Well wow that sounds incredible! Good for you! Congrats on a long and happy marriage! Don’t see that often anymore and I admire you both for that! Wishing you many more years of happiness together!
This drink is amazing! I copied you exactly to the point of even finding 5.5oz coup glasses, found them at crate and barrel for $4.95 each. I love an old fashioned and this hunter drink is similar yet different. It has the hint of orange from the orange bitters, but the cherry liquors in this pull out that cherry note just enough to set it apart from an old fashioned. Super nice for a change of pace. I think this is my new bourbon cocktail. Thanks for doing things like this!!!!
The Hunter was re-popularized by Hidetsugu Ueno of Bar High Five in Tokyo. He told me the story when he served me my very first Hunter (and my last drink in Tokyo to date) back in 2014. An Japanese bar industry magazine came to the primary Ginza bartenders to ask for their "favorite nitecap cocktail." By the time they got to Ueno-san, he assumed that the other bartenders had all provided their own tweaks on the Manhattan (and he was right), so he decided to help out the article's author (who was panicking a bit) by providing something more novel with a Hunter (which is actually a forgotten classic). Ueno-san seems to gravitate to highly complex two-ingredient cocktails (the Alaska or the Bamboo, for example), and FWIW, his version of the Hunter is 2 parts bourbon and 1 part Heering, stirred, and served in a double highball over a block of hard, clear, ice (no garnish). If you like the cocktail, you should try this version as a baseline before tarting it up with luxardo and bitters (although, to each his own). It's amazing how much depth and complexity you can get out of two liquors. Also FWIW, Ueno used a Japan-market-only high proof Ezra Brooks as his standard bourbon, primarily because it didn't cloud when stored cold and played nice in cocktails. Heering actually gave him an award in 2020, probably because of the incredible reach Ueno-san has with professionals around the world (www.barbizmag.com/news/high-five-bar-receives-heering-legend-of-the-list-special-award/).
Wow what an amazing story! Thank you for taking the time to share this. And to think you were served this cocktail by the man himself. Kudos to you my friend and thanks again for sharing this memory!
Oh and also for reference sake I did watch a TH-cam video of him making this cocktail but an exact recipe was not given. The recipe I used came from Diffords Guide. I am excited to try his authentic version so thank you for sharing that with me.
I make something very similar to that; In mixing glass combine 1.5 ounces of your favorite cocktail bourbon, 1 ounce Zirbenz (Stone Pine Liqueur), 1/2 ounce Luxardo, 2 dashes orange bitters. Add ice & gentle stir. Pour into rocks glass. Place rocks glass under a smoking hood and infuse with smoke (I like using cherry wood pellets). Garnish with a cherry.
Just made one before I go out to celebrate my 67th. Used Wild Turkey's Kentucky Spirit Single barrel and all your other recommended adders....what a treat. My wife is driving home. Thanks Kurt. New Subscriber-Pete.
Love this cocktail. Russel's Reserve was excellent, also tried it with a store pick knob creek single barrel select 10year 120prf and liked it even better
I just made this for my after work libation- quite nice. Reminds me of a "Remember the Maine" classic cocktail. In December specials at my home bar - The Corner Bar- I featured a riff called "Remember the Miami" (a nod to my old submarine USS MIAMI SSN755)...the difference was I used cacao nibs infused Carpano Antica Formula vermouth. Cheers
Made this for the 1st time for wifey and me and we both absolutely love it! It’ll be an alternative to our tried and true Old Fashioned. Thanks for video!!
Love the idea here. For me this was way too syrupy for my palate. I did a riff on it and found a happy spot for what I was expecting: 1 1/2 oz WT Rare Breed 3/8 oz Maraschino 1/4 oz cherry herring 4 dash orange bitters Orange peel expressed + garnish Maraschino cherry garnish Served over cube for extra dilution or longer (~1 minute) stirring time It reminds me of a very cherry influenced old fashioned. the orange peel oil adds a balance to the thick cherry flavor while the extra spice of the Wild Turkey also tries to add some kick, spice, and backbone to the two liqueurs. Cheers!
Kurt you have made me a big time bourbon fan. I have watched all the episodes and I am now subscribed to the channel... The Hunter cocktail is absolutely amazing my favorite after dinner drink by far. I use the Russell's 10 and I use 2 stir spoonfuls of luxardo cherry syrup. I really want to thank you for the down home way you present this channel. YOU DA MAN KURT
If you are interested…the “sentimental journey”. Express an orange peel and place it n the glass, and add 5 dashes of angostura bitters to the peel, and a small amount of ice or one large cube. In a mixing glass stir to chill 2.25 oz of your favorite bourbon, 1/2oz of Benedictine, 1/3oz of frangelico, & 1/6oz of Graham’s six grapes port. Strain and enjoy. I’ve been tweaking this original cocktail for about six months and this is the end result. I’d love to know what you think.
A good drink. The first time I used Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirt and it was really good but slightly sweet. Second time I used a little higher proof Peerless Rye and it was a great. A little more bourbon forward in the flavor. It's definitely worth making. Adjust to taste according to how sweet you want it.
Hit this with WT rare breed. Pairs well with a cigar. Reminds me of an old fashioned with a cherry finish. Cocktail feels very classic. Thanks for Intel on this.
Beautiful, just my type of bourbon cocktail during winter. High proof, big flavour, chilled coup and no citrus garnish garbage, just a quality cherry. I also enjoy using Luxardo in either a Hemmingway daiquiri or a tequila last word if I'm feeling like a warmer weather cocktail, great ingredient.
The wild turkey rare breed was lacking a mid palate and I added an equal part of Russell’s 10 year, which had a great mid palate. The two were more than the sum of their parts and made an amazing combination.
Kurt, I made this just as you did last night and it was fantastic. Russel's Reserve Single Barrel was a great choice. If I am having a bourbon cocktail, I usually go with an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan, but it's going to be The Hunter for the foreseeable future. Thanks!
Thanks for that. Just made one. Drinking it while typing this. Got the luxardo and heering ok but using old grand dad bonded for the bourbon. Its outstanding. This and the montenegro manhattan are my current favourite cocktails.
I made this one today. I didn’t have the cherry liqueur so I used some luxardo cherries juice as an alternate. Very tasty. Thank you and keep them coming please.
That does look good. And I agree 100% about using Cherry Herring. This past summer I decided to go on a Cherry liqueur tasting experiment - I noticed my local favorite liquor store started carrying more and more brands. I think by the end of the summer I had tried every one (they had 3 brands I had never heard of). None of them was really quite as good as the Cherry Herring brand. Keep up the good work.
Your video randomly came up on my feed today. I liked your video and wanted to give it a try. It’s great and my wife loves it too! I’m now subscribed to your channel and excited to try a few other cocktails. Especially your favorite mezcal cocktail…
Couldn't find the Teelings, so I used Hotel Tango Cherry Liqueur instead...this was a banger of a recipe, Kurt. I didn't use the Russell's SB...so I played around with WT101, Elijah Craig Barrel Strength A121, and my 2020 George T. Stagg...there were slightly different finishes, as we started climbing proof, but I think the extra cherry accentuates certain bourbons that have that note...DELICIOUS!!!
And….just tried it. Followed your recipe to a T (besides the bourbon). It’s like a very fancy, delicious old fashioned. I used Bulleit for anyone that cares. Good, affordable straight up bourbon with none of the foo foo shit.
I was looking for something interesting to drink tonight and landed on this one. Very good cocktail. I tried one with Russell's Reserve standard 90 proof. It was pretty decent. I then tried one with 1792 small batch and that was ever better! I think it worked better cause 1792 had just a slight bit more proof and I think it drinks a little hot for its' proof anyway. So I think 1792 might be a good option for people looking to make this with a bourbon under 100 proof.
I just made a version of this, though I had to make a few substitutions. I didn't have Heerings so I used a cherry wine called "Kijafa" that was sitting in the back of my liquor cabinet, and I used a chocolate bitters instead of the orange bitters. Overall I like the idea, all the cherry flavors play very nice with the bourbon. This first version came out a bit too sweet, but with a few tweaks I think it will be a very nice cocktail indeed.
Finally got around to making this cocktail today - using Bakers 7 instead of Russells ...was pleasantly surprised! Really good - might spritz an orange peel next time with the cherry garnish
I absolutely love Russells Reserve Single Barrell and have a small amount left. Time to pick up that HEERING and LUXARDO. I have never had either of those in anything but I have a feeling I will like this one so I will pick those up. I did get that Cherry bark vanilla for the Manhattan and that is a great bitter. I'm enjoying your channel.
RR single barrel ranks as one of my favorite bourbons period! Hope you like it! The vanilla bark bitters really adds a whole other dimension to the Manhattan!
Just stumbled across this one and since I had the ingredients on hand, figured I'd give it a go. (Used some 114 Noah's Mill I had on hand) Wow! Really amazing! Starts cool and sweet, but still has that very aromatic, warm tail from the strong Bourbon. Love it!! Thanks for sharing, it's def. going into the rotation! Subscribed!!! :)
Like Scott before me, I just stumbled into this video and fully enjoyed it. I look forward to giving it a try, the recipe sounds amazing. I just became a new sub and look forward to things to come ... Cheers

And to think I gave away my bottle of Cherry Heering because I hadn't opened it after 7 years. Guess I'll have to buy another. Great recipe - can't wait to try!
Not a big fan of orange bitters compared to others but I'll give this a try. I think black walnut or chocolate bitters might be better! Love both of those in my manhattans
I have not heard of this one will definitely need to give it a go. I agree with you I find that when mixing any kind of sweet liquor it helps to use a bourbon at or above 100 proof to help keep the backbone of the spirit. Sadly currently in my area cannot find a bottle of Russell's single barrel. I am still trying to find one. When I do this is gonna be the first thing I make with it, but first have to try a pour neat ;-) Have a great day and thanks for sharing Kurt. Also, wishing you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving.
I feel like this cocktail should be renamed the nightcap because a great sleep always follows it. I’ve not been able to pickup a Russell’s single barrel yet but maker’s cask strength works quite well. Thanks for the recipe!
Gday Kurt, a relatively new subscriber here. Really enjoy your channel particularly your reviews on Scotches. I do enjoy your pleasant, easy way of conveying what you really think about the spirits you have in your bar and the new ones you purchase. Have to say your bourbon cocktail in this video sounds delicious. Great channel Kurt keep up the good work sir. James in Thailand
I have a pretty well stocked bar, but made a special trip to Total wine to make this one. I have plenty of Bourbon, but since I was there and they had Russell's(why not)! I have to say I really like it!
can't wait for you to go live!!! great video Kurt! Can't believe you are almost at 20,000......SO exciting!!!! Would love to see you make a Punch in an old-fashioned glass punch bowl! Holidays are coming!!!
Luxardo and Cheery Herring... two of my favs! and all in one cocktail?... whats not to love? I made this right after I watched this video. I used OGD 114(RR not on hand) served over a block of clear ice in a rocks glass. I would love to add some egg white like in a Boston Sour to get that awesome creamy texture and mouthfeel! Old Fashioned, Whiskey Sour/Boston Sour, Gold Rush have been my favs... but I think The Hunter just might have taken the #1 spot!
OMG Kurt! This was SUPER delicious! I took you word for word and got the recommended ingredients! This did not disappoint. I’m gonna start calling you ‘Uncle Kurt’. 🤗 🥃
This looks like the PERFECT replacement for my post-Thanksgiving feast Old Fashioned. Don't get me wrong, I love Old Fashioneds but it's time to set it aside for something suited to the fall and this is it!!!! All I need now is a warm blanket, my cozy slippers and a darn good football game on the flat screen : ) Thanks Kurt!!! Looking forward to y'all's first ever livestream soon! Happy Thanksgiving!!!
With the bar being in our personal home we have not opened it up in a business sense. Hoping eventually to have an operating legit cocktail bar / whiskey club at some point.
@@slbdrinks Kurt, its a peated version of a rusty nail. Peated scotch, drambuie, cherry hearing. Quite sweet so may not be for everyone, and needs ice to cut the sweetness for me.
Great cocktail. Tried it for the first time over New Year's. Only difference was I used Old 55(local to me, 115 proof) Single Barrel Bourbon and found some cherries a bit less spendy than Luxardo's. Legit warning: pace yourself.
Okay, I think I got it…. I tried Old Forester Rye and it was a train wreck. Harsh and conflicted. Then I went the other direction and tried Makers 46 and loved it. The “darkness” of the Heering really comes through.
Wow--you weren't kidding. This is absolutely delicious! We couldn't find Russell's so we used Four Roses Single Barrel. What other bourbons would you suggest for this cocktail?
Truly I think your choice was a fabulous pick! I want to try that in the cocktail. Nice ABV, higher rye whiskey, great flavor. I think the only recommendation I would have in choosing a bourbon is make sure it’s 100 proof or higher. If not I think the bourbon will wash out.
Just fixed my own- Changed out the Heering for Hotel Tango's Cherry. Can't find Heering anywhere in Indiana right now. All other parts were the same. Really good.
@@slbdrinks They are also Vet owned here in Indiana. pretty good batch of spirits. Outside of the Reserve Bourbon(6 year). Most of their line is in the 30-40 range.
Well...just sitting by the lake, 39 degrees, nice campfire, with my wife of 34 yrs, and had a Hunter made with Rye. A perfect evening!!!

Ohhhh noooo lol! I have done the same thing with other liquors as well. Sure hope you like it!
I really like a "old fashion" and I know I will love the "hunter".
Plz let me know what you think when you try it.
Thanks so much. Just found your channel. Made this cocktail for Thanksgiving. Perfect. Thanks.
So glad you enjoyed it!
Not a big fan of orange bitters compared to others but I'll give this a try. I think black walnut or chocolate bitters might be better! Love both of those in my manhattans
Make it your own! Use the bitters you enjoy.
Thanks for sharing this! I’ll have to try!
Plz do and let me know what you think!
just coming across your channel. i'm a huge bourbon lover and wow, what a basement bar! great stuff! this drink looks delicious! subscribed!
Thanks so much for joining us!
Thanks so much for the kind words! Hopefully you will find a bottle soon!
We will try it!
Excellent!
Gathered all the ingredients and made one. Fantastic cocktail 🍸 👌 Thanks for the recommendation
That’s awesome! Really glad you enjoyed it!
Can't wait to try this.
Hope you like it!
Trying this tomorrow
I feel like this cocktail should be renamed the nightcap because a great sleep always follows it. I’ve not been able to pickup a Russell’s single barrel yet but maker’s cask strength works quite well. Thanks for the recipe!
Makers cask strength would be a fantastic substitute! One of my favorites!
My new favorite channel.
Thanks!
Nice with maraska cherry liqueur-only thing I have available here. Still super good! Thanks for the vid!!!!!!’n
This Sun B is potent. Wow!
Looks delicious definitely going to try this one.
Plz let me know what you think!
I’m gonna be trying this in the new year!
Thanks bud!!
Thank you so much for joining us and all the way from Thailand! That’s awesome!
This looks fine, gotta try it.
Plz do and let me know what you think.
I VERY much look forward to making this cocktail!!! Thanks so much for the share Kurt! :)
Sure hope you enjoy!
Awesome videos. Love the recipe in the description.
I have a pretty well stocked bar, but made a special trip to Total wine to make this one. I have plenty of Bourbon, but since I was there and they had Russell's(why not)! I have to say I really like it!
Had me sweating for a minute lol but super glad you liked it!
There should be an option to give more than one thumbs up for this... nice job Kurt!!!
Thanks so much lol!
Can’t wait to try this cocktail!
Hope you like it!
can't wait for you to go live!!! great video Kurt! Can't believe you are almost at 20,000......SO exciting!!!! Would love to see you make a Punch in an old-fashioned glass punch bowl! Holidays are coming!!!
That’s a great idea! Thanks Jill!
Wow ! Looks amazing Kurt ! Definitely going to give that a go this Fri aft work !! Thanks again!
Awesome! Hopefully you enjoy the cocktail!
Have to try this one, I've only ever made it with rye.
Plz do!
I am ready to jump through my screen to taste that!! Awesome!!!!
It’s a pretty darn good!
@@slbdrinks Going to make at least one this coming Saturday!!
Really glad you liked it!
OMG Kurt! This was SUPER delicious! I took you word for word and got the recommended ingredients! This did not disappoint. I’m gonna start calling you ‘Uncle Kurt’. 🤗 🥃
Hey feel free my friend! I am an uncle to many people lol
Sounds like a perfect Thanksgiving! Enjoy!
Just made one and believe me you don’t need a warm blanket after having one! Nice drink Kurt
No doubt and well said! Gave me a chuckle for tonight lol.
How does one get invited to the basement?
With the bar being in our personal home we have not opened it up in a business sense. Hoping eventually to have an operating legit cocktail bar / whiskey club at some point.
went out today and bought all needed....DEEEELICIOUS!!!!
So glad you enjoyed it! It def is an easy killer cocktail!
Cherry heering is also used in a "rusty compass", a fantastic peated scotch cocktail
I have to look that one up!
Lol you are correct on that! Legit 2 of those and I am done.
Okay, I think I got it…. I tried Old Forester Rye and it was a train wreck. Harsh and conflicted. Then I went the other direction and tried Makers 46 and loved it. The “darkness” of the Heering really comes through.
Good deal! In thinking about it I would agree that rye would probably not be the choice for this cocktail. Glad you liked it!
Old forester 100
That looks delicious!
Thank you!
Just fixed my own- Changed out the Heering for Hotel Tango's Cherry. Can't find Heering anywhere in Indiana right now. All other parts were the same. Really good.
Great glad you liked it! The only cherry I had tried before Heering was Luxardo and it just wasn’t that good. Glad the tango worked out!
@@slbdrinks They are also Vet owned here in Indiana. pretty good batch of spirits. Outside of the Reserve Bourbon(6 year). Most of their line is in the 30-40 range.
