    Just been 4 days in Athens. My first time there. This video may be interesting for some but it does NOT show Athens in a fair way. Athens could be one of the must underestimated citys I even been to. Loved it!

      City center of Athens is the worst city center in the world..How ever there are some few very few areas near the center that are better, but not as they should.
      Having lived here in Athens suburbs for more than 35 years I always avoid going downtown, it if filthy and ugly.

      Sorry its late, but it's like that because of time and weather. It's been thousands of years since the Parthenon was built and you can't expect anything to remain as if it was just built for that long.

    Of all the few places I got to explore of Europe as a child, Athens, Greece stood out to me. I remember staying in the hilly terrain of the city, closer to the Parthenon. So I'm glad you gave us a further perspective! I've seen other photos of the extensive colorful graffiti art around the city. It was nice to see the moving montage & freeze frame parts! Can't wait to see your return to the islands!!

    We were in Athens last year for a week and stayed at the Athens Gate Hotel. We had a great time and would return in a heartbeat. As far as graffiti goes, it's expected to have a few in a big city like Athens, even in the San Francisco/Bay Area where I used to live.

    Pretty cool! Did you notice a difference in the area as compared to your previous visits or is it pretty much the same? I’m asking as my guess is that things around the Parthenon may be more run down due to economic difficulties in Greece. It’s such a mind-blowing thing to think of the unbroken civilized history there. As for the audio, I noticed that it was significantly more quiet than the ad which came before the video. I had to push up the volume a bit on my phone. It wasn’t too quiet, though. I didn’t have to increase the volume too much on my phone. Enjoy Mykonos! I’ve never been but have a few friends who have gone. It looks beautiful! 👍🏼✌🏼

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't notice any particular changes, for one thing I'd never walked through that exact neighborhood before in the beginning of the video. The area closer to the Parthenon after Monastiraki Square (where I tried to sell the bicycle) had graffiti and street art around it before, so didn't look any different really. Overall Athens doesn't seem like it's changed too much in recent years, as much as I can tell. But perhaps some of that graffiti is new.

    Hah! Been there for the first time ever this summer! Just a few days in Athens, tho, but love, love, the place!

      mostly because Athens has a greater of four million and almost ALL the money has fled from the central districts into the far flung suburbs to the north, the east and the south...meanwhile, if you had stayed long enough, even in central Athens there still ARE very posh districts to be found (although not of a tourist interest)...this video is taken near the old part of the city that has been abandoned by most locals and businesses and only anything related to the tourists is found (including many immigrants). It is like visiting New York and going to the Bronx only and form there judging the entire metropolitan area

      @@user-wo5dv6gf1g Which areas would you recommend for somebody to visit for more upscale restaurants and such? Piraeus?

    • @user-wo5dv6gf1g
      @user-wo5dv6gf1g 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@johnvictorengland7703 NO Piraeus is a port. There is however a Piraeus district called Microlimano with a choice of fine fish restaurants. Most exquisite restaurants are in the northern and the southern (coastal) suburbs of Athens (where all the money that has left the city center has fled to), but they are far away and hard to reach for tourists visiting the historic city center. But even in central Athens there are some really good restaurants and as of late dozens spring up all the time. Regarding the southern suburbs by the sea (with fine dinning) are Glyfada and Vouliagmeni. In the north of Athens are the exclusive suburbs of Halandri and Kifissia (very close to the Olympic Stadium and installations) with out of this world dinning, but only locals and diplomats know them. Talking about districts and suburbs far away from central, historic Athens that the tourists see. However, even in the city center (Athens)_ there are some really nice restaurants to be found. I recommend KOUZINA in Monastiraki on Adrianou street. But you can find some really valuable information here whyathens.com/restaurants-in-athens/ and here theculturetrip.com/europe/greece/articles/the-6-best-fine-dining-restaurants-in-athens/ or the suburb of Glyfada by the sea www.10best.com/destinations/greece/athens/restaurants/glyfadas-best-restaurants/

Heaven for street artists for sure. With peoples comments about "dysfunctional society", "bankrupt country", etc., I haven't noticed any homeless people on the streets - have you seen them Gabriel? Interesting to see the inserts from previous visits to Athens. Overall audio ok, but I personally like the music a bit louder.

    Much to explore on Crete ,hiking Samariagorge altough might be closed because of wintertime , culture Knossos 4000 years old and also beautiful beaches.
    From Heraklion you can book a cheap flight for instance to Amsterdam with Transavia , dutch charter airlines only €79.00 check Skyscanner site.
    From Amsterdam perhaps more cheap possibilities to anywhere else with Ryanair /easyJet and Transavia.

    Do you ever confuse the countries you visit? I mean, you go through so many continuously...Do you ever wonder if that building, say, or that road or that cafe were actually in the country or city/town you THINK they were, or if they were somewhere else?

    Overall the audio sounds good. The dub track seems a bit low comparatively, but largely another good video production. I have noticed that lately you have been traveling to places in their off seasons. Im curious if you appreciate that due to lack of crowds and better prices?

      Yeah exactly, it's nice to be able to visit these places without a lot of people. Mykonos is almost too quiet as you will see in the next video. It's exactly what I expected it would be, but I'd like to come back in the summer another time when it's busier, to see what it's like when it's really alive.

    I thought the audio was great -- music was fine and I could hear you ok. Besides, I know that if I can't hear what you are saying and it's important, you always edit in the words so we don't miss anything. It must be great to visit a place like Athens again and again --- at different stages in your life and in different seasons. It is winter but there are no crowds, no lines but there are still enough people and other travelers/tourists so that it doesn't feel so weird. Like the other commenters it seems all the graffiti is a reflection of the harsh economic times the Greeks have endured during the last decade. Have to you talked to any of the locals and gained an insight as to how the average person has been coping with the tough times?
    I've been watching your videos for about a year (or two??? I can't remember) and I must say that your videos are getting better and better in terms of video/audio quality and your style of drawing your viewers in -- authentically without the spit and polish but always in a compelling way to satisfy and further one's curiosity of faraway places. All the best in your travels abroad and at home.

    Gabriel you're definitely braver than I. I avoided the sketchy areas by taking the metro to the square and walk from there up to the Acropolis. I'm a large dude and I felt intimidated by the street gangs roaming the Omonia area.

    People complain about graffiti... few words about abandoned buildings and how those could be useful for locals... better with tons of graffiti than fake and full of corporate stores that make cities lookalike the same in most europe

    You gotta love the beauty of the ugliness of these streets! Too many graffiti indeed, It was not like that before...now almost every building seems to have been vandalized by "graffiti". Some like it though.

    It was wrong of you not to get in touch with the woman who offered to store your bike in her apartment. It may well have been taking up space and causing her a little bit of inconvenience, but because of the goodness of her heart she kept it for you anyway. You should have told her you did not want it any more so she could have gotten rid of it without feeling guilty.

  • @RaphaelNation

    You should have at least said hello to her even if you did not retrieve the bike. It’s courtesy... 😂

    U and your sandals! About the bike story: ha ha, yeah this is how things are done in Greece. You sit down and sip a coffee, tell somebody about your problem and then wait for the things to come to you. Things are not done by email, but face to face and in a (very) slow pace. If you can't handle this, then Greece is definitely not for you. So don't u dare coming to Crete! ;)

    Nice Video Gabe, but the centre of Athens is like a Slum... Too much Street art as you call it and most is just pretty bad... We stayed near Omonia Square and it looked pretty much like this video.. If I was to ever to live in Athens it would be further out in the suburbs... Cool view from the Acropolis of Athens... As for the Parthenon, that would have to be one of the most recognisable buildings on the Planet. You can't appreciate the size, unless you walk up to it. :) The Acropolis Museum is also a must see as well... Safe Travels *Greg*

    Before the walk in Acropolis he literally went through the worst & most dangerous neighborhoods of Athens, thus not serving justice to the city. Of course this is only 1/200 of Athens. For a man that has been there so many times I'd expect him to follow a different route to Parthenon. But the saddest thing is some guys in the comments judging a city by a sole video. Fortunately most people know that Greece is one of the most beautiful and friendly places on earth..

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I followed this route to the Parthenon because it was the most direct way to get there from my hotel...and because I was curious to see what the neighborhood was like. I thought it was pretty interesting exploring myself.
