When I was a kid my dad rented this for us to watch. I had a great time until the ending monologue from the father about if something in your house acts funny or is broken, you might have a gremlin. That idea terrified me! I recall going to bed that night and assuming gremlins were hiding all over just out of sight. GREAT MOVIE!
movie trading cards, storybooks, videogames, tshirts and other clothing and toys of Gremlins from back then to today. Im an older fan and Id have to say that gremlins is having a better success today with merchandise then it did in the early 1980s
Ive heard the original was supposed to have stuff like billys mothers severed head being thrown down the stairs at him, damn i wanna see that now in that 80s quality and hue
I got to meet Zach Galligan at a convention a few years back and he was nice. At the same convention, there was a panel where he did a live commentary on Gremilns, it was fun.
i grew up with Gremlins back in the day. Even back then the movie's ending was pretty gory with Stripe's death. and these days Im surprised Gremlins and Gremlins 2 have alot of toy merchandise than Gremlins 1 did back then. There's a crapload of Gremlins NECA figures which is insane. Plus the old storybook books of Gremlins and the old NES videogame of Gremlins 2 and other videogame releases of Gremlins 1 and/or 2
Gremlins is a fantastic film. I like the second one a little bit more because it it is so wacky and basically a live-action cartoon. 1984 was a difficult year for Dick Miller. First he was shot by the Terminator, then he was run over by the Gremlins in the snowplow.
Holy crap, I had that big Gremlins story book. I also remember my brother having one of the original Gizmo plush, had hard plastic eyes, nose and mouth.
Great way to end season 6. Its been a fun watch and listen along with this channel these past several years. Have a great holiday and i can't wait to see what you 2 bring to next season.
One of my earliest memories was my parents taking me to watch a double-feature of Ghostbusters and Gremlins at a drive-in. I was way young, but I remember loving the movies. The particular things I remember being scared of, as a kid, in both movies: - Gremlin in Christmas Tree (Gremlins) - Zombie Cab Driver (Ghostbusters)
They did kinda overthink Gremlins 2. Joe Dante did say that he had zero desire to make a sequel to Gremlins but they were going to do it with or without him and, from what I remember reading in interviews he decided he wanted to make it an over the top ridiculous sequel because that is how he felt about sequels. I mean I like it and all but they really didn't have to go quite so goofy just for the sake of being goofy.
Great video, guy's. I love Gremlins and Gremlins 2. Rand Peltzer is one of my favorite characters, It's too bad he didn't come back for Gremlins 2:The New Batch
In the novelization by George Gipe ( surname might be wrong ) the backstory of the Mogwais' origin was that they were from another world and they were created by a scientist called Mogturmen ( might be wrong about some of the details )as a kind of domesticated pet.
I always champion 1984 as the best year ever in movie history. Just look up all the films that dropped that year. The only year that comes close, funny enough, is 1985
judge reinhold deserves a spot in the mdu. fast times at ridgemont high, so many 80's supporting roles the fact that this film still holds up today is a testament to in camera effects
I used to love playing the Gremlins slot machine when my dad took me to the casino with him. That and 3 card poker were my games when we went. The bonus games depended on if you chose Gizmo or Stripe. You got a bigger bonus in the Stripe game because I believe you paid a little more for that one. But they activated the same, where 3 of them had to come up and then you got a bunch of bonus spins. That's usually the only way to come out ahead on a slot machine. The Stripe one had a cool animation from the movie where he grabs the live wires and electrocutes something. In the game it was the numbers. So you'd win big if you got higher amounts or got a Wild while the theme music played. I remember also they'd show the clip where Billy and Kate would run out of the movie theater from the back sometimes too, so it's a fun slot if you ever find it. I definitely recommend it. I believe they also have slots for The Godfather, Wizard of Oz and Caddyshack as well and they seem to pay off too.
I just noticed you have the same book I had and still have since I was a kid. Amazing pictures in that thing. I wanna cry seeing that thing again..I think it's stored away somewhere..
No better way to end the holiday season! Love this movie! My daughter's favorite! She has two Gizmo plushies and takes them everywhere! Happy holidays Joe and Sean! See you next year! 😂
Im so glad you guys covered Gremlins, it is one of my all time favorite movies. I put this on the same level as the original Ghostbusters. It is a perfect movie. Another Joe Dante i absolutely love is The Burbs it stars Tom Hanks and Corey Fledman is an absolute joy fun to watch.
Unfortunately this was one of those times growing up when I saw the sequel on TV before the original. Needless to say I fell in love with it and immediately tried to locate the first film. I do remember feeling a little bummed that stripe was the only gremlin w/somewhat of an individual personality, like each one in the sequel. But I still enjoyed the hell out of it, and it became one of my yearly movies that always had to be watched during Christmas. And tonight when I pick up my daughter, we're watching Gremlins, Violent Night, and I'm finally gonna introduce her to Krampus⛄ Joe & Sean, banger review as always. I know I'm gonna really enjoy your upcoming Joe Dante reviews. Joe, Sean and the Dumpster Dwellers, Merry Christmas 🎄🎁⛄
Casino and Toy Story was the Barbinheimer of 1995. Greatest two-fer of my life. And I find it funny that, to me, the Santa story is the part that can do the most damage to a young kid...😂 A nice, big Merry Christmas Dump is exactly what I needed. Cheers, boys.🎄🍻
I found at least two gremlins voiced by Peter Cullen, I slowed down the gremlins laughing at Mrs Deagle's death because they were sped up, Peter is the one front in center I recognized his deep voice when I slowed down the audio, and later during the bar scene he's one that says "hey man what's happening?" after turning on the radio, he mentioned that in an interview.
Great review guys. The Futtermans don’t die. On a recent rewatch at my local cinema, I heard the news reporter in the background saying they interviewed Mr Futterman in hospital
When i went Zach Galligan everybody just kept asking him about Gremlins 3 and he had the same response about how it's just not possible and it would just be CG and it wouldn't have the same Joy of The originals. I got up there and ask him about the wax works movies and he said he barely remembers making those movies and it was just a weird experience....
He did the same thing when I met him and had him sign my Waxworks tape. Not sure if he had a bad experience or what on that movie. Super nice guy though! -Joe
Also watched the hell out of this as a kid. So incredibly fun and you're right, both movies hold up so well thanks to the work put in to them. This JAWS and The Blob are in this special category of movies I saw too young that traumatized and fascinated me all at once and helped create interests and tastes.
I honestly prefer the sequel and I absolutely adore the first film so that hopefully puts it into perspective how much I enjoy this series😁 Great video as usual guys! Happy Holidays to you and the families🎄
Happy Gnu Year! We watched this a few times this Christmas last month. It's one of my Stepsons favorites. Speaking of the Futtermans, if you listen carefully and it's pretty faint & low but the news report at the Peltzer house before the old man arrives they mention the Futtermans are in the hospital. My youunger sister and I used to watch this and I always worried that she would learn the truth about Santa during Pheobe's monologue, but it never seemed to phase her. Great episode!
1:36:18 Just commenting again to add to this, I get the same cozy vibe from E.T... I think its the house and such, I don't know why... Also the effects in Gremlins are absolutely amazing. Every time I see it, it surprises me how messy and gross some scenes can be. The Gremlins multiplying with the bubbles on their backs, especially in Gremlins 2 where you see them in more detail with the veins and the mini growing Gremlins... Still gives me goosebumps, not many things do that now.
One of my favorite things about the Mrs. Deagle scene is that when she's locking the door and trying to get to her chair, she says, "They've come for me! I'm not ready yet." She knows she's a monster and likely going to Hell. Also, check out her office hours for her business. That detail really makes me laugh.
Note how Billy asks his mom if she s OK when she's chopping vegetables..She hesitates and says Oh..Sad movie..I have a feeling she is thinking about Rand and him being a failed salesman.Like she's got all of this on her mind and when the Gremlins start wrecking her kitchen she loses it. I think Rand is lucky he was outta town, because I think she probably would've stabbed his ass after finishing off the Gremlins in her house. Yes the tree one too..Haha, she was on the fringe the whole time and I love how subtle her performance is.
I wish we could get a Gremlins 3 so we can find out why Kate hates Thanksgiving. She specifically says “tell someone you hate Washington’s Birthday or Thanksgiving, no one bats an eye”. Gremlins 2 is set on Washington’s Birthday, as she begins to tell that story, but gets cutoff. Gremlins 3 has to be set on Thanksgiving, and I want the story this time
By the way there's a pretty cool Easter egg in the beginning of the movie. When the dad is walking into Chinatown, there is a green car crashed into a light pole in the background. That car is a 78 gremlin
Love your content.. keep it up... It's informative about movies growing up... Now if you could do one about tango and cash or space invaders .. hahahaba

1:27:31 in the sequel they actually do it XD while melting one gremlin is yells "I`m melting!! what a world!" hahahaha and he even has a Witch hat that scene kills me every time, english or spanish (i`m mexican)

"This is a B movie on an A movie budget". Well, director Dante already had a B movie background (Pirahna, The Howling, Hollywood Boulevard). He even worked for Roger Corman , the B king himself, before Spielberg took him under his wing.
I thought I once read Poltergeist, a PG movie, was also one of the ficks mentioned when discussing the need for a PG-13 rating. Have a great time with your family and friends during the season! Be safe 🎉
Poltergeist came out a couple years before and was originally slapped with an R but they got it changed to PG, so it must have kept happening, haha. Hope you have a great Holiday as well! Thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼
well, a lot of ideas already were committed to film in the 70s annd 80s, and the studios became adverse to taking chances when they can easily look back on a ton of low budget failures. The studios don't get the lesson of taking some of those and doing better, better story, directing, etc etc, and they go with what worked so they can make bank. And frankly, there are still a ton of B to C grade movies made, maybe more so overseas.
That may be part of it, but there were more risks taken back then because you could only see them in the theatre. When video came out, especially with the rental of video, the studios actually INCREASED their risks because they knew they would recoup from the video market especially if it was a hit. That went on into the 2000’s before rental stores went kaput and streaming took over. The landscape of making and distributing films is so drastically different from the way it was that, especially for abstract ideas and indies, you need to basically have it all figured out and even have a proof of concept film for them to even be considered. There is a lot more accessibility to making films but also the odds of getting distributed, much less making any money, are incredibly small odds. Which is why we mostly get the same shit churned out unless it’s a smaller studio putting up the funds and championing the movie. Which is why right now supporting those films, especially in the theatre, I think is crucial to the overall health of storytelling through film going forward. -Joe
I randomly hummed the Gremlins theme the other day while decorating.
Honestly I'm really glad you guys are ending 2023 with this classic horror comedy. Close to it's 40th anniversary. Happy Holidays Movie Dumpster 😁

Peter Cullen, I'm almost positive, is the Gremlin in the bar scene with the sunglasses by the radio that says "Whashappenin!"
When I was a kid my dad rented this for us to watch. I had a great time until the ending monologue from the father about if something in your house acts funny or is broken, you might have a gremlin. I've always wanted to see Chris Columbus' original Gremlins script be made into a movie. It's supposed to be a truly dark horror movie.
Actually I think that I remember reading that Critters was in development before Gremlins, its just that Gremlins got released first.

Secrets of the Mogwai is really good, it is kid friendly but they do have things like hands and fingers being ripped off so it does have a dark edge.

People always say Critters is a ripoff of Gremlins, but in reality Critters was written before Gremlins was even made.
Critters is so different it doesn’t come off as a rip off at all. Munchies on the other hand 🤣 -Joe
I can't say that the effect of the gremlin mob walking down the street holds up at all. It's horrendous stop motion. The rest holds up.
Not the best but It’s still impressive and awesome. There was no other way to really do it then, and it’s still charming as hell.

Also, Hollywood is trying to bank on all those original chances that were taken right now. Beetlejuice, Ghostbusters, Halloween, TMNT, etc.
I’m also still floored how Beverly Hills Cop 4 is direct to Netflix. It’s just a weird time for movie making.
