That intro had me dead. Mellow's mama calling him out with the pets too, but at least Mellow loves his animals. I knew about Howie Mandel & Frank Welker, but didn't know Michael Winslow and Peter Cullen did the gremlin voices either!
Merry Christmas. Glad your mom could be in this reaction, she's hilarious. I love this movie. When it turns to horror, it properly turns to horror. Having said that, it's also a great comedy even after the horror starts. The Gremlins watching Snow White is just too much fun.
You're not wrong picking up on the Looney Tunes vibes. The man at the bar that Billy showed his drawing to was a cameo from Chuck Jones, one of the most famous animators and directors of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. He also ended up doing the intro animation with Bugs and Daffy for Gremlins 2.
1. This movie is a Christmas *classic* , it freaked me out as a kid but because of that I remember it years later and really appreciate how batsh!t it goes. 2. Its easy to forget in retrospect how brutal this movie was. The Gremlins alone legit ramp up a pretty solid bodycount by the end. Fun fact: For years the Mogwai's lore from their expanded material was that they were basically alien experiments gone wrong ( Gizmo was the *intended* result and everything else was a defect) who's purpose was to travel the universe in search of intelligent species and make peace with them when they were ready to join other intelligent species out in the universe But relatively recently, all that was retconned outright. And now their origins apparently tie them to to the chinese sibling creation gods Fuxi and Nuwa. Nuwa being an optimist who created the Mogwai and gave them their benevolent and positive personalities to be the best friends of man, whereas Fuxi was much more cynical and gave them their rules as a way to test humanity's carelessness and greed. Lemme know which origin you prefer, the original or the new one?
Thank you for adding all this information, especially about Gizmo being an experiment gone wrong. I think the reason why Warner Bros. changed the origin story is due to the popularity of “Lilo & Stitch” & Disney basically ripping off George Gipe (the man who wrote the novelization of the “Gremlins” movie) so they could use Gizmo’s origin for Stitch. I prefer Gipe’s version to the new spin they have on them. Also, I want Gremlins. Like an army of them. The only issue with them is that they don’t explain in the film that Gizmo is basically immortal whereas the Gremlins only live for a short amount of time so that’s why they’re insane & hyperactive. All they need is hugs & love. Not one single person tried to show them any kindness all because they were kinda ugly. To me, they’re so ugly, they’re cute.
@@Vampwars to be fair, trying to be friends with the Gremlins, aside from Gizmo and whatever other Mogwai that are out there, is like trying to befriend D&D's full blooded Orcs. You MIGHT be able to get them to like you, but they are bloodthirsty and destructive *by nature* . Its the equivalent of putting a loaded gun on the table and waiting for the day someone cpuld take it and shoot you with it. Which in the case of the Gremlins might be sooner than you'd think.
The magical origin of the Mogwai does create a plausible explanation for the whole _eating after midnight_ _plot hole_ . Basically the magic "sets" the Mogwi's "internal clock" to whatever location it's currently in. However one could possibly argue that if it's of alien origin then there is some sort of mechanism that basically allows it to do the same thing.
This was originally going to be a hard R horror with the mom getting her head cut off and the dog dangling by its entrails and not Christmas lights. But seeing the puppets and how they looked on camera they decided it be better as a PG horror/comedy.
I love films with your mom. She's awesome. Seems like just a vibe and a joy to be around. Also we need a Who Framed Roger Rabbit reaction with Mama Zo!!
Fun fact: It's because of THIS movie and Temple of Doom, that we have the PG-13 rating nowadays! Also, Merry Christmas to you and your mom. Thanks for the awesome video!
The funniest part to me as a kid they started Jumping Santa Claus and look at the police like... You want some too 🤣🤣🤣 and... Yeah yall ready for Gremlins 2 even funnier
Mello, the only thing better than you reacting to Gremlins on Christmas is having a collaboration with your charming mother! You two reacting together are amazing! ❤❤❤
I was a teen when this came out. While waiting in line to get a ticket, a father with his 4 or 5 year were in front of me. The child had a lifesize figure of Stripe in his hands. I knew what the film was, they did not. At the end while exiting, the father was holding Stripe and the child was crying. I laughed. 😆
This movie was an idea by Christopher Columbus and he made a script for it, Steven Spielberg got a hold of it and made it more child friendly. Cris Walas made all the puppets and animatronics. Gremlins came out a year after Return of the Jedi. Corey Feldman also voiced Donatello in the best tmnt film from 1990. Also the gremlin did say Phone Home. They call him Stripe because earlier in the film Corey Feldman character said he had a stripe on his head.
It's more memorable this way - because there are some genuinely scary moments mixed with genuinely funny moments it's a lot more memorable than just nonstop horror
I love when you and your mom watch a classic movie! Its always hilarious, yall bounce off each others humor perfectly. I look forward to more of you both together in the future.
'Gremlins' and especially 'Gremlins 2: The New Batch' could be Joe Dante's personality dumped out onto a movie screen. A large part of both films consists of random sight gags involving the titular gremlins which in one DVD commentary track he suggested without the limitations imposed by using puppets, those scenes might not work as well. Interestingly, in the novelization, mogwai *are* aliens! Well, they were genetically engineered by them. Gremlins being an unfortunate and unforeseen side-effect. As for their skills with technology, while they don't seem very smart most of the time, mogwai (and gremlins) have an innate knowledge of machines it's just that their love of chaos is stronger than their sense of self-preservation... Ps. I don't know what happened to her on Thanksgiving, but if you watch the sequel you'll hear about the traumatic event that happened to Kate on President's Day...
22:30 In the original script that was much darker, the mother did die. Billy comes home and the gremlins have cut off her Head and it goes bouncing down the stairs. They also ate the dog and Gizmo actually changed into the stripe gremlin.
8:50 this came out after Return of the Jedi. ROTJ came out in 1983 and Gremlins 1984. 14:31 George Jones (famous country singer) lost his drivers license and would drive his tractor to the bar. 33:54 it was all that Aquanet back in the 80s they used in their hair.
This was one of the films responsible for the creation of the PG-13 rating. Absolute classic. The sequel is also awesome but a completely different experience, do not skip it. The animated series "Secret of the Mogwai" came out like last year and was a decent little story, but a little underwhelming for a longtime fan. Hopefully they find a way to do a 3rd film but it isnt necessary at all at this point.
Because this movie is supposedly a kid's film and pg as you said here in Greece the channels always used to show it on Saturday noon. Like 14:00(2:00) for Americans. Gremlins 2: The New Batch is a great sequel. 👌
Gremlins, much like Die Hard, was released during the summer months as a summer blockbuster, and it just happened to be set during Christmas. A classic, this movie scared the heck out of me as a child. My sister didn't tell me the plot, and I thought it was a cute film about Gizmo 😭
pisces rule!
Is it just me or did the creator of furbie get the idea for the creation from gizmo?
That happened to me too, but I ended up Really loving it, and felt I technically wasn't lied to because Gizmo is the one who wins the final fight.
