    This wasn't the last of my exploring for the day. After leaving Loutra I decided that I had to investigate the mysterious castle, which I knew nothing about. It ended up being an amazing hike and journey through history. I made a separate video about that, which you can watch here: th-cam.com/video/fTY42cirQ88/w-d-xo.html

    The Ionian islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakinthos etc) receive approx. 1000mm annually.

    Kythnos is well known, and great for a couple of days, however it's very close to Serifos and people more often than not prefer to go to the latter!

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Why do you think Serifos is preferable? I visited there in 2009 but I think for only one night. It was in October and raining so I didn't really experience the island.

      @@GabrielTravelerVideosI haven't been for some years... but it's has a lot of returning summer holiday goers. It has many really nice big sandy beaches, a lot more than Kythnos, and quiet. (Many roads are not tarmac...) Great local food too. It's laid back but not dead. The port has a couple of nice beaches too, the main Chora is high up, is authentic island vibe and has a great view down towards Megalo Livadi. It's known in Greek mythology as the island of the Cyclops, Perseus (the demi-God that killed Medusa) and for its iron mines. Sifnos is also great, though very few beaches but so well looked after, beautiful villages and so easy to get around as the roads are quite good. Great food too. These two are some of my favourite islands, together with Kythira & Elafonissos, Ikaria (especially the northeast), Naxos, Milos. Andros (1 hour on the boat from Rafina) is very nice too, but it's big, mountainous and requires a lot of driving around. The island I'm considering to visit soon is Skyros.

    Why does everyone love Greece?
    I am Brazilian, but every time I hear about Greece I feel my heart beat faster.
    Is it because it is the birthplace of our civilization?
    Is it the sensation that Socrates and Aristotle, Leonidas and Alexander once walked on this land?
    is it its blue skies and its crystal clear waters?
    I think it is the beauty of simplicity so as to degrade the material in order to elevate the spirit.
    This is what Greece teaches us.
    I don't know why, but deep inside I feel Greek.
    Thank you Gab for your wonderful videos and may God bless you.

    Thanks Gabriel for another lovely video! I've travelled to 28 countries so far and always ask myself the same question when I return back to the UK: Would I like to live permanently here once I retire? And so far the only country that makes me say yes is Greece. There's just something about this place which I can't really describe with a few words in a comment. I don't know if it's the people, the landscapes, the magnetic field or the air.
    If you visit mainland Greece like the villages of Epirus, the Peloponnese or the old towns of Xanthi and Kavala in northern Greece you will understand what I mean.

    The reason a lot of these islands are not that popular is because of the over commercialized islands of Santorini and Mykonos. I find the green islands to be very pleasant. They are in the SPORADES. That is east of Volos, Skiathos, Skopelos and more.

    Lovely video once again, you make us mainlander Greeks jealous, now concerning Chora (χώρα) you mentioned in this video, chora is a common Island habitat system from medieval - byzantine times, back then due to pirate attacks they created the system of Chora which means a castle or a fortress on a top and around it a city and in the event of attack everyone runs in the castle. That's why you see choras in all the islands and that's why most towns are like a maze with narrow streets, to make pirates lives miserable. Hi Gabriel, Kythnos island seems like it was stripped of its trees and other green pastures possibly taken to other islands to feed other livestock somewhere else. Still a beautiful island with some very nice small beaches, just not a tourist island attraction.

      It's also mainly because a lot of the islands in the Aegean are very windy. They can't support many trees.

      Smelting metals like from the copper and other metals mined and refined there from ancient times - stripped the forests from surrounding islands and other lands far away. The wood could fire the refning and Nimrod or Zargon provided the examples for clearing forests for fuels. Ripping up roots too was not neglected. Erosion continues as our lovely grazing animals continued to munch so much that trees could not get a head start to rise above the eager tongues and bellies. The questions about how to be regenerative remain. Tony Rinaldo shows us all how Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration ( FMNR ) can bring back millions of hectares already. Alan Watson Featherstone has shown us for more than 3 decades how the Caladonian forests regrowth can provide a great community of life which includes us too.

    The 'shipwreck' looks like a barge to me... most probably they used it to transfer building materials for those houses at the seafront and later left there and sunk...

    • @pvdppvdp6638
      @pvdppvdp6638 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it is/was a barge that was used to transport ore. A lot of the mines on those islands (Kythnos, Serifos, ...) were at places that were not very accesible and often in remote places (near the coast). Therefore it was mostly loaded onto barges that (due to their low draft) could come very close to the coast. On some islands there are still remains of these loading places.
