Everyone tells you to get your weight forward in the downswing, but they forget to tell you to keep your head behind the ball. Learning this is what resolved my fat contact and sliced ball flight.
Solid information! Has been really helping me improve my swing and has gotten me putting the ball further.. Still working on the elevated driver, but my fairway woods got some very improved distance added! I need to hit off the grass to practice off the Tees
The forward movement of the head in the downswing explains some of the propensity I have to hit behind the ball. Thanks! I had not made that connection and will be more aware of that. The shadow drill is always available here in north Texas! I enjoy your teaching and find it challenging, well explained, and useful.
Great video Eric! I was studying the shank shot and I worked out that moving the head forward may contribute to the shank as moving the head forward encourages a steep angle of attack. Cheers Eric
Why is this never talked about? I feel very lucky to have made this epiphany. Who knows how long I would have struggled with contact if I hadn’t? This seems like it’s one of the most important elements to the golf swing.
For real. Made the epiphany from watching Bryson with the high left shoulder. It will look weird initially when making the switch because your eyes aren't looking directly down the shaft. Works well with putting too. Golfer for 20 years and got to a 4 handicap inconsistently without doing this. Much more consistent now, and my wedges and irons are finally dialed in doing this. Hoping to drop it to 1-2.
Eric this is a good one for me. I was going to an instructor and he said I was getting too far ahead and my release was late. By product of watching too many videos of holding lag perhaps? Swing is all jacked up now back to basics..... Nevertheless thanks for posting this content. I really think this drill regardless of your skill level will never hurt.
Hope it helps ya Patrick! As you mentioned you know your fault. The key is to see your swing on video and understand the fault so you can immediately exaggerate the opposite movements to find middle. Record, assess ,adjust.
@@CogornoGolf TBH in this order helped me just in case you wanted feedback. I am not a talented golfer but I can get around now. Grip, turning the lead shoulder down (which was a brilliant video and so true) and this staying behind the ball. I noticed this with my own swing the idea of getting on the lead foot for many means shifting the whole body which positions you way ahead of the ball and leads to disasters. I noticed if the trail shoulder is working correctly it sort of organically keeps you behind the ball.
Eric, Great video! Cristal clear! Very helpful! With my driver, in the down swing, while keeping my head behind the ball, it becomes very difficult to end the follow through. Thanks for any advice to enable me to complete my follow through until the end of it. Carlos
Hey Eric. Do you have a video on the driver and keeping the head back? I tend to slide with the driver only but if I force my head to stay back I make better contact and I can close the face. Or, do these drills and feelings still make sense for driver as well? Thanks!!!

I do love this because on video I clearly move my head toward the target on the downswing. HOWEVER, when I try to keep my head back near where it started, it keeps my weight back in my LOWER body as well - I can feel a TON of weight/pressure in my right (trail) toes. How does one transfer most of the weight to the left leg while keeping the upper body back?

Hi Eric,I've always had a hard time with the concept of keeping my head back and shifting my weight forward! So I tend to move my upper body and head towards the target to get the weight onto my left side........can it feel like when you get the pressure into your left foot you are kind of pushing back into the ground to keep your upper body and head back?? So you are essentially pushing into the ground with your left leg to keep your upper body back more?? Thanks
Thanks Tyrone! Too many possible variables that cause fat shots for me too simply....need to see your swing to say for sure. Make sure 1. Weight forward enough 2. Left shoulder and hip stay low to start down 3. Right arm and right wrist still bent at impact
Eric, I have been struggling with toe shots and low left ball flight for a year now.... I realized my head seems to be sliding forward on the downswing. Can this be a cause of toe strikes?
Hey Justenn! Thanks for watching! Without seeing your swing on video, we'd simply be guessing too much my friend. Send in your swings to www.cogornogolf.com so we can give you the best advice and build you the best possible practice plan! Hope to see you join the team👊
Would your head moving forward not result in low point too far ahead of the ball, i.e. thin as opposed to fat? My low point point is too far forward and the feeling of the head staying back seems to help.
Yes it for sure can... With irons you want your head to move forward only a very little bit from top of backswing to about left arm parallel in downswing (so only like first foot or so) Then it stays back until arms parallel in follow through
Eric, does keeping your head behind the ball, while at the same time moving your head down during the weight shift facilitate a delayed release? This may be a good video topic.
Hi Eric, I usually have no secondary tilt at setup, just neutral. Does this additional tilt (irons) at setup would help to stay behind the ball or bring other complications? Thank you.
I think the importance of this swing key can NOT be understated. So many swing faults can be fixed by learning how to coil and uncoil BEHIND the golf ball. What made this all come together for me and later for others I’ve instructed (my friends/family), is to get them to focus their swing intention on the hitting of the golf ball and not on trying to swing the club down the target line towards where they want the ball to end up. It’s a subtle distinction but what I noticed was with a target oriented swing intention, it pretty much forces you to start moving your body forward and down the target line (early extension/early release) before you’ve even hit the ball! Whereas, if you make the striking of the golf ball your swing intention, you very naturally stay in the shot and behind the ball and the finish takes care of itself. Watch slow-mo footage of major league bball batters in action and you see this as well - their lead leg strides towards the target but their upper body and head stay behind the ball as they uncoil their swing AT THE BALL. Maybe some oversimplification there but that’s the gist of it. 😊. Good stuff!
Spent the last week going through all of your TH-cam vids, taking notes, and now have a much better understanding of what to look for in finding faults in my swing. Randomly, can you do a swing analysis on Matthew Wolff, the college golfer? Seems like he's getting a lot of play, might be an interesting video. Thanks again!
I love this, especially with a driver down to about 7 iron....I will do it sometimes with even a 50* wedge to clear a tall tree and get it 120 yards at the same time....my feel is that I’m hitting the wedge like a driver somewhat.....quick note, Bubba Watson looks a lot like Jack Nicklaus with his swing reversed to right handed, I also wanna say....Rory’s swing is probably the most beautiful looking swing in terms of looks.
How weird is this.? Last night at the range, my friend who is a scratch player was helping me work on this very same thing, mainly with the driver. It was very enlightening to see when done correctly how far I could fly ball even with a less than 1/2 swing. Just to note, I was very handsy, and was throwing my right shoulder out. Very glad you posted this Eric, as it gives me a great visual and I can come back to this when I stray from doing this correctly...Thanks
So important a move for a releasing the club and promoting extension in the the follow thru. Question. At what point in the downswing/follow thru do you you release or rotate your head toward the target. You weren’t exactly clear on that point. Thank You
Thanks Robert....the head should be turning along with the chest rotation ideally. Watch a slow motion of your favorite swings here on youtube and you can answer your question
one other benefit is that to get to the loaded position on your back leg your head doesnt have to sway much at all. If you setup with the ball in the middle of your head then you have to move your head to get to the loaded position too much.
Once again Eric coming through clutch. Funny seeing this when early in my golf career I was taught basically to slide over to shift my weight to the left side
I've been workin on hitting "up and out" with my driver. I'm always like -2 AOA trying to get to even or maybe up 2* now I'm hitting on the toe with the driver quite a bit.. ball position maybe?!?!
