I believe the main attractions of a city is the simple things in everyday life! Like this video of yours shows right here! So I don't understand when people ask from you to show the "real"attractions , I mean those you can find them easily to some other video. But nobody really makes a vlog about the real life on the streets, you know? So thank you again for taking the time to make these videos!

The center of Athens near Omonoia square is not just sketchy. It is a ghetto due to illegal migration. It is not greek anymore. Syntagma square though is still greek and the rest of Athens too. Try the Athenian riviera and the southern suburbs for a better view.

Same with many parts of Paris, London or any other big European city which is no longer european since local population was replaced by new incomers from other continents the past few decades and they are creating exactly same sketchy areas they left from.

Thank you for this tour of Athens. This is a beautiful city and I always take pleasure in watching videos including yours. I would recommend the following places to visit in Athens: The squares of Omonia and Syntagma, the hill of Lycabettus, the area of Kilonaki located on the slopes is one of the most elite one of Athens. Kifissia is a northern equivalent of Kolonaki, the Athens Central Market, the area of Plaka with its old houses, cafes and restaurants, the Athens Riviera. Just 10 kilometres from Syntagma square, the Athens Riviera begins and streches to the southermost point of Attica peninsula, to Cape Sunio. The area of Glyfada is considered the ''Greek Miami''. Among the museums, it is worth visiting National Archeological Museums, Museum of Cycladic Art, the Benaki Museum about the Role of the Greeks in the world.

There is a really cool neighborhood with lots of restaurants near there and there's one place in particular you should visit. The Little Kook Cafe. We came across it at night and it was truly magical and then went back to explore it and have a bite to eat in the daytime. Both day and night are worth filming.

Hi Gabriel, here’s a list of some lesser known/less visited places in and around Athens. Apologies for the long text, didn't have the time to curtail it 😛:
    1. Ancient greek technology museum on Pindarou street. It's interactive and has a lot of inventions, musical instruments, there''s a lot of reaserch done on this. That area (Kolonaki) has a lot of interesting buildings, alleys and many stairs.
2.Dexameni square in Kolonaki, you can visit the ancient reservoir of Hadrian.
    3. One Kleomenous street, just off Dexameni and towards the funicular that goes up Lycavittos is also a really interesting contemporary building with a unique façade made of layered sheets of marble.
    4. The archaeological site of Aristotle’s Lyceum is downhill from there, passed the Cycladic art museum, behind the Officer’s clubhouse and the Byzantine Museum. In that area, the war museum and the national gallery are worth a visit, the latter was recently reopened after undergoing extension and rennovation works.
    5. The shrine to the goddess of luck, Tyche, on the hill of Adrittos, next to Kallimarmaro stadium (the bottom section of one column remains, but great view to the stadium from there).
    6. The Ancient Sanctuary of Pan is just down from there, next to the church of St. Photine at Ilissos. Walk up Anapafseos street from there & you reach the 1st cemetary of Athens, also worth a visit, with a lot of monuments and mausolea, like the one of the archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, who uncovered Troy. His mausoleum is like an ancient temple, with scenes of the trojan war all around.
    7. There'a very well preserved Mycenean tholos tomb from the 13th century B.C. in Acharnes, the birthplace of Aristophanes, the ancient greek comedic playwright. (9km north of Omonoia Square).
    8. Ymittos mountain:
The Kaissariani monastery (ca.1100A.D. but Aphrodite’s temple used to be there) on Ymittos mountain, only 6,5km from Syntagma square worth a visit, in a lush forested area. You could combine the visit with first a visit to the national sculpture gallery first near the Katechaki metro stat
Ymittos has other interesting monasteries like Moni Asteriou and caves like the Koutouki -Paiania cave.
Aixoni Sculpted Theater is awesome, an old quarry of which was turned into an open air piece of art/theatre by the very notable landscape sculptor Nella Golanda.
    8. 7km south of Syntagma square is Phaleron (Faliro) the port that was used by ancient Athenians prior to Piraeus. The nautical park there has a floating museum, the Averof armoured cruiser which took part in WW1 through to WW2. There is also a full-scale functioning trireme (ancient greek warship) called Olympias, which is commissioned in the Greek navy. Nereby is the planetarium, Renzo Piano’s Opera and library, the air force museum, a museum of toys and a couple of nice parks. The west side of the bay is also a charming little walk to Pireus, from the Neo Faliro metro station, past the church of Mirtidiotissa down to Mikrolimano and even further to Zea. Pireus has an archeological museum and a maritime museum down that side.
    9. Mount Parnitha: You can take the cable car to get a great view of the whole basin, there are deer to be seen, monasteries caves, trails…
    10. South coast: Many beaches, all the way down to cape Sounio, where the temple of Poseidon is: Alykes Anavyssou is a really big one, so there’s always space, see the unique frescoes in the chapel of Virgin Katafygiotissa, in Thymari, painted by a renowned Greek artist, Mytaras. The 4th beach of Legrena is nice, too, as is the one under the temple of Poseidon.
    11. Westbound towards Loutraki: A nice place to eat and swim is in lake Vouliagmeni of Korinthia, north of Loutraki (not to be confused with the lake Vouliagmeni in Athens, though that is nice too). Further north you can swim at the archeological site of Heraion of Perachora and also at Mylokopi, two really nice bays, you’ll mostly have them to yourself.

@Ryan Affleck What, LOL, no. The centre of the city is literally inhabited by non-Greeks, except the district of Kolonaki. Plus, the centre of the city gathers about 700.000 people. All of Athens has approximately 5 million. And needless to say, the remaining 4.3 million live in the suburbs of the metropolitan area.

It's a shame you missed the "actual" flea market (at least on the video, anyway), which was to the right of the street you walked down. It's a proper flea market in the sense of having stalls and small shops selling antiques and bric-a-brac, I loved spending time browsing around there looking for an interesting souvenir to take home when I was there last November. I found a couple of things of interest, but the stallholders were tough nuts to crack when it came to bargaining (a lot tougher than in Morocco), and I came away with nothing!
Personally I loved Athens, especially Plaka, and the little hidden area that has whitewashed houses built on a hill, it's reminiscent of the islands. I did have trouble finding it though, until a friendly local took me there. They're right when they say it's hidden! 😊

When I was in Athens recently I stayed in Omonia , I arrived there fairly late at night from the Athens International airport by train as I was walking through the gates at railway station with my luggage , the security officer asked where I was going and he kindly said he would walk with me to my hotel which I thought was unusual for someone working at a railway station ,
The hotel , I stay at was a very good quality hotel at a reasonable price , during my stay in Omonia , I went out one night to have my dinner when walking down the laneways of Omonia , two young men approached me , they didn't look Greek so I am not sure of their origin , they pushed my against a wall and held me while they robbed me , my wallet was hard to get out because my pockets were locked with safety pins to defer pickpockets .
My experience of Athens is that there a lots of friendly and helpful there but be very careful of people who can rob you in the streets .

I am so sorry for what happened to you. Omonia, is not the safest area in Athens. In Omonia you will mostly see foreigners not Greeks (Pakistan people for example). It is also a not very clean area. I used to work to an area close to Omonia called Platia Victorias (Victoria square) and it is maybe the worst area in Athens. You guys who travel to Athens need to be careful especially with your personal belongings!

I love your videos, raw and simple..great work.
I would like to comment on this video though because I know every corner of your walk since I was borned and lived in Athens for 29 years.
I'm living in the United States for 7 years now (mostly in big Cities like Chicago) and people here most of the times say they didn't like Athens. If you ask them how many days they spend in Athens most they will say 1 day or 1 night since Athens is the Hub by port or airport to go to the islands. With that being said, Athens is one of the most historic and cultural cities in the world. It's a Huge city with more than 4 million people and many different suburbs. Just to get a taste of Athens I would say you need 1 Week to 10 days so you can feel the vibe and getting in love with this city and all the hidden gems can offer..this video yes it's downtown close to Monastiraki and Acropolis entrance but I believe it's not a representation of Athens . Definitely you need to come back and give a good week and show the world everything you experienced..❤️

Just an advice Gabe for another very interesting area of Athens for your next trip to Greece. I'm pretty sure you will come to Greece again.
Google the area of the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Centre with the Flisvos Marina and the Hellenikon Urban Project at the coast there

  • @Pan472
    @Pan472 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I suggest you visit:
Kifissia, Marousi (accessible from the centre through line 1 of the metro), Psychiko, Philothei, Penteli, Vrilissia, Ekali, Nea Erithraia etc. These are the north-northeastern suburbs of Athens. Very affluent areas, mostly very clean and a lot of green, especially Psychiko, Ekali and Kifissia.
Then, I would suggest Kallithea, which has the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, which is a major park with the new facilities for the national library and opera, then Palaio Faliro, which has the Flisvos Park, Alimos, Kalamaki, Elliniko, in which a gargantuan park is now built there, and an exposition centre has opened there, and then Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza. All these are the southern suburbs, along the sea front.
Then in Piraeus, I highly recommend Kastella and the Zeus and Mikrolimano marinas. They are splendid, with lots of cafes and restaurants, especially in Kastella, which has very old architectural elements.
Lastly, from the northwest visit the suburb of Nea Philadelphia, which has a very nice park.

Hey Gabriel, have not been to Athens yet but it is on my bucket list. You mentioned possibly doing a video on Athens and I would like to give my opinion on it. I think you do one video of the historical things and one on the murals and other art of the city. I wouldn't include the tagging because thats just some low life pissing on the wall. I might suggest a food video too. I would think you could find some very tasty stuff in Athens.
I am really enjoying this series. I have to go to Greece either this year or next. Do it before in get to the point that I can't do it.

Hey Gabriel! If you want to see differenet and interesting parts of our once glourios city I suggest:
    - Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre, a great modern place with open space, a canal, great view of the see marine and in summer a bunch of concerts nearby
    - Kastella, a neighbourhood upon a hill in Pireus, with nice old buildings and view of Mikrolimano and the islands of the Saronic Gulf.
    - Mets/Pagrati, an area with cozy buildings and nice bars behind the Panathinaiko Stadium, which held the first Modern Olympics
-Exarchia, an area close to the centre that has a lot of interesting street-art, cheap bars and autonomous-antifa influence
-Kifissia a rich suburb of Athens with a lot of Green and really nice neoclassical builidngs
    - And since u love exploring, go to the Olympic centre to see many new expensive facilities being wasted and scattered in just 15 years.
If you want to check museums visit the National Archaelogical (by far the most important one in Greece, though badly preserved), Pinakothiki (recently renovated), Kerameikos museum (underrated) and Goulandri art museum.
