I member playing this for hours at a time way back in the old 80's car garage turned den when on the Atari 2600 and playing around with the old Tandy computer my father had from Radio Shack. I couldn't always go to the arcade to play it, elementary and middle school got in the way too much, but playing Gyruss on the 2600 was the next best thing. Gyruss and Galaxian were 2 space shooters that were pretty faithful Atari 2600 ports from the arcade coin-op versions. Those were good times indeed. Lol

I rented this game for NES when I was a kid and fell in love with it. I saved up my money and purchased a copy along with an NES Max controller because I thought the disk shaped pad would work well with Gyruss. It wasn't until later that I got a chance to see and play the game in an arcade on vacation and saw it's roots. Thanks so much for highlighting this shooter gem from the 80's!

I'm actually friends with "Kim kanonarm" he would do world record attempts at the arcade bar I used to work at. Very friendly and extremely laid back.
I also own that "Cannon Arm" documentary on DVD and even watched it in the theater with the guy during a special showing. (I even appear in the background at some point)
The whole place was packed :)
The documentary is mostly in Danish though and I know many people aren't too fond of reading subs.
    The movie/Documentary still come recommended.

Gyruss was a sensation at my local arcade. People would crowd around just to watch someone play it, at first. After a month or so, it settled down to being "just another game in the arcade" and I put lots of tokens into it, learning to play all the patterns and reach Earth again and again!

I was down the Jersey Shore for a week the summer Gyrus was released. I was spending most of my time, and money, at the boardwalk arcades. My favorite was the one which gave 5 tokens for a dollar. I journeyed on to the next arcade and saw Gyrus for the first time. It was MOBBED with kids 2 or 3 deep watching the player wipe the screen clean of enemies to their cheers. I could barely see over the shoulders of the other kids to get a good gander. Boy, was I impressed! I wanted so badly to play but there was no way I would ever get a chance. Gyrus never showed up anywhere in my hometown, though arcades and machines were everywhere. Thanks to the 90's and the MAME emulator, I played for the first time to my heart's content. Good times.

I first played this on the 2600 before I ever got to play the arcade (my dad bought it for me & my brother.) There were only three places in my town (that I knew) that had the Arcade they were Aladdin's Castle (briefly there) Fun City (also briefly there), and in the Basement at Sparks Hospital (in the vending machine dining hall) that one was there for decades until they renovated it in the mid 2000's, and got rid of all the arcades including Street Fighter 2, Time Soldiers, and Escape From the Planet Of The Robot Monsters. As I have stated many times before, I am 47 and grew up in the arcades., and I played Gyruss quite regularly. Strangely enough, the classical music fit with the gameplay perfectly. My first home version of this game was in cartridge form for my Atari 800XL computer and it was published by Parker Brothers. Then when it was released for the NES under Konami's secondary publishing company Ultra Games, I had to get it. Also, I am not too sure how many of you out there know this, but the NES version has a 30-life code. It is the "Konami Code" backward. A B, R, L, R, L, D, D, U, U. The reason Konami started releasing games under the "Ultra Games" label is due to Nintendo's strict policy that a company could NOT publish more than 5 games in a year. So not only did Konami create a secondary label, but a few other companies did as well. They did this so they could circumvent Nintendo's policy and release 10 games per year.

I pumped a lot of quarters into this game back in the day. I still play it a lot on my Raspberry Pi. I could listen to the soundtrack of this game all day long. I'm not a big fan of the NES version. I have that version on a "plug n play" joystick and the game gets near impossible once you get to Mercury because the game puts "troll" enemies in the corners of all 4 quadrants and you start to burn through lives really quick. Even if you have a lot of lives built up from playing flawlessly through the rest of the game, once you get to Mercury, you won't have a lot of lives for very long. But the arcade version of Gyruss is a masterpiece.

Tempest meets Galaga, a perfect combo and a lot of fun to play! Just wish I could more easily transfer to the other half of the circle

And once again, Patman QC makes me aware of a sweet port of a game. So $5 later, I finally downloaded Gyruss on Xbox 360. LOL. Also, this video has corrected my lifelong error of pronouncing this game as “Guy-Russ”. Keep up the AMAZING videos, Pat!!!!

I saw a retro commercial where it was pronounced guy- Russ but then the one I used they pronounced it the way I always knew. Have fun with the 360 version

Always look forward to your videos. Probably my favorite video game youtuber. Nothing better than winding down after work with a Patman QC video and spending time with the family. Thanks for creating another awesome arcade history lesson.

Finally someone who can pronounce the name the correct way! It's one of my all-time favorite games, but all the ytubers seems to want to call it Guy-Russ, or Gihruss with hard-G's.

Strangely, this is the first time I've heard "tube shooter", we always called 'em "spin shooters"
