    Interesting field test. Definitely proves the point of applied technology in different awd platforms. I've owned a GC8 many years ago and now the wife and I own a 2018 Outback Touring 3.6R. it's truly an amazing car all around. We drove about an hour from home to Buck Rock up in the Sequoia Mountains. Got a little lost on a trail that turned out to be way trickier than we thought, ended up in a spot where only built 4x4s go. Got greeted by some good ole boys who thought we might need a tow. But, nope. She crawled right out after making a tight u-turn on an embankment and I know if were in my truck or Sorento, we'd be screwed. But man...this thing is can do it all.

      I have the exact same outback….it’s a fantastic piece of kit. It makes everything look easy and has a good turn of speed about it if needed.

    • @MirisDesignStudio
      @MirisDesignStudio ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed! It's almost shockingly fast once we are at highway speeds. Plus, the paddle shifters are quite handy. We've relocated to North Carolina and I've switched to the new Michelin Climate 2s which handle the icy roads and snow when we get it just fine. I'm thinking of getting a summer set of Pilot Sport Cups on another set of OEM wheels. But it's performance and reliability over the last 5 years has been great. Other than the head unit which seems to be a problem across the board. Honestly, I'd be happy swapping this engine into an old GC8/6 with a simple STi 6-speed. But this engine deserves more respect. Felt much more responsive than the turbo option we test drove. I'm sure others would disagree with me but after 5 years, this engine just feels like it's broken in and actually pulls quite hard wide open. @@richardlove4287

    Two different AWD systems. Subaru AWD is designed for wheel symmetry making it a beast handling any type of off road or snowy conditions. Audi AWD is designed for a sportier feel leveraging power to the wheels that have the most traction which is why it sucks when 3 of the wheels are on rollers. All down to personal preference on the type of driving you normally do but both are A+ systems compared to the field

    Good video. No BS, just test. I'd also like to see these same tests on inclines, to see if the one wheel has enough torque to get you up a hill (like if you're driving up a snow-covered or icy driveway or live in the mountains). Another way to simulate this may be just to put a brick under the wheel with traction. I have seen, for example, a video of a subaru which wasn't losing too much traction but couldn't get over an exposed root on a steep hill off road (wheels just stopped spinning, even with X-mode) bc system couldn't/wouldn't transfer enough torque. To get over obstacle or up steep hills is not only a question of shifting power to wheels with grip but of how much power can be shifted.

I went to their website and it only talks about why their system is the best or better than others. Wouldn't part time be more fuel efficient? I, for one only need it in heavy snow (few months in the winter) other than that, if I could turn it off to save fuel, it would be really cool!

    Nice way to point out Subaru has always had an advantage with their awd system in this way
    The drawback to the Subaru system however is that it depends on electronic control and viscous couplings. Break a wire somewhere or lose an abs sensor and the awd system either becomes disabled or goes haywire.
    Audi uses mechanical torsen differentials, you would have to physically destroy the differential internals to lose awd functionality.

    Its rocking action that has to do with the gas pedal being played with that causes that back and forth momentum which inevitably gets the spinning tire to catch the frame on the roller and it gains forward traction. The rollers would have to be placed precisely and affixed to the ground , and even then the rocking action caused by pedal manipulation can still get the vehicle to lurch back and forth until a tire catches the fixed edge of the rollers frame and send it forward.

    Which system is better in terms of a much quicker response in minimizing slip?

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers
      @4x4.tests.on.rollers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edu.G I'm not sure what you mean. Air lockers are for offroad, they lock the diffs and that's all.
      When it comes to Subaru - what electronic limited slip diff you mean? For front and rear diffs they use only brake based systems (in the past they used lsd at rear). For center diff they use clutch instead of diff or a diff integrated with clutch in some models. Or mechanical LSD, but this one is already finishing its carieer.

    I've owned an Audi A4 and a Subaru, and both were very capable in snowy, icy Minnesota winters, with snow tires, of course. Where Subaru shines as a brand is that every model has the same AWD system, no need to research Audi's confusing use of different Torsen and Haldex systems in different models. Although Subaru wins for me (I ditched the Audi after the heater core blew), Audi's use of galvanized steel is superior to most other brands for durability. The 20-year old Audi I used to have had only a dime size of rust on the whole thing. My 10-year old Subaru keeps me spraying rust killer and stuggling with rusty bolts. Wish I could buy an A6 with a 3.6 flat six boxer engine :)

    Nice test but it's important to note that the Subaru AWD isn't mechanically any better. It's still got open diffs on both ends with no mechanical lockers. That's not to say it's not impressive however. Where they've got everyone beat is in software. The VDC sees that 3 wheels are spinning and one isn't, so it applies the brakes to the spinning wheels to send torque to the one with grip. Sounds simple but it's actually pretty difficult to do effectively. They use the same tech for the active torque vectoring on the WRX since it doesn't have DCCD like the STI.

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers
      @4x4.tests.on.rollers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      CJRhoades The truth is that nowadays all 'awd wars' are about software, including not only braking, but also active torque split via clutches instead of center diffd.

    I have an Outback (2014 2.5 CVT), my wife has a 2013 TDI Q7. Where we live is mountainous and we get a lot of snow and ice. I manage to get stuck a few times each winter, my wife never gets stuck. Both cars have winter tires.
    Her car is nice, my car is just basic transportation.

      There's way more factors involved in this, you can only really compare the two with the same driver. As a male you more prone to taking chances etc. Not a level comparison.
