      @@markkeller1778 I’m the same but use a slightly different method for finding depth. We use a silver pocket watch on a chain, stand and hold out directly above source and watch will start to spin to the point it’s horizontal then repeat and count rotations till horizontal and that’s how far down you have to dig. Hope that all makes sense, I was amazed the first time I seen this as a young lad.

    • @chrisbrown4570

      East Coast GS, my dad taught me and he used a Willow branch in the shape of a Y, put your thumbs on the end hold it parallel to the ground start walking and when the tail of the Y points down that's where the Vein of water is! Works like a charm. To tell the depth he used a piece of straight Willow about 5ft long, put the small end in the ground so the bigger end was over the Vein of water, it would 'bob' up and down for each foot of depth, then it would go horizontal a few times and start bobbing again, damnest thing I ever saw! But it always worked, he probably witched 200+ Wells and only missed 2 times. I can use the Y stick to find the water but haven't been successful at getting the depth, it's been 30 years or more since I have tried, I should try again.

    Amazing seeing the amount of history in that little piece of land just from keeping it in the family and passing it down. My family were farmers for 150 years but never on the same land as 3 times that I know of they sold the farm for building land and then moved a bit further out as the city expanded. My Uncle sold up just a couple years back and they're building a whole bunch of 'luxury family housing' on that little piece of land and he was the last to sell up so I guess I'm not from a farming family any more. I learned to drive stick on my Uncle's back field and spent a ton of summers working on the property when my Dad rented some land off my uncle to run his business out of but the whole lot's gone now save a couple of glasshouses that look to still be standing on the old Google maps.

    @darkwood777 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In the old days when homesteaders came from Europe, the horse stable was often connected directly to one end of the house. This is similar to how homes today have attached garages. This can explain why the house footprint seems to be too large. You can identify the house usually by finding hearth stones. There should also be remnants of the chimney there, but if the house was bulldozed, evidence of the chimney is likely to be gone, although the hearthstones may remain if the rest of the foundation is there. Hearth stones may not be along the wall, but located inside the walls at the center of the house so that rooms on all sides could keep heated in the winter.

      I think we are looking on the brighter side if things, illnesses where more common, and the medicine to treat them was rare. The reason they appeal to us now is that compared to what life is for more humans now, it is free of the modern stresses. You may stress about work and your commute and impressing your boss for that bonus, while back then you worried for your livestock, the weather, your crops, and your family's health. The risks where more, and the stresses made you appreciate life more. Nowadays the stresses aren't worth what we are given for them. Money doesn't mean shit if life sucks when you have it

    On our old farm he had a gigantic rock pile. As we cleaned up the fields each year from the rocks after plowing, they were added to the rock pile. But this farmer may have done was to build stone fences with the stones or put them into the foundation.

    The old rock Foundation could have been the original house and then the cement Foundation behind it could have been an add-on to the original old house cement block by the well was probably for holding an old hit-and-miss style engine with a water pump attached to it and or for a generator for electricity

    Any animals holes make a great way to survey what’s under the ground. Acts like a bore hole and they deposit the waste right next to the hole for you.

    Please, revive the Courier. And save it for one of the boy's first car. Really, only 2 people can fit in the cab, less distractions. Safe to be a first time car.

    You know that you can witch pipes that are underground also, I have done it, my father showed me how to do it, as well as water with a forked willow branch,and tig wire works great for witching the way y'all did it. Never saw the washer trick though.
    It's amazing how much Shtuff we've forgotten about or everyday stuff our grandparents and parents knew about and didn't have the time or it was "secret"stuff ,magic. I don't know.
    I'd like to try that washer trick here in the Mojave desert, as I am tired of hauling H2O,..
    God bless you and your loved ones
    stay safe and happy
    Godspeed
