I can imagine your sadness, but you brought very nice footage, takes, editing, storytelling and if you had skipped the confession and punishing yourself in that, nobody would have noticed. Yes, I've been in Milan and have fond memories of the city and a suite in Hotel Gallia. After 4 nights there, I moved on to a backpackers dormitory in Florence and that was a great experience at another level.
Next time you go to Milan, go into the department store (Rinascente, if it is still there) next to the Duomo and in there to the top floor where there is (or used to be) a restaurant with a view of the duomo and the square.
As you eat pizza as a meal, note that in classical Italian cuisine it is supposed to be a small bite as a course somewhere in the beginning of a meal of several courses.
Now "invest" in a memory card case for formatted, empty, cards (for example a Pelican 0915 if you shoot SD cards - Pelican is called Peli in Europe), and another case for cards recorded with your "precious" footage (for example a Ruggard Leda). In my example the Peli case is all grey and the Ruggard has a bright green seal that could indicate "colour" or "footage" being on the cards in that case. I know some photographers who use one case and place cards label up when formatted/empty and label down when recorded but I find that too dangerous. Two such cases are easily fit into a workflow of formatting, shooting, transferring, formatting and if you have a bunch of cards, you can agree with yourself to never format cards during a day of shooting, always immediately format (in camera) after offloading to safe storage and have the formatted cards ready for the next shoot. But these cases are substantial and sort-of waterproof so if that is a problem for you, then you could do a similar thing with fabric pouches for memory cards.
There's an alternative way of using cards, that may seem a bit more expensive: buy the cheapest largest capacity cards with just enough speed to sustain your kind of work, fill these cards and never format (=erase). This makes your original footage your backup too, as soon as you have uploaded your footage into safe storage. This is based on the given that the price of cards depends on: (1) capacity, (2) speed, (3) life expectancy in memory cell rewrites, (4) controller, firmware and I/O cache. If you buy cheap cards, then these will be less fast, and also will use memory cells that can survive a lot less rewrites. If you only write to a card once and only read from it, the card may "live forever".
Oh! That is missed chance for us however, the available footage is enough to do their magic. Keep smiling both! 😃😃

In the county where I live there is also a town named Milan. But, de uitspraak is My-lan. I am a volunteer firefighter here, and I always laugh as I hear the dispatcher call out a response for My-lan.
And, a different thing- which came to mine as Adi said it is early, but already busy; there is an American travel journalist, Samantha Brown. She spoke of the Amalfi coast and Il Dolce far niente-- for Dutchies- think "Lekker niksen" She did a show from Milan and said, "no dolce far niente here- these people have work to do."
