition to requiring an insane amount of data to download, and being extremely expensive. That said, I played exactly one JRPG so far, and might be wrong about it.
