Not related to the movie, but i got my prize package from you guys today and wanted to say thank you so much. I will cherish what you sent me forever. Seriously i appreciate it so much and found it so nice that you even included alf stickers and even some Halloween candy in the package. As an American that lives in the UK now, i have missed these candies so it means so much and to me. Long live Movie Dumpster! 📼
Salem's Lot is one of my favorite Stephen King novels! I completely agree, the best part of Stephen King's writing is the characters, in many adaptations to films, they just are not fleshed out enough. Great review!
I saw this as a kid and loved it then, and it still holds up today. I actually really liked the recent reboot, I thought it was great as well. Someone else mentioned "Night Flyer" such a great adaptation that no one really talks about! It's one of my favorite Vampire movies of all time 💀⚒️✝️
Best scene for me is when the Barlow does the undertaker sit up in his coffin, and Ben just elbows him back down as a jack in the box toy. It has me dying 😂
It always gets me with this design of the vampire as when i read the book I never saw it as it is here, and i absolutely love the book it's one of my favourites of kings it's so underrated 💜 but yeah the book and my interpretation of the vampire will always be better than the film
This movie is such comfort food for me... I watch it every year. I read the book after watching the movie which means a lot of the visualization of the book I just visualized the movie but i really enjoyed it either way. Looking forward to the book to the movie and ripe review.
Hooper really nailed this. I know King initially was not a fan of the way Barlow was handled but grew to really like it. For an example of the movie being better than the book see Jaws.
I'm right there with your dad, Joe. I was 5 when it premiered and distinctly remember hiding behind the lazyboy when Ralphie shows up floating outside the window. The laserdisc actually contains the full TV Cut with all the bumpers. I have never seen "The Movie" cut, but will check it out!
This was the very first Stephen King Miniseries to air and it would be followed by IT, THE STAND, STORM OF THE CENTURY, THE LANGOLIERS and THE TOMMYKNOCKERS.
In 2004 version Father Callahan betrays his faith his parish and his town by willingly joining Barlow which is why the miniseries begins with Mears killing Callahan in New York. He also kills Burke in hospital with a metal stake.
To answer your question about Father Callahan in the Rob Lowe version of Salem’s Lot it is more faithful to the book when Callahan confronts Barlow, but then he takes a villain turn (unlike the book).
Yeah they combine and switch characters around more than the Hammer Dracula series lol. However even different from the book, Barlow in movie has become iconic much like Karloff Frankenstein monster while very different from book has become the most associated image with Frankenstein.
This version is still creepier but I prefer the 2004 version. The writing, acting, character development, the town itself as a character, that all works better for me in that one. Although Donald Sutherland's Straker doesn't touch James Mason.
The new one blew my expectations away. It was better than I thought. Usually Kings remakes fall flat for some reason even though I love him and he is my favourite all time in the horror field. But wow the new one blew me away. Minus the ending being anti-climatic but most movies don't do a good ending anymore
That 1979 version is terrifying for a made for TV movie. I'm looking forward to the Ripe Review on the new one because I wasn't a fan. Great episode as always.
We don't really celebrate Halloween in Australia. Our stores have been on the push for Christmas since July. If we did celebrate it though, I'd be prepared: because I took poor care of my teeth in my youth, I have natural vampire fangs. Although , that does limit my costume options a bit hehe I should also stress that I take care of my teeth now and have since my teens hehe
If they gonna do a faithful adoptation of the book, they should hire directors like ari aster for the creepy psychology factor or fede alvarez for the atmosphere & proper use of practical effects + cgi. My opinion only 😅
1:13:05 In some vampire lore, when you invite a vampire into your home, you're powerless to stop them. Vampires can enter a home uninvited but would be weakened and easily killed. But that's just in some lore. Like garlic never works against vampires but the Garlic FLOWER is deadly to them. Vampire and werewolf mythos are fascinating sometimes.
We guess because Barlow is the master he can? And the underling vampires have to be invited? They do establish they need to be invited for this version.
Well, there was a 2004 reboot that aired on TNT starring Rob Lowe, Rutger Hauer, RIP Andre Braugher, RIP and Donald Sutherland RIP. I thought it was pretty good.
Stephen King even wrote a short story in 1988 called THE NIGHT FLIERE, where a tabloid reporter tails a serial killer who travels by plane and thinks he's a vampire by taking out his victims at small isolated airports, but what if it's not just someone dressed as a vampire, what if it is a real vampire?
Great video. I watched salems lot on the 1980 rerun. I was 5. Traumatized me for life.we rented the movie in 1987. I watched the rob lowe when it came out. The o.g. tv series is still the best one.
One of the problems with getting into "silent movies" is that very few of the really good ones survived. Another is that the music was done locally in theatres so there was very little consistency in the soundrack music/scoring. So they are very hit and miss. Regarding Nosferatu... While versions of it did survive, it is ironically something of a "Frankenstein's monster" in that it is made up of bits and pieces of lots of different old prints spliced together with someone trying their best to recreate the originally intended music. Stoker's widow forced the destruction of the vast majority of the film prints in a successful lawsuit based around copyright infringement. (Actually quite a fascinating story in and of itself). There was a German remake in the 70s with Klaus Kinski as the lead. Colour and sound/speech, a "modern" ish remake of the old silent film. It's a damn good watch. If you don't enjoy the old "silent" version.
Danny at the window, early day ASMR. 😉😂🤣 Yeah, Mark in this movie, if he was a girl, and if you replace magic with either wrestling or video games, I'll let you pick, that was very much me growing up. Another difference though is my parents was into horror too. Fun Jen Fact time, first time I saw this movie was actually in school. We had these clubs in school that would meet the final Friday of the month. I signed up for Film Club, mostly because it was watching movies. For October, the teacher wanted to do a horror movie, but this was just prior to the whole PG-13 Horror Boom, so most horror movies was Rated R. However, Salem's Lot was Unrated, due to being Made For TV, so that loophole was what got the teacher to pick that movie. And for me, I loved that movie. When it comes to werewolves, Ginger Snaps is my fav, when it comes to vampires, Salem's Lot is my fav. That shortly afterwards lead me to wanting to check out the 2004 version, which not much of a fan of. It's alright, I guess, but didn't do it for me like the 1970s version. And OK, I'll be good and wait until the 2024 version video until I tell you where it ranks between the two. Though I'm guessing you could take a wild guess. I mean I may be in the minority, but I actually like Salem's Lot more so than Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and I love that movie as well. Really, I struggle to think of a Tobe Hooper movie I didn't like. Fun House, looking forward to seeing your video on that, love that one as well. Anyways, thank you so very much for this, really enjoyed it.
Didn’t much care for the recent one. Honestly feel this could do with a proper 10 episode season to flesh out the whole thing. I did like the 2004 version issues and all and liked the changes they did. I understand those who didn’t like it. I still rewatch both the original and 2004, won’t be adding a third sadly.
Is there any material left for the "From Book to the Movie" episode? Sean was on fire! 😅 Fun fact, you probabily know this one already, but "Salem's Lot" was released in Spain as "Phantasma II" a sequel to "Phantasm"...
the 1979 version has some hokey and dated elements, but it's still much better than the Rob Lowe version. Haven't seen the latest one, but I've heard it's disappointing.
I read Salem's Lot when I was 10 and for some reason I had a head cannon theory that everything in the story was a lie, and that Ben Mears created the whole "vampire" incident in the town in order to kidnap and molest Mark Petrie. In the very first chapter Ben ends up taking this teen boy to Mexico and asks him "Do you love me?" and Mark starts crying [for some reason ??? hmmmm] and says "Yes, God yes!" and falls into Ben's arms. I think the whole story is a "red herring" for Ben molesting his "adopted son" Mark. The vampire Barlow is a mental image of Mark's mind of the molestation he is experiencing, but he has psychologically projected it away from his "father figure" Ben onto a made up monster in order to cope with his abuse. But that's just my Freudian reading of Stephen King LOL
Personally I hold the 2004 miniseries as the best adaptation as far as accuracy to the book. Never understood or liked the Nosferatu-esqe Barlow either.
It made sense at the time considering the amount of Dracula movies, especially ones depicting a typical dude. They went outside the box and it paid off. -Joe
Don't agree with Sean. I think the 79 Salem's Lot is better than the book. But I'm one of those weirdos that's not a huge fan of Stephen King's writing. 😂
Ok goin a bit full nerd here but Gentlemen!! It wasn't just Sting that glowed when Orcs and Goblins were near, it was all Elvish blades that glowed. Ok Geek rant over. Lol

Creepy
Can't wait to watch this one guys! Hope y'all have a spoopy Halloween!!
Salem's Lot is one of my favorite Stephen King novels! I completely agree, the best part of Stephen King's writing is the characters, in many adaptations to films, they just are not fleshed out enough. Great review!
I read it in middle school. When the kid falls in the basement trap, it really messed me up in its heartlessness

One of the best King adaptations, imo.
Its as if Tobe Hooper was reading King's mind.
Plus Hooper details the human characters in it so well.
Technically Terrifier 3 is fourth film. Art made his debut in All Hallow's Eve.
I was surprised by the new one, not sure if my expectations were low or what, but I loved it.
Also Blade Runner is way better than the book IMHO
I love the look of the bald, blue-skinned Nosferatu vampire. I used a very similar design for a character in my comics, but I made her a nice vampire.
Probably the creepiest vampire design ever. The front 2 teeth being curved fangs particularly make it a unique and grotesque look.

Don't forget the Shining it's an interesting curiosity to compare to Kubrick
Ok

Going to watch the original over Halloween and now a perfect companion piece to go with it. Thanks guys 🎃
The sound effect when Barlow crashes into Mark's house and kills his parents is used in Lost Boys.
really? cool trivia!
in 1972 the greatest original vampire tv movie ran "The Night Stalker" Elisha Cook jr is in that too. He locates the house.
"Face the master!" I noticed a bit of The Devil's Rain in there, too, with the whole faith-vs-faith challenge.

I was about to go to bed but then I got a notification about a new episode.. guess I'm staying up to watch it.
Just watched the original miniseries a few weeks ago and I loved it!
New one is great. Some of the scenery looks exactly as I imagined it in the book.
I wanna see them all to compare! I think they're all on Max if I'm not mistaken
We're gonna do a separate Ripe Review on it, so hold that thought!
it is not.
The new one blew my expectations away. It was better than I thought. Usually Kings remakes fall flat for some reason even though I love him and he is my favourite all time in the horror field. Barlow came to Salem's Lot to drain it dry and build an army.
Really love Lifeforce. Would dig an episode on that.
Barlow is Austrian :)
His original name was Breichen and I guess when the Anschluss happened, the Nazis started to hunt Vampires in Austria too
Ah, I was close! Thanks for watching! 🙌💚📼

Also looking forward to the book to movie comparison. Salem’s Lot is arguably my favorite King book.
The original 1979 version. There is no substitute.

Midnight Mass is the best Salem’s Lot
Midnight Mass is the best Storm of the Century.
There is a DVD from the U.K. of Salem's Lot The Movie Version titled Brennen Muss Salem.
😂
I think you'll find thats Germany as we Brits actually use the English language where it's simply 'Salem's Lot'.
Vampires were much tougher before the novels.
That was your greatest intro ever, Shawn smooth!🙂
Geez. This is like asking what's better, cherry cheesecake or fried rats with lindberger cheese?
I've never watched any of the movies, only read the book. It's a Stephen King self insert.
the 1979 version has some hokey and dated elements, but it's still much better than the Rob Lowe version. Haven't seen the latest one, but I've heard it's disappointing.
1979 - Scariest 2004- Closest to King's story - 2024 film - WTH?? Terrible!!

@ I was mostly referring to the fact that in the book he was described as a normal looking person.
While I enjoyed recent movie and 2004 TNT version NOTHING BEATS THE 1979 VERSION in my opinion of course.
The Romans used a tau cross aka "T" for crusifixion not what is shown now. Fear of crosses is the believers power not the talisman.

Vamp is a fun vampire movie
Vamp is a great one! We’ve almost covered it a few times. We’ll get there eventually.
Isn't renfield referred to as a ghoul in bram stokers
I'm late, but here nonetheless.
The book. The ‘70’s version is very dated. The new one is terrible. The book is still a classic horror read. My fav King novel.
Stephen Kings night flier is good
So good!!
When does modernization of a story backfire ?
Every Time?
The 1979 miniseries was alright for its time but I prefer the book.
