    Eric is putting his Commercial French Fry Cutter against an inexpensive cutter from Bed, Bath and Beyond. This commercial cutter gave the cheap one a workout!

    you have to hang it vertically to get good diced veggies. That's how I have mine. Just pull a bowl under it and it's also easier vertically

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree 100%! Vertical is the way to go. We don't have a good wall to do it without having this big clunker get in the way. :-( Next time we move, I'll have to look into that for the kitchen. Thanks for watching and commenting. We appreciate it.

    if you really want to do a comparison test you need to put your gander mountain against a Weston Restaurant Quality French Fry Cutter. that was not really a challenge that's like putting a bicycle against a motor cycle.

    Amazon sells both. Gandar Mountain one I dont think is 80 but it has attachement cutter grids. ok appears to be 78. If you got prime I guess no shipping charge . It will come in 2 days as well. The other one Im not sure. I see the western one too on there. They all seem to be made the same as Gandor Mountain but in different colors. Black still red and green. Different brands. The Westen one looks like it too.Amazon also the one from from Bed Bath and Beyond is there too so. Its like 30. I not sure whats the best You got about 3 or 4 made the same way.

    Walmart sells ahv duty model same as Gander Mountain one for $60 but I couldn't get it to push a potato through but then I had it a bit too high, i know it must be no higher than waste-high, plus if you attach it to a strong wall you can use the weight of handle and pusher by gravity to require less effort. For big families it's OK but for 2-3 people it's not practical.

    • @AmyLearnsToCook
      @AmyLearnsToCook  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Hesam0000 The Gander Mountain is a really nice one. It is expensive tho. We plan to take it on camping trips where there are a lot of kids. They would probably get a kick out of fries on a camping trip. For small jobs, a knife works just as well.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you enjoyed it and subscribed. Thanks for your comment. This review "wasn't" supposed to be this hard. Amy had one of these small cutters, and it did a good job until she lost/misplaced the blades. We bought this one thinking the parts would be interchangeable, or would at least work as good as the previous one. No to both. Soooo, we got the big one as a joke. Harbor Freight sold one that is a lot cheaper, but its reviews say it is harder to clean and doesn't come with the suction cups. I think a food processor would work for most jobs, but then we wanted to test the Breville Smart Fryer we recently bought. Soooooo, that led to a few more videos and ultimately Amy claimed they were the best fries ever. Hint: She's eaten a lot of fries over the years! I hope you find some other videos as entertaining, although this was the only one where I had to dang near beat up a tool to make it sort of work.

  • @up4itgal
    @up4itgal 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    More expensive but definitely worth the money, the Mountain cutter was waaaay better ha ha but how easy was it to clean and does it maintain it's sharpness over time? Maybe you could let us know after a few uses :-)

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for watching. Clean up was easy as the three brass wing nuts easily allows you to remove the cutter blades, which are VERY SHARP. I cut my index finger not being careful :( The back screws allow you to remove the 'pusher' piece. The shiny sheet metal on the bottom slides out easily to be washed. I wiped the suction cup feet off since they got littered with potatoes. I suppose you could rinse the whole thing, just don't toss it in a dishwasher. As for durability, that will be a little hard to test as we don't fry a lot of things. I bought this more as a novelty thing but ended up loving it. I'll do some more videos in the near future on how to cook the perfect two step French fry and will cut up and fry some sweet potato fries and anything else that you might want me to try. Heck, I need to get my money's worth out of this thing :)

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Stopped watching at 3:05 to post this. If the cheaper cutter needs that much force to cut that small of a potato, it's junk. But I suspected as much because it's plastic. The other one is solid metal and I would bet it is a breeze to cut the biggest. hardest potatoes as long as the blade is sharp. My 20+ years of restaurant and catering experience has taught me that professional quality is most times built better, performs better, and lasts longer. Pro quality is usually worth the extra $$$. I'm going to finish watching now and find out if I'm right.

    • @sdushdiu
      @sdushdiu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A more reasonably priced HD press would indeed be handy. But given the price of well-reviewed units like the New Star 38408 for $126 on Amazon and a flimsy $20 something presses at the other extreme, the choice is not very compelling for either. Other more acceptably priced cast units are available for prices in between those two (~$65+), but in each case, there are reports of difficult or simply unobtainable consumable replacement parts... Oh well....
      I have been looking for one of these for many years, but given the exorbitant price for a decent resilient unit, I guess that I'll simply continue to muddle along and cut them by hand. Thanks for your work! ;-)
      Now if I could only fit a unit onto the PTO of my backhoe.... ;-)

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sdushdiu Thanks for watching and your comment. Gander Mountain was the only place that we could locally source a cutter. Harbor Freight's is a piece of junk. I agree these are not comparible, which was part of the humor in making this video. Too many people took it literal. But the crappy Bed, Bath and Beyond version DID a good job years ago, which prompted me to buy another one and it didn't hold up nearly as good as the old one......and hence the idea of this video....only if we didn't lose parts to the original....but then our loss was your gain. :-)

    There's a good reason In-N-Out Burger restaurants use the commercial cutter. The Bed Bath & Beyond unit probably wouldn't last half a day with their big Kennebec spuds. Furthermore, they mount the cutters on a wall and place a bowl underneath, so the operator is flipping potatoes into the cutter with the left arm and slamming the handle down with the right arm in a single, continuous stroke - bing bing bong bong.

    • @AmyLearnsToCook
      @AmyLearnsToCook  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A commercial setting definitely needs a commercial cutter. The BBB one wouldn't last 5 minutes.

    I just talked myself out of ordering a Fry Cutter, since I really don't make fries that often... but now you got me thinking, what a time saver having one would be, when making Sweet Potato Fries!
    WEBstaurantStore has a similar version for $36.99...It looks similar to this brand, but I wonder what the difference in quality is. The one you have looks pretty heavy duty.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are absolutely correct. I was wanting to make the third video in our series on the Waring Pro Rotisserie turkey fryer and steamer to show how it handles regular fried foods. So being in a pinch, we knew of a local Harbor Freight that had a heavy duty cutter and learned of the nearby Gander Mountain having a much more expensive one. WebStaurantStore has the one you mentioned, but no way I'd get it that weekend (would have had to plan for it). As it was, we didn't quite get to the point of firing up the fryer that night. So we postponed that video. Now that Thanksgiving is out of the way, I'll likely get some bags of potatoes to test making fries.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm thinking if fries are easier to make using one of these instead of using a knife, then would you eat fries more often? Is that the only thing holding you back? We don't always eat potatoes on the weekends, but when we do, it's usually slices (either using the food processor or by knife). Now this gives us another option. Besides, when I do my Epic Hamburger episode, you just KNOW it has to have a "DECENT" amount of fresh fries, right? Besides, I want to make some chili cheese fries. I think I can start learning to like this thing.

    • @EricLearnstoCook

      Thanks for watching. Of course store bought is cheaper. But then, if you go to Restaurant Depot and buy a 50# sack of potatos, then this pays for itself in a hurry. Plus, what additives are in those frozen fries, let alone, what is in those McDonald fries? Does anyone know? Do you want to know? There are cheaper commercial ones and then there are much more expensive commercial ones. It just depends on where you buy it and what you want. Do you want a wall mounted one that has few removable parts, then I think you can save some bucks over this one. But for us, yup, cheaper to just get the store bought junk :)

    Recently upgraded from the small unit to the larger unit (different brands, same machines) the reason had to do with the small machine not being able to do larger potatoes. The Gander style machine is sold under several brands, the big issue is if you need different cutters. some come with one blade, others with several blades and supposedly some do not fit other brands. Keep this in mind if you plan on potato wedges or shoestring fries. On the small machine it's possible to install the cutter in backwards...with the dull side facing the potato...making it harder to operate. I agree the Gander style machine is well worth the cost. Did notice mine (Weston brand) had a hard time with an onion, most likely I will not use it for onions again.

Harbor Freight has a small one that could work, but I didn't try it. The idea being the $20 at BBB doesn't work on potatoes anymore. Thank you for subbing, we appreciate that. I hope you enjoy our other videos. We are working on a new website for amylearnstocook.com We will announce when it is up. The current one is a little neglected. The new one has a recipe database, and we're putting that all together. We'll announce when it is up. I hope you enjoy our videos and good luck with your home cooking!!!

      Oh no! It died. Yeah, Webstaurant.com has one that's around $30 and looks to be just as good. I was just in a hurry to have one in my hands. No one sells these locally but Gander Mountain, which I heard is closing some stores :-( Well, for $11 you can't beat 2 or 3 years of faithful service. Amy bought one cheap at BBB and it worked fine (but we either lost parts or something). The one she replaced it with absolutely sucked. Glad you had much better experience.

      Thank you for watching James. I hope you enjoyed it. This was partially a learning experience but also for fun. We loved our old slicer, but the new one was such a piece of junk that we felt we had to throw it under the bus by putting it up against this bigger slicer. If you haven't watched it, we made some sweet potatoes, so Yes, this thing can slice them, but it takes a little preparation.

      Arthur Arnold Hi Arthur. This was supposed to be an "out of the box" review. Our previous upload was an unboxing of the French Fry Cutter. In the end, Eric really liked the Gander Mountain over the cheap BBB cutter and we use it all the time. Thanks for watching.

      +E J Darly Thanks for watching and commenting. We appreciate that. We initially did this video as a joke because there is no way you can objectively compare the two. A long time ago, Amy had a slicer similar to the little one, and it did a great job. Unfortunately, Bed, Bath, and Beyond only carries this junk which is fairly useless, unless you are slicing something soft like a tomato. I had never used the commercial one before. It is much easier to PULL the handle than to push it as some have pointed out. I really like it and combined with the Breville Smart Fryer using the twice fry method, the fries are outstanding.

      I didn't even realize this was like a joke video even though it did make me laugh a little bit but I was really trying to figure out what kind to get and if I really needed to put up that much cash in order to get the results I'm after. I still found it helpful though.

    • @AmyLearnsToCook
      @AmyLearnsToCook  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +E J Darly We did a real test but Eric knew in advance that the little one would never stand up to the big one. It was fun tho! The little one couldn't really cut anything! The Gander Mountain cutter is really nice but it is expensive.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +E J Darly In all honesty, you don't need to spend this much money. We bought this at Gander Mountain because they have a store in our area and we could get our hands on one that day (to shoot the video). Plus we like french fries :-) Webstaurant dot com has one 1/2 the price and looks to be about the same. You'd have to look at it and it's reviews to see if it is something you'd like. Just like any equipment, you need to see if it is meant for you. I hit Harbor Freight for a real cheap one. About $10 and it is junk. It can mount to a wall or a board, but does not come apart for easy cleaning, thus a fail. I returned it without using it. The Gander Mountain one does come apart. I hand wash it because there's enough aluminum mixed with the stainless steel cutters to invite a certain death (mine and the cutter) if I used the dishwasher. So you need to figure out if a food processor will do the trick, using a knife and slicing by hand, or getting something like this. I like this because of the even fries in the middle of the potato. The ones on the round/edge of the potato do not come out as uniform and must either be tossed out, or cooked only with similar size/shape for best even cooking. Best of luck and let us know how it goes for you on whatever decision you make.

      Thanks for watching. It was fun. I can't believe (well, yes I can) the junk we get. Why not just flush my $15 down a toilet (or $20 if I didn't have a coupon). Now I just need Amy to find the receipt and orginal packaging so I can return that piece of junk! With the bigger one, I need to re-learn how to love French fries, I suppose?

    Thanks for sharing your experience, buuuuut I rarely if ever give a thumbs down. The extremes were too far apart for the information to be useful. Well... actually, I just thought about it some more and withdrew my thumbs down. I can now see the value.
    Actually, I am not planning to cook alot french fries very often, but I am planning to buy a fryer soon with the specific intent to make french fries. Well... If I do not mind, cutting the potatoes into smaller sizes. The 20 dollar item from BBB should be adequate.
    Niiiiice... lol...and oh... I still think that either comparing against a competitor at the same pricepoint or at least choosing a model in the middle and not high-end would have been a more fair comparison... Buuuuuut.... the more I think about it, the more enjoyed the video afterall....Thanks again....

      Thanks for watching. We made this partly out of humor. We bought a cheap cutter from BBB years ago that worked fine. We lost parts to it so we bought another. This one performed so bad compared to the first one, but cost the same, so we figured we'd make a video on it. We then really wanted to make some fries since I have a new deep fat fryer, but nothing would cut them, other than using a knife. There is a cheaper cutter from a restaurant supply store, but we wanted fries same day. So we went to Gander mountain.
      No, you don't need this commercial style one for just a few fries, but the BBB one should give you difficulty at best. If it doesn't work for you, then make sure you use it and return it within the return period. If it does work out for you, then great.
      Glad you enjoyed the video and Happy New Year!!!

  • @EricLearnstoCook

    I like this cutter. It's much easier to pull the handle than to push it. For purposes of filming the potatoes coming out, it's harder to see them coming out if the camera is pointing the way they are pointing. Perhaps this is overkill for small families, but if you don't like hacking up several potatoes or if you want evenly cut fries, then this is good. Some food processors have 'french fry' blades, but they can cut uneven and you still have to take the food processor apart and wash. If you have a place to mount this vertically on a wall, then it can be easier to operate as well, but I have not tried that yet. If you have a decent deep fat fryer, then this is part of pure potato heaven!

    Have either of these cutters been tested on carrots or sweet potatoes? How do they stand up to the challenge of these very-dense root and tuber crops?

    • @AmyLearnsToCook
      @AmyLearnsToCook  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We haven't used it on carrots or sweet potatoes but it should work. This is a commercial grade cutter and it is what they would use in a restaurant.
