Looking at the house foundation... My grandparents house had a similar layout on hill. House at top, then directly below the house a retaining wall to keep the piers from washing out. Then a garden/yard, and another retaining wall below that about 25 feet. looked very similar. The rock pile may be the house, or just the rockpile. My grandfather also had a rockpile where he "stored" rocks they picked up around the place. Gotta put em somewhere!!! They don't burn! I saw other posts where people mentioned there should be a place where they were dumping stuff. I would wager in the bottom of that draw. Looks like the trees were planted on purpose as a wind break for the house. They are oddly... in a row. Are they to the west of the old house? If so, they likely are. Their dump pile would be within dragging distance of the house, not uphill, and downwind from your normal wind direction. Imagine how far and where you would drag a bin of garbage, and dig a hole for burnin' and look in that area with your metal detector. Might be near the rock storage area. It wasn't always the crick for dumping, especially if they did not want to spoil the lake water.

@@markkeller1778 I’m the same but use a slightly different method for finding depth. We use a silver pocket watch on a chain, stand and hold out directly above source and watch will start to spin to the point it’s horizontal then repeat and count rotations till horizontal and that’s how far down you have to dig. Hope that all makes sense, I was amazed the first time I seen this as a young lad.
East Coast GS, my dad taught me and he used a Willow branch in the shape of a Y, put your thumbs on the end hold it parallel to the ground start walking and when the tail of the Y points down that's where the Vein of water is! Works like a charm. To tell the depth he used a piece of straight Willow about 5ft long, put the small end in the ground so the bigger end was over the Vein of water, it would 'bob' up and down for each foot of depth, then it would go horizontal a few times and start bobbing again, damnest thing I ever saw! But it always worked, he probably witched 200+ Wells and only missed 2 times. I can use the Y stick to find the water but haven't been successful at getting the depth, it's been 30 years or more since I have tried, I should try again.

I agree....here in Idaho people paint posts, rocks, or anything on the boundaries of their property with orange paint...means no trespassing and no hunting. Although, many people will allow you to hunt on their property if you ask...its the ones that go out of their way to do things without asking that ruins it for all those who do the right thing.
If you know where the out house 🏠 was start digging I guarantee you will find something 💯 if it hasn't been Caribbean already it a great family activity just shovel and gas line finder

I really admire your affection for the land. It’s cool how our roots, like those of the grass, are deep in the earth. I’m a Saskatchewan prairie dog lifer, sort of your neighbour to the North. Love the land.
Just finished a week long trip to Saskatchewan, found my great great great grandpas farm near Nakomis. Looked at one of the old land maps and even figured out the piece he had. Saskatchewan is a beautiful place, you’re lucky to be there!
Truly beautiful. I know my 2 cents is a bit late, but the old "foundation" seems to be a perfect place to "rebuild" or "resurrect" a living dwelling especially since it seems to be "higher ground ". May be important if a guy and his family are only going to be there once in a blue moon 🌙.
Looks like a great piece of land. A person could retire to a place like that and love waking up to a view over that pond/lake every morning. The Eveready piece of metal was an old flashlight...no idea how old. Some metal detecting and poking around would probably lead to some interesting finds. Really liking this and looking forward to more videos of the progress as you make it into what you want. I'm thinking you need to grab and old boat now to take out on the water for some fishing.
This video strongly reminds me of my childhood and my family house in Poland. Nostalgia and memories are just firing in guy's head. Sadly everything got lost due to financial crisis. I wish I could come back to those good times. Keep up the great work Derek!
As an 70/80's kid my grandad showed me the same trick for water veins... he was also the best meteorologist ever... even tho he was a postman... loll... old folks didn't need GPS wizardery
I think you're right about that draw, it's nice looking but you'd for sure have water/drainage/foundation issues in years where it's not dry as a bone.
That old farmstead was most likely a family that didn’t make it though the Great Depression. Back then something like 1/3 of the population was in farming and ranching, now it’s less than %2
Have you seen the crowbar, depth-witching technique? A friend and former co-worker who’s Dad had a plumbing business in that area showed it to me. It worked well for him but not so much for me. Two (both) forefingers under the neck of the crowbar, pick the end up a few inches off the ground and it will rotate. Count the 360 degree rotations for the water depth
A guy should go through some of the town archives and see if a guy can find some old picture photos of the ol place and builder back like you do on those ol goin to town rides🏡
My 14 year old son Jacob Riley Haataja passed away in March. I'm always at home. It's tough to work on my own projects now. I'd love to get away occasionally to distract myself with adventures with old iron
When my grandfather drilled the well for his house, he hit an underground spring. It was so strong that they didn't even need a water pump for 20 years. Then it was week so he installed a small pump. About 50 years later, the well was running a little dry so my dad and I set out to find the original well pipe and point. We had no idea, and we doused it, aka divined it, and marked the spot. Starting our diggin strait down, and Bob's your uncle we were right on top of the well cap! Still something science has zero explanation for.
PS…if you’re to busy to detect old home site…invite a metal detector channel TH-cam personality (such as NuggetNoggin) to do in for a collaborative filming episode opportunity. Just a suggestion. Thanks for sharing your channel.
This is what family is all about. Realizing what you got, sharing plans with current generation and putting on the gloves and making it happen. The kids will have memories of days like this their whole life. 🇺🇸
What an amazing piece of land! It's great to keep all that in the family. It's pretty incredible what kids find hidden all over like that. We recently had some concrete work done on our house that was built in the 1920s. Ever since my kids have been bringing me all kinds of stuff that they have found around where the crew was digging. Mostly pieces of old bottles and bricks but it really makes a guy wonder what the heck is all buried under there.
I grew up on sulphur water the well at my grandparents place had it the well was deep but it could be 100 degrees out in the middle of summer and the water would be ice cold. I guess drinking sulphur water is not for everyone and drinking too much can give a guy a upset stomach but what does not kill ya only makes ya stronger
I used that method to find underground water lines. Never to find water like that. I have never seen the washer trick to figure out depth. That's very cool.
I watched my Dad use the bouncing stick method of determining depth several times. He said each dip by the stick was one foot. I can’t say how accurate it was, but he swore by it.
@@mikeg6042 yep a lot of guys use willow or peach branches. I never tried switching water, but I can switch any ditch or place where dirt has been dug with two copper wires. When I come to the edge, the wires cross. Its accurate to within an inch or so. Blew my boss's mind when I was able to locate his septic tank using that method. He had just bought the place and needed it pumped.

Amazing seeing the amount of history in that little piece of land just from keeping it in the family and passing it down. My family were farmers for 150 years but never on the same land as 3 times that I know of they sold the farm for building land and then moved a bit further out as the city expanded. My Uncle sold up just a couple years back and they're building a whole bunch of 'luxury family housing' on that little piece of land and he was the last to sell up so I guess I'm not from a farming family any more. I learned to drive stick on my Uncle's back field and spent a ton of summers working on the property when my Dad rented some land off my uncle to run his business out of but the whole lot's gone now save a couple of glasshouses that look to still be standing on the old Google maps.
I'm going to be moving to North Dakota pretty soon to live in the town that my family originally homesteaded. My cousin up there has barns full of old classic cars maybe we can do some business at some point I he has anything you'd be interested in
It was fun to watch you fellers divining for water on your future recreation area. I watched my Grandpa and my Dad find water using similar methods when I was a boy back in the 1950’s and 1960’s. It was always interesting to hear people’s skepticism regarding divining but I watched them put in several wells using such techniques.I’ve tried it myself and was surprised to find I couldn’t stop the sticks from moving no matter how hard I tried. And yet I still don’t know if I believe it works.
it's just fake superstition, but is a fun little thing to entertain and show kids either way. You could dig into the water table nearly anywhere in a decently hydrated area and get water. Any little bit of unbalance holding those pieces of wire will make them turn, even if you subconsciously end up doing it, its kind of a play on the placebo effect.
Derek, I’m not sure how it is there, but where I live I believe you can build a house on any grandfathered foundation without a permit. It would be good to check out. Good luck and the land is beautiful. You and your family deserve it!!😁😁🇨🇦🇨🇦

My wife and I are currently looking for some land in ND to do Exactly what you are doing. We only live a few miles from you in MN so probably leaving the state for the same reason LOL.
As far as how long ago that house was knocked down, I can see that it was most definitely inhabited in the 1940s/50s, that all the shiny part that said Everready, what is actually the casing to an old metal flashlight that was most likely from the 1950s, and that rusty metal plate that would’ve went on the front door I would say dates to the 1920s, it originally would’ve been brass plated steel. Like I don’t wanna vintage and antique items, so I thought I would chime in on this.
We had those lock plates on the house I grew up in, which was built in the 1880’s. I agree with many others, it would be fun to run the metal detector around the original homestead.

I appreciate your different persona here; each channel has a slightly different Derek. Bravo.
derek, i'm sure i speak for your viewers when i say that we would never trespass on your land. we respect your ownership, your privacy and your family history. best to you and your wonderful family. a guy would be blessed to have you as a friend. keep yer sparkalator shining bright.
What an absolutely BEAUTIFUL view! Thanks for sharing some North Dakota with this Virginia feller.
Clearly becoming one of my favorite channels. What a gorgeous piece of land.
Thank you
If you know where the out house 🏠 was start digging I guarantee you will find something 💯 if it hasn't been Caribbean already it a great family activity just shovel and gas line finder
Really awesome to see a family piece of land stayin’ in the family
Pretty sure there’s no property tax in ND. As it should be
What a nice land your family and now you have have! Wow amazing! 👌
I can imagine rocking on the front porch and looking out over the water after the day is done....so quiet and peaceful. A wonderful place to raise a family!
With a well screened porch. That's a very large sqeeter hatchery they got there.
Love all your shows...grew up tinkering with anything that could be built. Stopped for years.....Back to building and restoring bikes. Making something considered to most as junk something special again. I enjoy all your dry humor. Nice job! Thanks for all your posts. Jesse
Hello from Regina, born and raised. 👋
@ Saskatonian-born, raised, and planted for life. Cheers!
That mini truck seems like something Puddin's Fab Shop might enjoy
How amazing just being on your family's land is so neat. I'm glad that you are taking us along with you on your adventures in developing your property
Coors light! I had you figured as a PBR guy. Nice piece of property
I think I’v seen PBR in the shop 😁
This video strongly reminds me of my childhood and my family house in Poland. Nostalgia and memories are just firing in guy's head. Sadly everything got lost due to financial crisis. I wish I could come back to those good times.
Keep up the great work Derek!
Same. 400 acres developing, subdividing, then 2008 housing bubble burst & other side of family wanted to hug all the trees & stop progress, my LIVING.
Nice peaceful plot out there :)
As an 70/80's kid my grandad showed me the same trick for water veins... he was also the best meteorologist ever... even tho he was a postman... loll... old folks didn't need GPS wizardery
that also works for water lines & under ground wires
I think you're right about that draw, it's nice looking but you'd for sure have water/drainage/foundation issues in years where it's not dry as a bone.
Great Lookin Homestead!
Well deserved Derek. I'm sure the past generations of the family are proud of what you're doing with yourself and the family traditions.
I learned witching the exact same way and I was just as dumbfounded at how it worked.
That old farmstead was most likely a family that didn’t make it though the Great Depression. Back then something like 1/3 of the population was in farming and ranching, now it’s less than %2
Yupp..
It’s absolutely beautiful there!!!!
A guy is happy for some guy, his wife and his gangly brood of vipers.
Moving all that dirt, tells me you need to dig into your yellow pages for Mr Dicky Dozer. Beautiful land. You’re all a lucky bunch, enjoy your life.
A guy should go through some of the town archives and see if a guy can find some old picture photos of the ol place and builder back like you do on those ol goin to town rides🏡
That draw there below the barn is natural drainage - you don't want to build there but I know you'll "do the right thing". LOL
Such amazingly beautiful land Derek! Glad it is owned by people that will love respect and nurture it!
Nice!
PS…if you’re to busy to detect old home site…invite a metal detector channel TH-cam personality (such as NuggetNoggin) to do in for a collaborative filming episode opportunity. Just a suggestion. Thanks for sharing your channel.
This is beautiful. I know winters suck but if it was me, I'd make this home base for Vice Grip Garage! Love this
This is what family is all about.
I always wanted to visit N.Dak. Hopefully I will someday (fully respecting the Bieri Compound property lines of course, only visiting if a guy invites him).
Imagine placing all those stones by hand and carriying them from who knows how far? Thanks for sharing! 👍🏻
Man, a feller would LOVE to camp at a place like that.. Vice grip Campground? I'd stay there. "At vice Grip Campground you can enjoy all the freedom and cold snacks a feller can ever want"
Loved seeing and knowing history of ND growing up in the south east corner of ND keep the great content coming 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Derek hi. You are so lucky to have that homestead property in ND. Here in NJ that would have been bought up by greedy developers and turned into townhouses or strip malls.I plan on getting out and getting a piece of land at some point soon.Good luck with your new un -car project!
"I didn't have a plan..." I'm starting to see a family theme here.
Chris must have had a Red Bull; I've never seen him so chatty.
Was thinking the same thing.
That shiny item your son found at 12:44 appears to be the squished body of a flashlight.
I guy gets excited when he sees vice grip anything in his notifications!
Amen.
Don't get me wrong but I like his channel too, I wouldn't really say I get excited, you must be single 🥃🥃🥃
Women get me excited but I do enjoy his channel so each to their own 🤘🤘🤘🥃🥃🥃

I use to live in Fargo.......this is the prettiest place I've ever seen!!!!! Keep the rocks and plant trees!. (Could you bulldoze Fargo while you're at it?)
Those TeePee Rings could be confused with Medicine Wheels so you have to bring back your sacred ceremonial lands and have a Sundance and a Pow Wow and Invite all nations to the Traditional Territory to Bless your Land to teach your children Love and Joy.
Derek you and your family are so Blessed 🙌
This sweet family , so sweet , beautiful, where can you go watch clean TV , Family , 66 years young , Like the Walton’s love this family , God and Family . God Bless you All
The old Knorr place has a family cemetery too, just up the hill from those trees just west of where Chris graded that land.
They need to watch out putting a house on a burial grounds and their was Indians there before.

Why? Out of respect I can see it but not because of anything else.
Don't give the devil power.

God bless you and yours, it's nice to see hard working families realizing their dreams and happy. Thank you for sharing so much of your life with us.
You and your family deserve it!!😁😁🇨🇦🇨🇦
That’s awesome, congratulations to you and your family on the new place enjoy it looks like you got ample supply of underwater aquifers and probably a bunch of springs underneath your laying there and everything very cool.
Have you thought about going off grid with the power supply, solar panels and things of that nature. If so and you haven’t come across his channel I highly recommend you watching red poppy ranch he has a very good set up an off grid power supply and he’s got hooked up to a big garage his house his whole family lives in it anyways have a good night
Looks like a nice retreat
Always love the VGG & VGL content. Can't wait to see the progress on the land as well as cool finds along the way.
That lock plate were used from the 1800's up to the 30s and even the 40s
I have lock plates just like that on my doors. House was built in the 1920s
We had those lock plates on the house I grew up in, which was built in the 1880’s. I agree with many others, it would be fun to run the metal detector around the original homestead.
BENTLEY has the coolest name ever!!! Wish I had thought of that one. I tryed to name my daughter Holley but her momma said you are not naming her after a carburator!! Lol..
Watching from the UK I can’t believe how much space you guys have got!! Would love to own that. Love new channel!
You should put the trailer on the slab where the old barn and house used to be. Very nice spot!
