Fantastic video! You mentioning how the genre was being clowned (basically) in like 2010 is no lie. It was definitely the dude bro era and shooters were coming in hot. That’s for sure. JRPG’s are definitely going hard and the year isn’t even over! That’s awesome!
The reason for the resurgence is due to Western made games, whom were at their high points in early 2010’s suddenly shifted focus on online battle royal, live service competition , online only multiplayer games and micro-transaction. That sudden shift only got gamers to turn back the other way to what made gaming great in the first place especially consoles.
We've been getting so many new JRPGs over the past few years, so it definitely feels like a new golden era for the genre! It's exciting, and I seriously cannot wait for more JRPGs!
Yeah can definitely feel in this new decade we're in, a more consistent quality and quality with JRPGs every year, since 2020, and even before that with 2017 and 2019. But after 2020, it's been non-stop and I'm all the more for it here! also grats on 2K subs!
It’s only recently, in like the past 5 years that I’ve gotten really into jrpgs. Mostly cause of the time commitment hahaha but i love the depth of story
Microsoft made a big push for JRPGs on the Xbox 360. They got Mistwalker to make Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. They also got a lot of other JRPGs, like Tales of Vesperia. They got other ones that I enjoyed (not saying they were great) like Infinite Undiscovery and Eternal Sonata. Others that I didn't play like Enchanted Arms. There were more too. Maybe ones I played and I'm not thinking of and maybe other ones I did play I also can't think of :D They made a big push to try for success in Japan... to not much success.
Absolutely LOVED this video! Such thoughtful analysis about nostalgia, accessibility, global economics, genre blending, and more! Incredible job as always!
More and more pc releases and pc ports are also helping the genre (kingdom hearts is #1 seller on steam right now) The growth of anime worldwide helps as well. Coming from the late 90s my first jrpg was secret of mana on the SNES but my love for the genre started with FF7 on PS1, suikoden 2 being my favorite rpg to this day but it’s more acceptable social-wise to play video games in general now. Within the jrpg renaissance there’s also a tactical jrpg renaissance (ever since Fire Emblem Three Houses if we think about it) and i couldn’t be happier.
Great video with great point. If you like that 2D HD style I highly recommend looking at Unicorn Overlord by Atlus. I know it’s more Tactics / Strategy but it somehow scratches the JRPG itch too. I’m new to your channel so I didn’t look too hard to see so sorry if you already have played it!
Kojima wrote a article late aughts or early 10’s about the Japanese companies not innovating and pushing out the same old same old and that’s why they fell off, they came back with the help of the zoomers and persona 5 making it hip.
Maybe it's just me, but I like to think SNES to PS1 to DS in terms of golden era. Like do you know how many JRPG there were in a DS? Way too much, lol XD Like in terms of retro gaming, I have the most amount of games in both DS and PS2 (I have games that goes way back to NES). But most of my DS games are JRPG. Is just that DS didn't make games that were as memoriable as the one that came before like Chrono Trigger, Lunar, Chrono Cross, Suikoden, and Final Fantasy from PS1 for example (People favorite Rune Factory, Pokemon Super Robot Wars, Ni no Kuni, Dragon Quest, Mario & Luigi RPG, and Inazuma Eleven are from DS though, as well as better version of Chrono Trigger). So if you are only counting the memorable ones, then maybe you can discount that, or maybe you can not count that since in 2011 the only console with many JRPG was DS, and 1 console wasn't good enough or something in a era where there were many console or something, idk, but there were way too many JRPG in DS though. (You say early 2000s, but DS life lasted from 2004 all the way to 2011, that's why I mentioned this even though alot of people seem to say 1990s to 2000s) Lol XD
I'd personally dispute the idea that JRPGS are more faithfully translated and I genuinely hate it when they're culturally tailored for western players.
Your channel doesn't get anywhere near the love it deserves!
Thank you! That really means a lot to me☺️

Yep! We’re only in June and the amount of JRPGs we’ve gotten this year is crazy!
Oh man, loved the background music!
Awesome video! I agree with you; Xenogears would look great in that 2DHD style
Right?! I need that remake now!
The revival of the handheld in switch and steamdeck is helping this revival to be honest.
That’s honestly true! These two handhelds are my go to’s for JRPGs!

Yeah! JRPGs are definitely a time sink but I love ‘em😊
We are in a JRPG renaissance, I just wish I had infinite time and money to keep up 😅
Ain’t that the truth!!😂

Yeah I also wish Xenogears would make a comeback. And I enjoyed Chrono Cross back I on the PS1, and I still have my copy of it.
I hoping for more ps1 titles to be remade, remastered or ported to modern consoles!
@@cozyfeji Right! *slowly looks at my copy of FFVIII*

I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Unicorn Overlord is on my list! I played a little bit of the demo and it’s definitely right up my alley!☺️
Fantastic video. Keep up the fantastic work! Loved your knowledge and passion for my favorite genre!
Wow I glad you watched and enjoyed the video! 😊
Wonderful video! i really need to complete Octopath traveler someday, i'm currently playing SMT V Vengeance and am really enjoying it.
So close to 2k! Love your vids 😊
Great video!
I recently played through "Felvidek" made on RPGmaker MV. Silly, funny, original. Love how many niche rpgs and stories there are nowadays
Same! I’m hoping for more stories to be told!

great vid love hearing fresh perspectives on my favorite genres
This is beautiful keep it up
Thank you so much!😊
Also Microsoft and EA ate up alot of the good Western Developers and forced them to make crappy games for MLG and the Korean Competitive Gamers.
Star Ocean mentioned ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great video! ❤😊
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Great video.

It was people born in the 80s who grew up with Chrono Trigger, FFVII, and DQVII, not people born in the 90s and 2000s lol
what about league of legends? do you reveiw console games?
