He was nothing even remotely close to being ANYTHING like Bowie!!!! Hey, sometimes we can't help who we love. But Bowie, I got Scary Monsters when I was 13 years old. My cool uncle gave it to me and I played it day and night on my record player/stereo. At the time i was listening most likely to what my very young step-mom listened to in the early eighties. Carol King, Cat Stevens, Bread and stuff from the seventies. Before that it was 6-8 grade R&R Van Halen Diver Down, Rush, Pink Floyd The Wall, Led Zeppelin that brown album you put water on and it went to color... stuff my sister listened to. Before that, My fifth grade favorite The Bee Gees' SGT. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band (the Beatles' Covers,) Donna Summers and other disco. So David Bowie was very new and different. He changed my life. I became different, individualized myself and cherished that suddenly I realized how regular everyone else was. I LONGED TO BE STRANGE and after I heard earlier stuff I got it all little by little! I never went much Beyond Scary MOnsters. I loved his old stuff and vowed not to go forward. I didn't like one song of new stuff and i'd ignore the whole album. Black Star esp. the video scares the shit out of me. Should I now venture north of 1980? At least I can take one more step toward my decision and begin grieving my loss of my VERY favorite musician EVER. We'll pick lilacs for this passing time
My death waits there in our double bed
Sails of oblivion at my head
Pull up the sheets against the passing time
But what ever lies behind the door
