I am from a very poor family in Brazil and the only contact with classical music was with one uncle loving Beethoven and only listen it. But in 1985 I came to live in Sweden and I discovered J.S.BACH and I found me in paradise. I can listen Bach from morning to night 365 days by year.And every time I listen one piece I discover new facets because his music is so complete. Some pieces set me in total transes. Wonderful.

Sounds of my childhood hanging out with my grandfather in his study, he sat in his huge armchair while he read his Bible and I would sit at his feet and listen to his records. Every time I hear Bach I think of him, I miss him with all my heart.
And it would appear you will see your grandfather again if you follow in his footsteps, bow to the Lord, and trust in Christ. Praise the Lord for the peace of Bach's music in uncertain times. but the greatest peace is found in Jesus (John 20:19-21).

up until I was 13 (am now 71) I loved the pop music of the day, then my father took me to hear Handel's Messiah and from that moment on it has only been classical and religious music. it was the only gift he gave me but it has proved to have been worth more than all the gold and silver in the world
For me, it was my Mum taking me to see Madame Butterfly at the Empire in Liverpool - also, when I was 13 (and I am 72 - well next (soon) birthday!). It was beyond gold and silver for what it brought me to. I came across Bach very late, but I believe that it was always going to happen, after becoming familiar with orchestral classical music by degrees. Thank you to my Mum. I've never written this before. Thank you Mum.

David Gunn - Thank you for sharing that. I just turned 68 yesterday. I was exposed to classical music when my grade school class went on a field trip to hear Leonard Bernstein. In junior high and high school I played in the band and orchestra, but we generally did not play classics, we played the musicals and current pop music, and band music for marching band. However, I did not get a proper education in composing, even though I had a passion for music. I was late getting into the "pop" music, but when I did around 1972, I was hijacked by that hard rock and metal, things that are now called "classic" rock. I left that behind many years ago and turned to ambient and electronic music, ( space music ). I came here today to listen to Bach, because I am also listening to an Audible Books title about the Great Composers. Mr. Gunn, I do hope you are doing well, and by the way, my name is also David.
I read an interview with a concert pianist, who in addition to loving classical composers such as Rachmaninoff, also appreciated the raw energy of heavy metal.

The first piece of classical music I was exposed to was Beethoven's symphony no. 6 that my mother would play almost daily . After noticing that I preferred classical music to any other, my father bought me a CD of a selection of Bach's music. The first piece on it was the Chaconne performed by orchestra conducted by Stokowski. I remember the experience as almost religious in its pathos, and being incredibly moved to the point of shedding tears. From then on, despite my love for Beethoven and, later, Mozart, it was Bach alone that wrote the music that described the harmony of the universe for me.

Thank you for sharing. Similar to you I was first exposed through Beethoven, except it was Symphony 5 in my dad's car when I was 5. My dad had an Electric Light Orchestra CD and one of the songs on it was a cover of "Roll Over Beethoven"(ironic I know) by Chuck Berry. On this version a string quartet performs a rendition of the iconic opening of the 1st movement...and then the electric guitar comes in(of course)! Those first 25 seconds just absolutely amazed me despite being so young. I would rewind to the beginning over and over! My dad was so fed up after 3 years that he finally got me a CD box set of Beethoven's Symphonies! It really was destined to be! Therefore I am forever indebted to Beethoven and his Symphony 6 is my absolute favorite piece, but I have become increasingly fond of Bach's music over the years. I wish you well.

I first came by Bach as a 14 year old when I purchased a cassette from Walmart called "Bach's Greatest Hits." Later, when I started driving the music would be blaring from my car! While others were blaring OZZY or Quiet Riot I was rocking out Bach.

The Brandenburg Concertos were the forever poor JS Bach's applications for work to a musical minded Prince who couldn't read music, so he shrugged and forgot about them. The music required more musicians than he employed, and therefore he never knew greatness was in his presence. He filled the Concertos into a desk drawer. And there they sat buried for over 100 years, when the never played Brandenburg Concertos were discovered. Felix Mendelssohn championed a rediscovery of the music of JS Bach, forgetting about his own. There was so much of Bach's great music for people to hear. Greater than he. Thank you, Felix. Love your Midsummer Night's Dream.
John Stuerke. Thank you for your interesting and informative comment. Sad that the Brandenburg Concertos were not performed in Bach's own time. Not for the Prince who failed to recognise Bach's genius, but the consequence of that Prince's rejection was that Bach's contemporaries never had the chance to hear and enjoy this marvellous music. And what a great service Felix Mendelsson rendered to mankind by championing a rediscovery of Bach's music.
Note Mother Hildegarde in Outlander, when Jamie Fraser askes her to help decifer a code written in musical notes. She recognises music by Bach and comments that he will never be remembered. Season 2 when the Frasers are in Paris trying to stop the Jacobean rebellion
Mendelssohn kicked off the Bach renaissance in 1829 with his two performances in Leipzig and Berlin which reportedly caused tumultuous scenes. It was a revelation. Afterwards Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms regularly met to study and play Bach in private.
Mendelssohn's statue is opposite to that of Bach on Leipzig market square. He is still standing there keeping an eye on Bach. The world owes a lot to him!💖
Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to return to Bach's time and present the maestro with a recording of these works specifically this recording, especially knowing that he never had the opportunity to hear them performed ....clearly his workload and circumstances did not sadly permit this during his relatively long and prodigious life....entirely a flight of fancy of course as time travel is not possible...at least according to Herr Einstein and contemporary scientific wisdom .. .but I had a very precious birthday gift of these works on my 14 th birthday, a gift that has given me life long pleasure (I'm 62 now btw)... I wonder what he would make of them and the knowledge that some 400 yrs or so later they are so well loved and appreciated the world over ? 🙂
Granddaughter and Me..Each visit she'd say you know which Grandpa..We lay on the bed she'd reach touch my hand..'don't want this to ever end,grandpa'...she's now 15..and has not ever ended..Her visits not as frequent as when a child she be. She plays the flute, practices her favorite Adagio,puts flute down,moves in time with the music..a picture of wonder..which I hope never ends..

Anytime I need grounding, this is my go-to music. I've used it for this all my life. (Mom loved and played classical music all the time.) And the good news is, it always delivers the grounding. In an uncertain world, it's refreshing to have something you can count on in a pinch.
You're so right! That's what is so special to Bach. Mozart and particularly Beethoven might excel at music that expresses the soaring highs and crushing lows of the human condition, music that moves like none other but might lack grounding.
In Bach, however, you can sense that he was very religious and that the continuity and stability his faith presumably provided him with has thoroughly transpired into his music. His music in turn is providing the listener with these balancing qualities.
In being hardly ever overwhelmingly passionate it takes away those highs and lows that one might get from hearing other composers. And in doing so it makes us feel safe and overall just happy without making us ecstatic. A great cure for our stressed out human souls. ❤🩹

I listened to these as a little kid, and I’m now studying classical music. But I don’t normally gravitate towards Bach. I was on the border of having a horrible anxiety attack when I had the sudden urge to listen to this. In a moment of absolute panic, this calmed me down.
I never realized how much I could miss a piece of music until that moment. There’s something so majestic and beautiful about it.
Bach means "brook". It's flow of life, good for the soul.

I had heard this concerto in early 1960's when my mother was alive and my three brothers and a sister could tuck in their bed every night with unblemished pure dream. After fifty some years passed , this beautiful music brings me back to then and letting me enshrine old memories once again in a new ditch.
This music is immortal and keeps your memories and beloved ones immortal, too!
We are blessed to witness such beauty like Bach´s music.

I discovered Bach (and classical in general) during my 2nd year in university. The campus book store had some classical tapes at 50% off. I had just bought a new boom box portable stereo and on impulse I bought some tapes. Bach is my favourite composer and Brandenburg is my #1 music. On my bucket list is to learn to play an instrument, a woodwind, specifically the recorder, and learn to play some of these Bach masterpieces.

The most complete musician ever I think. Instrumental music, cantatas- sacred and profane- solo instrumental works, concerti, and three of the most towering artistic achievement of western culture- St John Passion, St Mathew Passion, B minor mass. I do not follow any religion but these works speak beyond man made institutions.

Amazing to think Bach never heard these in his lifetime, but like them he is immortal.
I'd argue that he indeed heard them, although never having had heard them performed.
This music makes me so calm and happy. My parents always listen to this when I was little. Didnt understand and liked it much then, but now Im greatfull that they showed me real beauty.. ❤

I like all the albums you listed by the way, except for Lateralus (just never got into Tool) and Trout Mask Replica (I remember buying it in 2008. Still don’t like it, but «Safe As Milk» is a good record of his). But no group or artist comes well out of it by compare with Bach, imo.

Bach is the only human that mastered reaching the perfect universal formula in music, which you only see in nature itself.
No wonder so many people describe his music as a mirror of natural processes, of the universe, they hear God / divinity in it, etc.
I remember that movie "The day the earth stood still", starring Keanu Reeves, in which an alien super being came here to destroy humanity in order to save earth.
And by coincidence he hears the first part of the Goldberg variations... which awakens the first doubts in his originally destructive plans.
The guy who wrote the movie script - at some point in his life - obviously tasted from the immortal wisdom in Bach´s music.
What a privilege to live in times & countries where we can listen to this incredible music.

I finally understand why the Baroque composers loved the harpsichord and strings, they are the perfect mediums to express polyrhythm and syncopation. Bach is truly the essence of musical theory in application, and the Brandenburg Concertos are his Magnum Opi.

Now, Bach is a towering genius, whether I like the harpsichord or not. (I’m actually very glad they invented the pianoforte.)
Well, it was either that or the organ. The piano did not come along until the industrial revolution was underway in the late 1700s. Totally different method of sound production: the piano hammer strikes strings- 1 to 3 per key- and the harpsichord plucks a string.

Let's put them into context and we can be more amazed than ever! Pull any other composition created prior to 1720 and nothing comes even close in grandeur and skill, these are monuments of art! His concertos may have been received both with praise and resistance from some circles. The violin solos on #4 have no precedent, and #5 may be considered the first true keyboard concerto. I am so glad these 6 jewels survived oblivion!

This music was delivered 300 years ago and it’s still one of the best
40 years ago we played the 3rd one with only 1 viola and 1 cello...the others didn't make it to the concert due traffic accident....I played the viola and had all three parts in front of me with a road map where to jump from one part to another. The cembalist told the audience we found a manuscript from Wieblingen library (which doesn't exist at all) where were only 1 viola and 1 cello, and we now play the world premier of it. Next morning it was in the local newspaper...
It is true the classical music is a heavenly music....That is why it is marvellous and amazingly Beautiful.

I think that the Brandenburg Concertos are the epitome of the Baroque style. They're elegant, yet logical, enjoyable, yet intellectual. I personally wouldn't describe them as "concertos", because as we know the form today, they don't particularly fit it. Despite having some soloists (notice how I used the plural), it can't be compared to that of, say, Mozart's piano concertos, or Vivaldi's violin concertos. I've listened to these works in full about 79 times now, and I thoroughly enjoyed every one of them. Considering that they lay gathering dust in an archive for over 100 years, their popularity has spiked incredibly. My favourites (plural again) would have to be nos. 3 and 5. The former is very interesting, not just because of its instantly recognisable opening movement, but because of the second one. It's extremely short, and is more of a cadenza than an individual movement, and it's quite fun to listen to different people's takes on it. In some recordings (usually the historically informed ones), they embellish it, adding (sometimes excessive) ornamentation, whereas earlier modern recordings play it how it was written: a series of changing chords and harmonies. The latter I just love because of the inclusion of the flute, by far one of my favourite instruments. The flute wasn't a very popular instrument in Germany during the 17th and 18th centuries, so Bach didn't use it very often, but when he did, he did it magnificently. The flute was primarily an Italian instrument, often used by, among others, Antonio Vivaldi. George Frideric Handel wrote a set of sonatas for flute (or recorder, this has been widely disputed) and basso continuo. As I just mentioned, the scoring of flute or recorder in these sonatas has been disputed for...a while. In the 18th century, a term was used - "flautino" - to represent the recorder in scores. But musicologists have stated that they've discovered that the piccolo - essentially a smaller, higher-pitched flute - would fit more into the name of "flautino". Anyway, we went from Bach to Vivaldi, to Handel, to recorders, and I'm just now realising how long this comment is.....
This is just how I (personally) like to hear Bach. Elegant simplicity, light but clear and the parts really talk to each other. So glad that I found this. Thanks Brian for posting - I fav'd it!……Hᴜɢʜ….ツ
HughFromAlice Yes, agreed, nothing extra is added in this performance -- just appreciation for the dialogue in the music. For this category of Bach's music, the non-intrusive nature is part of the profundity (if I may). I believe this was intended either as background music for court gatherings, or possibly for "light" listening. Let's just say, the BEST of light listening.
+PlanetThoughts 1 of 2: This dialogue, between you and HughFromAlice, has me asking myself if this confirms what I was already suspicious about; there's always been this inherent stuffiness that seems to be present in any music made during such colonial times, as if the artists within the composers from that period were all confined; confined from expressing something beyond a passing muse that merely complimented the oppressive royal structures already in place back then. If that's the case, it's a shame, really. There is SO much craft involved in this music, to the extent that it deserves to be delivered under only the most integral of artistic intentions. (Not as mere "background music".)
+PlanetThoughts 2 of 2: That's why I like some early-'70s prog; while it adopted the rebelliousness inherent to "rock & roll", it reflected musicians' interest in taking the next step, and properly utilizing such fine crafts. Even if they weren't always up to par with Bach per se, they at least had the right idea. Then the corporates took over, and we were back to separating artistic integrity (punk rock, new wave, etc.) from well-crafted music (orchestral, jazz, etc.)

Monica Huggett on the violin on #6....she's the force behind the Portland Baroque Orchestra, and I'm fortunate enough to occasionally hear her live. Amazing talent, and a really nice lady too!
One day back around just past the mid 1980's I walked into a public library, saw a section of CD's and music booths to play them in. I decided to randomly pick a classical disk to see what it sounded like since I had not experienced the newest technology yet and wanted to add to my vast musical tastes of listening in rock, rap, new wave, folk, jazz and other. On went the headphones and I was blown away by the sound and clarity. I was extra blown away by this set of music the Brandenburg Concertos. What are the odds of picking this set out of the dozens and dozens of disks they had at the time? Just the odds of seeing this section of music in a back corner of the library which by the way is a pretty big library, I'd say it was meant to be. I had not gone there particularly to listen to music, but it hooked me further into classical music and I see this particular set as somewhat way ahead of it's time. Another moment, period of someone who pushed the boundaries in another artistic genre that furthered the human condition just a little more just hundreds of years ago. This is what art is, this is what it does and I am grateful to have come across it some 35 years ago that day in the library.
