Man.... this game takes me back to when I was a young kid the 80's. At that time, I lived near downtown in my city. The only place in that area that had a _'Phoenix'_ arcade machine was the old Greyhound bus terminal. My cousin, my friends and I used to go in there to play this game, along with a few others that they had like _'Galaxian',_ _'Moon Patrol',_ _'Defender',_ _'Galaga'_ and _'Vanguard'._ So many good memories of riding around on our "BMX" bikes, pooling our money together and buying sodas, candy, STAR WARS trading cards, stealing kisses from girls we liked and saving quarters for video games at local shops. Throwing caution to the wind and just letting the moment take us wherever it did. Some of the best times I ever had in my entire life, with old friends, now long gone. So glad I spent most of my childhood in the late 70's and all of the 80's. There will never be magical days like those ever again... Awesome video upload here... Thanks for the much-needed trip down memory lane, bittersweet as it was/is...
River Of Blacklights Awesome story man! Youll never get time back so just enjoy the moment and keep those fond memories. Wish I could've grown up in the 80s :)
I experienced more or less the same things you did, what a fun time it was! I remember coming from school back in 1981 and hearing about this new arcade nearby so me and my friends went there, the first thing I heard was the haunting soundtrack of Phoenix! I had to play it!
Wow 😂 As a son of the 70's this brings me back to the good old days of gaming. Galaga, Phoenix, 1942 were among other (shooting) games my favorites 👍🏼🕹
My two favorite games, Phoenix and Frogger, I actually owned a two player Space Invaders game, a Japanese version, it accommodated 2 chairs and was a table type game.
This was one of my go to arcade games in the 80s. Funny Galaxian and even Galaga were already out but I preferred this game because of its unique elements. It had those giant birds and even a mothership level. The gameplay was a bit more rough around the edges but it was ahead of it's time. When you have played a lot of arcade games some of the most obscure and lesser known titles are personal favorites.
I'll add Slush Puppies, Hubba Bubba, pizza parlors, and smoke from that cool kid who'd put his cigarette on the machine and burn the plastic. I saw Duran Duran just a couple weeks ago. They still rock.
I found this game hard when i was a child prefering galaga or xevious with longer game for one coin. But know i'm very pleased to play it again more than galaga. Hey, i never tried to shoot all the defense of the big boss vessel. I thought he will never stop going down. Thanks to you, i'll try. Great game !
When an arcade game can make your ears burn like red hot coal, you know for certain you are completely immersed in it. For me, Phoenix was that game. Best arcade game of the 80's!
I used to watch only the intro on the console when i was a little boy, because i didn't have any money for the game ;) That was in an "Imbissbude" in Germany. Thx for sharing 👍
loved this game! the sound of the ship blasting away at the mothership piece by piece is ingrained in my head! lol couldnt remember the name of it and out of nowhere i remembered
From the Phoenix Wiki - "A secret bonus on the arcade original only occurs during the first stage, which involves the player shooting three Phoenixes flying away at a diagonal within only two seconds, which nets a 200,000 point bonus" I did this once by a freak chance and was stunned. Totally broke my concentration, and I lost shortly after. Never repeated. 😆
@Flavum "The secret bonus" is a bug that automatically adjusts to 204k. If the score is below the 204k it's a nice little cheat to boost it up, the caveat, the score will drop back down to 204k if above the score. 14:55 the score boosts up and 17:52 it goes down, the guy playing it obviously knows how it works. Back in the day, I knew the bug worked when the score was below 204k but didn't know about the caveat. I was at 500k+ when the score reset to 204k. I nearly kicked the crap of the arcade machine lol.
I love this game. I used to go to a swimming pool to learn to swim at a local hotel. And they had in the reception one of the sitdown coffee table versions. 10p ago. I’ve put £75 million in it in 1980 alone. I loved it
EPIC classic arcade game! One of the first multi-stage shooters with a legitimate Boss battle. Pumped a lot of quarters into this game back in the arcade golden age.
I loved this game so so much. we had a little bar nearby. There was a pinball, billiard, musicbox and one of this brilliant phoenix arcade cocktail style table. Everyday i took my fathers wallet and took some money out to go playing. it was so cool....but than i father noticed it and he gave me a lot of.....ouch my arse 😂😂😂😂😂 but it was the best time of my life. i miss it so so so much. thx for this video.
I would like to see an arcade1up machine with a lot of these great but lesser known video games like this and Pleiads, Cosmic Avenger, ladybug, Mr do, Locomotion, Zookeeper, Qix, Vanguard, Jungle Hunt, Food Fight, Crazy Climber, Astroblaster, space fury, reactor, Tac/Scan, Zaxxon, Congo bongo, Nibbler, iRobot, etc.
Interestingly, this game’s sound hardware utilized the sound chip from an electronic musical doorbell!! This fascinates me, because chiptune music was originally invented for video games, then people realized that solid state sound chips were a good replacement for mechanical music box mechanisms and invented pre-programmed melody chips for use in things like ice cream trucks and cheap electronic musical appliances. Then we came full circle by using a low-cost melody chip in this game!!! This all happened in only the course of 5 years.
I remember the first time I played this game on an arcade machine - it was a cocktail table version in a pizza restaurant, it may not have been an official build by Centuri because it had a 2-way joystick to move the ship left or right, the Fire & Force Field buttons were smaller and the Force Field button was actually labeled as “Barrier”.
I played this game at an arcade in Colorado Springs. I found (by accident) that if you had a static charge from the carpet when the token touched the coin plate, it registered as a credit. This became the most cost-effective video game I ever played.
My record was 254 300 in 1983 in Hungary - in Győr. Supposedly it would have been a world record if the arcade owner had sent it to Taito.. Phoenix was my speciality and galaxyan. In the beginning I put all my pocket money into the machine. In the end I played all afternoon with one coin, spinning through the tracks dozens of times. Then I gave it to someone and watched it run out of lives in 20 seconds. It was a kind of meditation when it was going well. Now I play the most authenic version on iPad, which is 95% in behaviour, but light years away from the original in responsiveness.
The game was actually developed by Taito. The sounds are produced with discrete digital logic timed by a 555. The melody is generated by an off-the-shelf melody ASIC which differed between the Amstar/Centuri and Taito releases- the Amstar/Centuri releases used an MM6221AA.
I remember a similar arcade game, but unfortunately not the name, where at times there'd be a robot below your spaceship that moved from side to side and would shoot up an arrow. If it hit you, you'd loose a life.
14:56 and 17:52 MamePlayer obviously knows the 204k score adjustment bug. I used to live on this machine back in the '80s. My PB was 847320 (crazy how I remember the score) w/o the bug. There's another bug/glitch that I only saw one time. Something to do with all points being tripled/quadrupled? It's the only time I broke the 1 million barrier but I didn't count it as a genuine score.
Here is something you never do with this game when the birds are flying up with wings extended never shoot four or more flying in tight formation or you will mess up your game and I don't think un plugging it for so many hours will fix it. just an FYI . 2:31
Phoenix is one of the greatest arcade games of all-time!
A true classic!
and the sound is balancing calming
@@Buz-Lunch-Punx oof
It's overshadowed by it's Galaga trilogy succcessors and in my mind it's a better game in several ways.
Phoenix was an awesome game.
1979 to 1983 was an amazing time to be a kid and play all these arcade games
Back when Chuck E Cheese was more fun than going to Disneyland. At least I thought so.
arcades ftw
And going to any bowling alley that was open.. man I really did grow up in a good time
I really enjoyed bowling and pool as a Teen.

Exactly true . Same era of my youth same situation ☆☆☆☆☆☆ gracias for memories same

Got that right fellow Phoenician !
I played one in a circle K
I remember playing this game in the arcades all the time as a kid
Wow 😂

Galaga, Phoenix, 1942 were among other (shooting) games my favorites 👍🏼🕹
It's amazing hearing the sound of this game immediately makes me remember this game. (From 1981-ish).
One of the great arcade games of the early 80's. Put so many 10p's in the machine. The Atari 2600 conversion was very good too.
Yes agree, very good arcade game. The Atari 2600 version is excellent, I still play it on the Atari 2600 as I have working woody 6 switcher 2600.
King fu master was the greatest arcade game of all time
@@Roscoe.P.ColdchainDefender up there.

REAL GAMES NOT LIKE THE ONES TODAY
KRAP
I loved the whole aspect of having to take out the Mothership -- that is what made this game so much better than Galaxian + Galaga
I was baby and i remeber at 1983 watcing oldest kids to play it for hours...thx for the upload..so many memories
UTTER CLASSIC what great times the 80s no phones etc ❤️
I had forgotten about Phoenix but a soon as the video started it brought me back to age 16. A fantastic game.
A la epoca de colegio 😊
This was one merciless game. One of the most difficult of the kind
Classic arcade games! 80's was a great time to be a kid! Duran Duran on the stereo, gulping Coke with pop rocks and spending time with friends.
I'll add Slush Puppies, Hubba Bubba, pizza parlors, and smoke from that cool kid who'd put his cigarette on the machine and burn the plastic.
I saw Duran Duran just a couple weeks ago. They still rock.

I had no idea that Phoenix was made here in Phoenix, AZ! Makes sense, but wow!
I remember playing this at the local movie theater as a kid. Definitely an underrated classic.
Yes, one of the earliest games but also one of the best ...🔥🔥
When an arcade game can make your ears burn like red hot coal, you know for certain you are completely immersed in it. For me, Phoenix was that game. Best arcade game of the 80's!
Great game! They had this in the bar at my dad's rugby club in Croxley Green (UK), I loved it.
I used to watch only the intro on the console when i was a little boy, because i didn't have any money for the game ;)
That was in an "Imbissbude" in Germany.
Thx for sharing 👍
I wish I could go back then!
Me too. All we'd have to do is run around the world backwards really fast.😁😉
Believe it or not, I used to play this game when I was 2 years old. I am Taiwanese, and this is the beginning of my life of gaming!
I had beautiful memories with this game.
loved this game! the sound of the ship blasting away at the mothership piece by piece is ingrained in my head! lol couldnt remember the name of it and out of nowhere i remembered
Loved this game, was crap at it but stil played it...lol
One off my alltime favourites! This player is a legand!!I couldn't get past the second base ship..but I was about 10!! Nostalgia! Luv it
Can’t reach second base? Sounds an awful lot like my love life 😒
Early 80s had this Traveller RPG interstellar sci-fi vibe everywhere. I love it. Sci-fi was just better back in the days.

Ein Fantastischer Klassiker.
Happy I have this classic on my phone!! 2022!!

This game and the bootleg version, "Condor", took many quarters from me in the early 1980's.
um dos melhores jogos que já joguei nos fliperamas! 1984
Cool play. 😎 Bring back memories...❤
Another great arcade game I loved.👍
Brings back memories for sure !
Haven't seen old Phoenix in many years. It's not my favorite, but this brought back some memories.
A masterpiece of the 80's with
" Juex Interdits "(Forbidden Games)
and " Für Elise " (For Elise) as memorable music !!
One of my favorite games of the late 70s and early 80s
I could play for hours this game. I remember a made score 950 000
one of my childhood favorites...crazy gameplay man....my highscore in 2024 so far is like 12000 😂🤣
Great arcade memories
Great times!! :-)

The best "scoot 'n' shoot" game of the Golden Age. Still amazing!
This is pre-Timezone memories for me. This is the one machine in the milk bar type of game.
I got this game on my Taito Legends compilation for PlayStation 2. Published by Empire Interactive, Released by SEGA in the U.S. in 2005.
This and Pleiades were great.
Epic! Thanks for the memories!
Que nostalgia de este juego, en el chimbote de los 80, estaba en todas las salas de pinboll.. !!
I remember playing this game at the local arcade around 1980 or early 1981.
The base ship is visually similar to the Comet Empire in Star Blazers
One of the first games I remember to have different levels.
And one of the first to have a boss?
Always was at the fairground in the UK in the 80s 😊
Recuerdos de mi infancia cuando me escapaba del colegio para ir a jugar símbolo.

A very good game very well played!
Not well played. The player was way to risky playing. I think he wants to appear real cool and not play for new high scores.
I can smell the swimming baths watching this. Good times
