Pickup Upgrade for Jackson JS-12 Dinky (Making a great guitar awesome!)

  • In this video, I finally answer my question about inexpensive guitars: Is it worth upgrading the electronics? Can a "player" guitar become a "sleeper"? I decided to find out by swapping out the stock Jackson pickups for the quintessential "Hot-rodded humbuckers" pair of Seymour Duncan humbuckers. In addition, I took advantage of Duncan's four conductor wiring scheme to add a coil split functionality to each pickup, giving me even more tonal options. The results are, quite frankly, spectacular, and now this guitar is probably the most versatile I have.

    I've been playing guitar for over 40 years . When I was a sophomore in high school there was this guy in California that built custom guitars to order and his name was Grover Jackson. At the time a new American made strat ran about $350-$450 and a Gibson Les Paul was about $550 and up . I worked part time after work and mowed lawns until I saved up just enough to order a Ferrari Red Strat with a 24 fret maple neck with a maple fretboard and an original Floyd rose and 1 Volume control with one Humbucker and it was $1,200. I was the only kid in my high school that had a USA Jackson and man I would about trade my house to have that exact guitar back . Lowest action ever and everyone I let play it offered to buy it ! Now all these years later I have a few import Jackson's (JS32,JS34 and a Dinky pro) an LTD and a couple I built from parts and pieces . My number one instrument is a $299 JS32 with stock pickups. Not even close to being the most costly ...but for me ..... it's perfect ! And I wouldn't even consider changing the stock pickups ! They sound great !

      It depends. I didn't like how dark they sounded. The upgrade really opened up the sound and made it less dark and everything from chords to single notes has more definition and clarity, even at higher overdrive levels.

      They are frichen HOT. Mine are reading 8.5 and 15.98 through the jack. Im about to swap a 13.5k A5 into it, to see if it'll tighten up a little. Because while they do have all the gain, they're really flat and kind of murky.

      I thought those were good until a got a pair of active emgs (specifically the 57 in the neck and 66 in the bridge)in my 8 string. Honestly 10 times better. Has so much more clarity but also packs a serious punch even with a tight noise gate. Honestly surprised to say this but the neck pickup somehow sounds better than the single coil neck pickup on my strat with a clean tone too.

    these 'inexpensive guitars' are already pretty damn awesome..!!. just got myself a Jackson Dinky (second one i've owned) pickups are decent in these..... not as rich in tone as my Fender USA or a Les Paul or something? these will do..!!.. i am thinking of upgrading the pickups....but the resonance of a guitar body and its wood makes a lot of difference too.....if an electric guitar sounds good unplugged ? like you can feel the sound thru the body? then thats a good sign for me...... a lot of guitars have great design and tech in them ..pickups etc..... but they dont resonate as good in the wood ( 'the guitar') itself..... This Jackson does resonate......so its good to play unplugged aswell..

    I purchased a left-handed JS 32 about 2 years ago and I liked the stock bridge pickup but wanted something with a little bit more balls... first I swapped it for a JB but found that the stock Jackson pups actually had more clarity in the low end and this video seems to demonstrate this as well.. the JB alnico 5 magnet makes it a bit flubby on the low end.. on the other hand I swapped it for a Seymour Duncan Distortion tb6 pickup and that is exactly what the guitar needed. Personally I believe there's better neck pickups out there than the Duncan jazz as well, I personally go with a 59. It's easy to get caught up spending money on big names like duncan's.. guitar fetish GFS pickups are really freaking good as well, actually I like gfs's paf pickups better than duncan's.. their VEH pick up is freaking awesome.

      Absolutely. As I mentioned in a previous comment, the stock Jackson pickups are great for metal and hard rock, and if that's all I played I would have left it as-is. But, because I do many different styles, the Duncans were a better option for me even if they're not as aggressive.

    I wouldn't go out and buy a set of pickups for this thing. But if you have plenty of spare guitar parts laying around, this makes a great modding platform. I bought one for my son a couple of years ago and was pleasantly surprised with the quality. It was the natural finish, or maybe I should say "no finish", I sanded it down and clear coated it. Put some spare SD's and pots in it, sounded and played great.

    • @fernfawkes
      @fernfawkes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think buying this guitar with the express purpose of upgrading the pickups is a feasible option. For under $400 you can have something that plays and sounds like the exact same guitar with the exact same pickups (some higher end Dinky models), just installed in the factory, but costing over $600. In a question of simple economics, putting in the time and labor to swap out the pickups is definitely worth the ROI.

    Just for playability, what would you change? I got the JS11 for my nephew and was thinking about upgrading the machine heads for tuning stability. Pickup tones won't matter to him as a beginner, but staying in tune will. Which tuning pegs are the best choice? Obviously, Graph Tech would be better, but probably not worth the price for an inexpensive guitar. I was thinking Wilkinsons. Any thoughts? For a new player, I'm thinking machines and maybe a new nut and blocking the tremolo bridge.

    • @fernfawkes
      @fernfawkes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, the stock tuners are quite good. I believe they're a 12-1 ratio and are very stable. I've never swapped out the ones on mine and they have stayed in tune really well. So new machines are not necessary. Same with the nut, the stock nut is actually very good and very well made. Lastly on the bridge, I don't really like blocking the bridge on guitars--there's a reason it's there and if you didn't want a vibrato bridge then get a hard tail. If a bridge is set up properly, it will be just as stable as a blocked bridge.

      Sorry for the delay. I'm sorry your particular guitar is dreadful. The JS32 is two tiers above mine and I've almost NEVER seen something with issues in that range. There's always exceptions, and unfortunately yours might just be a factory dud. What exactly is dreadful? Almost anything can be fixed unless it's a fretboard problem or neck alignment (in comparison to the body, like the neck pocket being badly routed or the neck itself being twisted). I'd defintely wait until you can be sure any issue with your guitar can be corrected (like I said, 95% of the time it CAN be) and improved. Otherwise, use the upgrades on something you already know plays great.

      Lol no, not nuts. The stock Jackson pickups are voiced to be aggressive and somewhat mid-scooped. Honestly, for metal/hard rock players, they might just be the perfect pickups. I like the Seymour Duncan option I went with because of its versatility, both in the voicing between pickups as well as the coil split option. Not everyone will completely like it, but for what I do, it's perfect.

    the 2nd most important question is what was the total investment cost? Did you actually save any money buying the cheap guitar and making it like an expensive guitar?

    • @fernfawkes
      @fernfawkes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I spent about $150 on the guitar, and about $150 on the pickups. I had spare pots, caps, wire, etc. so although I didn't spend on that, the cost would be around $20 for other miscellany. So, total investment on this guitar, as it stands, is around $300, but less than $350 if you buy all new pots, caps, switch, and wiring. I don't know of any other guitars in the $300 range that have, 1. Seymour Duncan pickups, 2. push-pull pot to split said pickups, 3. upgraded pots and electronics. With a full setup and fresh NYXL strings, yeah, I'd say a $350 investment for a guitar with appointments found only in $500-$600+ guitars that plays and sounds like a much more expensive guitar, is totally worth it. By comparison, the first (cheapest) model above this I found by Jackson with Seymour Duncan pickups (but no coil split function) was the X Series Soloist SLX for about $820.

      @@JdmMikeTx I'll tell you exactly what I used on mine, but honestly, any electronics-grade insulated wire (copper) around 16 or 18 ga. will work (EDIT: I have since found out 18 ga. is too thick for a lot of pots. 22 ga. wire is perfect), as well as any brand of pots. CTS is a very good choice. Resistance will be determined by your pickup type. Generally speaking, humbuckers do better with 500 K pots, while single coils will do better with 250 K pots. Generally, lol. You can easily use 1 Meg (1 MOhm, Megaohms, or 1,000 K--you'll never see it written this way, though) with humbuckers, too. Also, remember that generally your tone circuit needs a capacitor, but what value to use is a discussion that's outside the scope of this comment. I'll try to provide a self-learning resource you can use on this subject.

      Always love criticism from guys with 20 subs. :D I majored in music theory and composition, and have been playing for over 20 years. A few takeaways:
      1. This isn't a show-off video. I purposely tried to keep it super simple and wasn't focused on crisp technique. I was more concerned about getting the best sound out of the pickups, which is also why I'm using a stripped down rig. But if you really want something to judge my guitar playing by, go to www.reverbnation.com/facingthefuries
      2. My playing and touring days are over ever since I broke my left hand in a biking accident. I've been able to keep playing, thank God, but obviously with some limitations as I still don't have full range of motion on my left hand. I don't let it bother me, though, because I am extremely grateful to still be able to pick up a guitar, but it obviously bothers you.
      3. Even though my left hand range of motion, dexterity, and endurance is very limited, my knowledge and experience in music, performance, theory, and teaching hasn't diminished. I don't think my students are negatively affected by my minor handicap, especially considering most of them are straight up beginners. I just have to be better than them. ;)
      4. As far as intonation, well, what can I say. I tuned to a Petersen strobe prior to recording this, but it IS a $179 guitar with a stock bridge. The fact that it stayed in tune that long is pretty impressive. But, this wasn't the focus of the video, the pickups were. I guess I'll understand if you don't want lessons with me. ;)
      5. If you don't know the full context, try not to be a dick.
