I used to only play this game. Im 54 and I havent seen this game and sound in over 40 years. OMG!!! I just watched the whole video. I can honestly say I only got to Earth and died soon after. The adrenaline I would have playing this!!! Thnx for whoever loaded this dream game of my childhood
I played this game so much when i was 15... My best arcade game! I was able to go 3 times to Earth. Able to play over 60 minutes with one coin... (25 cents) héhéhéhé
I played this when I was 13. One day on one quarter I played for over 90 minutes straight. I had at least 15 people watching me in awe. I had to leave and gave my game over to one of the spectators.....he played out all my remaining lives in about a minute 😀
My friend Paul used to be "world class" at Gyrus.... one Saturday he put a single 10p (that's English for a quarter I suppose) and played for about 12 hours.... he took a few breaks when i would stand in for him.... I was good but not as amazingly good as him and lost a fair few lives whilst he was gone but he'd just come back and earn a load more.... the game stopped when the arcade closed.... we could easily have gone on all night........ those we the days.
I have been searching high and low for this game in arcades!! I too was 13 when i used to go to circus circus in Reno Nevada with my grandparents and i would always go to the arcade and play video games and this one was my favorite!! I played and played this game until i became very good at it! I actually made it past all the planets😁 i came to watch this video on youtube just for the great memories and to heighten my skills so when i purchase this as a vintage asset ill ace it again
You really have to play this game on a cabinet to get the full experience with the music. Its incredible. The cabinet surrounds you with the soundtrack that really boosts your adrenaline. I love it.
This game was a *phenom* when it debuted. The music and whorl of activity just drew people to watch a player for the first few weeks. It was hard to get a chance to play at my local arcade initially. Once it became just another game, I played regularly and get good at it - cycle to Earth multiple times.
Takes me back to being in school and going out at dinner time to the local swimming baths and playing this ,absolutely addicted I was and when you got the highest score and you put your name up and then check it everytime to see if anyone had beat it. Ah the memories. 👍😂
I put quarters in this box to listen to the music, and to play. It was a good machine to feed :). There were only a few machines which had circular setups like this and none of them were galaga clones. I remember seeing this in 7-11. It was right next to zoo keeper. So many jolly ranchers went into those machines :( Those were good times.
When I read this game uses five separate sound chips I had to check it out. Graphically it’s a step above galaga but hooooly cow this soundtrack and the little transitions between stage clear, etc Thanks for the upload with the crazy stereo separation, this must be wild in person
Perfect play! I played it original in the 80s, and even at my Atari homecomputer I never made it to earth. Finally I know it really exists. Thanks for sharing!
This was MY arcade game as a kid. While everyone else was trying to master Defender, I was trying to master Gyruss. My wrist hurts just from watching this.
D*** I just got chills listening to the tune. The music for this video game was so ahead of its time . I forgot how techno that song really was. The amount of quarters that I dropped in that baby wow.
first played this during the last day of school before Christmas Vacation in 1984. I was maybe 14. in that time was blown away by the forward moving space ship and warping to planets. most games like "Defender" were always before seen from the side, not forward. in those days that is what you call "3D Graphics" music in this original Atari rocked! NES version a bit softer. this was the edgy version I loved to play after school in the local arcade near our school! spent quite a few lunch moneys on it!
I don't thnk I've seen this is over 40 years LOL This is THE GOAT! I wanna be 10 years old again at the Boys Club with a STACK of Quarters in my pocket. THE WARP STAGE LITERALLY ACTIVATING GOOSE BUMPS! I gotta find this arcade cabinet and stick it in the garage lol
This game was at my local Pizza Hut in the early 80’s...dropped many quarters in this thing! Also had a very cool jukebox there, dropped many quarters in there, too. What a great time to be alive! Went there after football games on Friday nights and hung out til they ran us out of there. 80’s=golden
I loved this game so much that I would spend my weekly lunch money allotment on it. I had to go hungry for the rest of the week but it was worth it. This game was also at a movie theater I went to regularly and I would show up 1 to 1 1/2 hrs before the movie start time and sometimes play almost up until the time for the movie to start. I miss those days. I wish they could bring it back. I'm fixing to turn 56 but I would feel like a teenager if I got an opportunity to play it again
I used to play the heck out of it as a kid. I would get a dollar from my mom while she went shopping at the swap meet. I got so good that I had only wasted one quarter by the time she was done shopping. I would save up those quarters to eventually buy albums on cassette. Coffee shop two blocks away from my house has this game on their multi game cabinet. I still did decent on this game for an old guy.
I wish Gyruss could be released on modern consoles especially Nintendo Switch. The guy who created this game went on to create another well known game Street Fighter. And both games are still worth paying over and over again all these years after.
I remember the one time I made it to earth twice on one coin and broke 1million in points. no one could touch that high score and eventually they had to reset the machine to get rid of it. I was Zen that day. no one could believe what they were seeing few people could make it earth once, but once i got past it and kept going, the buzz starting going around the arcade and slowly more and more of the kids started coming and watching me play, by the time i was finished the whole arcade was standing around watching and cheering me including the guy working at the change desk.
About time someone did a longplay of arcade Gyruss! My favorite all time game, along with the FDS/NES version (which is a somewhat different game with the same concept).
The entire solar system is being attacked by the vicious Gyrusians, and it's up to you to save the day! You will need to fly your spaceship to each of the nine planets and then clear three stages of enemies to rid that planet of the Gyrusians. You start the game with a single cannon, but can gain a double cannon after shooting a power up satellite. After clearing each planet, there is another bonus stage where additional weapons and bonus points can be collected. Gyruss is an arcade action shooter, however instead of piloting your spaceship horizontally or vertically, you move in a circle around the perimeter of the screen. The NES version of Gyruss adds to the original arcade version additional music, additional weapons, new enemies, and a large boss at the end of each level. Gyruss was remade for the Family Computer Disk System in Japan, and later the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America, released by Konami's subsidiary Ultra Games. These versions include several major revisions. The player can use a super phaser attack in addition to the normal guns, which cost energy There are additional enemies, including boss fights when the player reaches each planet Bonus stages after each planet's boss is defeated, for a chance to gain additional powerups There is a definite ending to the game. In the NES version, it's a brief text about the Universe being at peace. In the FDS version, there is a full ending sequence with credits. In addition to the satellites providing the usual double guns and bonus points, they can also provide extra phasers, a smart bomb, and even an extra life Instead of the arcade's 24 stages, there are 39, including Venus, Mercury, and the Sun. The player can enter the Konami code at the title screen for extra lives, but it must be entered in reverse (A-B-A-B-right-left-right-left-down-down-up-up).
All the time I’ve played this game I never made it to Earth and now I see what it’s like! I think Jupiter was as far as I ever made it. I think this game was set in cheat mode, though.
my dad and I used to love this game RIP dad I miss you very much
Galaga was the most well known space game but Gyruss was good along with Phoenix and Moon Cresta
2,300,000 pts. my high score. Game rooms, coins, cigarettes, and...really other times!
Awwww, buddy.
My highest was 5,500,000. Took me almost 7 hrs
@@danlivni2097 Zaxxon too!
The music of this game is absolutely awesome.
*****
The c64 Version tops em all for sure.
All versions of this theme are fantastic xP
Listen to the "original" that inspired the composer: "Toccata" by Sky. Never heard such a great version of the old J.S.Bach classic :-)
Was taken also years later by Muse in the song Plug in baby !
I searched for this on TH-cam mostly for the music.
DUDE YES! Boys Club memories ACTIVATED!
The music, the sound effects, the alien ships, the cool fighter spaceship.
This game was next level..
The ONLY game remotely close to this on the satisfaction scale....BLOWING UP THE DEATH STAR ON OG VECTOR STAR WARS.
one of the few stand ups id buy without question in any condition
Stand up sticks are so unresponsive. I was about to buy an Arcade 1-UP of Pac-Man, but the I had to input movements a half a second before doing hem.
This was BY FAR my favorite arcade game back in the 80s. I miss it so much
I played this game so much when i was 15... My best arcade game! I was able to go 3 times to Earth. Able to play over 60 minutes with one coin... (25 cents) héhéhéhé

Nice throwback memory hombre. 💪
I had the experience with Bosconian! What a brilliant game! Congratulations on the best memories of the best life ever. Maybe we'll get it back.

it surely did
Oh hell yes it did, was amazing it they had the sound cranked up

Plot Twist: You play the alien on the way to destroy Earth and you're blowing up Earth's defenses.

Such great use of stereo audio.

Ah... Zoo Keeper. There was another under appreciated arcade game.
Omg zoo keeper. I haven't thought about that in years. Bubbles was another old school favorite of mine.
What were the other games with circular setups?
@@aaaaaaaaooooooo there was Tempest, and there was STAR CASTLE! Star Castle was a lot of fun.
I was addicted to this game in my late teens. This brings back some very good memories

I love both the arcade and NES versions. Great games with awesome soundtrack. Thanks for this longplay.
You are a Gyruss god ! TYVM for FINALLY letting me get to see Earth after Mars. I can now die a HAPPY man... :)
My favourite game ever. I was 11 when I first played it. So many good memories.
Gurus was ahead of its time.
It's Gyruss.
I remember hanging out at the arcade and watch others play and compete I feel like a pioneer. Miss the 80s in NYC.
There one thing I like about this game: this Background music is an 8-bit version of toccata and fugue in d minor.
Is that Toccata And Fugue in d minor in the beginning xD? nice to see that in arcade games!
+SailorNeptune Yes it most certainly is, I've yet to hear a better remix of the classical piece either.
One of my favorite games, the music reminds me of the Dutch band Ekseption with their Toccata version.
2 warps to Neptune. Nice vacation planet, there!

Yes beloved it really exist because i was fortunate to finally make it to EARTH😁
@@sheilabryant4594 You saved us! Make earth great again!
For some reason this game was seen in a lot of 7/11 stores in the 80's.
Galaga in a tube to a prog rock soundtrack - classic!

Toccata & Fugue in D Minor. Bach. My Favorite Video Game ever. 🎉
Playing this in the background like it's a really long 40 year old techno song
Great gameplay, Schlauchi! Got almost 8 mln. points while playing on my Konami Arcade Classics Collection.

This game absolutely amazed when I was a kid. The graphics and music was just out of this world.
One of my favorite arcade cabs/games of all Time! The music ( Soundtrack) is Chef’s Kiss 😚 and close to the greatest of arcade music of all Time! 😎
It's been 40 years and the audio of this game is still mind blowing
God, they attempted 3d with 2d sprites. It's gorgeous! Way to go, Konami!
This was very high quality for 1983!
Wow, this gave me nostalgic goosebumps to the max!

Oh man, I remember this game... Even at the time I thought it never achieved the popularity it deserved. GG
I still play this at Arcade club Manchester, bit rusty now though been a 52 year old fat bloke.
You have an actual arcade machine you can play? Lucky duck.

Wow I've been trying to figure out the name of this game for years 🙏I just reverted back to my childhood favorites 😁
Never expected to hear Toccata & Fugue in this game.
This was the first upright arcade machine I bought for my home arcade. Has the original side art paint and still plays excellent.
Great memories of playing this at 7-Eleven. Thanks for posting.
Playing this on my atgames ultimate cab. The sound alone is fantastic!!!
Meu jogo preferido. Obrigado pela lembrança
awesome game clocked the game for 2hours. when I was 13.
I liked what they did for the home computer market best of all. First time we saw really good arcade games at home with the Stampers
It felt like high-pressure 3D space invaders! With excellent music, of course!
Thank You so much! I feel the arcade and remember where I'd stand and play this. :D
Um dos melhores de todos os tempos. Obrigado.

One of my favorites back in the day. Could play for a couple hours on 1 quarter.
GYRUSS 40TH ANNIVERSARY 1983-2023!
After all these years it’s no wonder I love Breakcore
This game is what the love child of Galaga and Tempest would look like...
The classical music riffs are awesome.
3:53 and it makes a familiar sound too.
GTA: San Andreas has a minigame inspired by this one called "They Crawled from Uranus" 🤣
"PLEASE DEPOSIT COIN AND TRY THIS GAME" very polite. XP
Am I the only one who thought the pellets being shot at your ship were candy corn?
My favorite arcade game of all time.
It would have been so cool to be the organist who the makers of this listened to. To have your interpretation for ever in a game is so cool.
You mean Johann Sebastian Bach? Well, his Toccata & Fugue in D Minor, on which this game's music is based, is over 300 years old.
Just played this game for the first time today on a real cabinet. I love the gameplay being a hybrid between Tempest and Galaga.
I was a master at this game. With one quarter , I had the game on lock for as long as I wanted.
3 Warps to Uranus was a popular rental when adult video stores were a thing...
This game is so awesome

Wow, they managed to design this circular setup back in 1983? I can only say this game is totally tubular.
This game was played a lot on Starcade.
Yep, and that show aired every Saturday at 5:30pm on WDRB in the Louisville area!
Perfection! :)
I spent$300 on this game at Boblo Island in 85....maaannnnn..those were the good ol days.
