      You would like the song hang on sloopy. Most people messed up the title by calling it hang on snoopy. Its one of the Greats!.

    • @IONATVS
      @IONATVS 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Joseph Murphy TBF to people who mess up “Hang On Sloopy”’s title, there were some major ad campaigns for the theme park chain with the rights to the Peanuts characters (The Cedar Fair parks, I think?Knott’s Berry Farm was the one near me) that parodied the song as “Hang On Snoopy” in the 90s, well after the original had dropped off the air. So a whole generation heard the parody and thought it was the original.

    • @Uriahjw
      @Uriahjw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@IONATVS oh yeah I'm aware of that. There was another song like that one as well in which they thought it was one thing and it was another. If I can remember the song I will share it. But I do remember as a kid in the 70's that most people around me called the song hang on snoopy. Not even looking at the record to see the actual name.

    I was a youngster when this song first hit the airwaves, and it hit me hard. I cried and felt pain in my heart...and I will always remember that. That's why, to this day, I think it's probably my favorite Four Seasons song. So many other great songs, though! The Four Seasons are just so amazing; a prolific, American classic group.

    "Rag Doll" is regarded by some as the greatest achievement of the Four Seasons. Gaudio (piano, songwriter, vocals) was on the way to a recording session and his car was stopped at a long traffic light in Hell's Kitchen. Often kids would wash the car windows during the long waits and ask for some change. In Gaudio's case, a scruffy little girl washed his window. When Gaudio went to give her change, all he had was a $20 bill. After a moment's hesitation, he gave her the bill because he had to give her something. The astonished look on her face stayed with him and inspired the subsequent song. ~ Wikipedia

    When u comment about the song being short this was the era of AM radio and records 33 1/3 & 45s. It wasnt til the 70s that FM radio came about . "Short songs were for AM and "album cuts" were FM. Watching you reacting to these great songs makes me realize we had the best music ever.

      Billy Joel has a song called “The Entertainer “ which has a line about his song that took him years to write but the studio just wants him to cut it down to 3:05. That’s the way things worked back then

    Bob Gaudio, who was a member of the Four Seasons, also wrote/co-wrote many of their hit songs, Rag Doll came about while Bob was in New York at a stop light. A girl in tattered clothes came out while Bob was waiting for the stop light to change, and washed his windshield. That encounter was what encouraged him to write the song. Rag Doll went to #1 on the Billboard charts, one of the rare American groups to get a number one during the time of the British Invasion.

    Try the B side of this, Silence is Golden.
    Most of the Four Seasons hits were written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio. Crewe went on to write tons of hits for other musicians. Including "Lady Marmalade".
    Even before Crewe joined the Four Seasons, he wrote a big hit, "Silhouettes", which was recorded by The Rays. After the Four Seasons, he joined disco band Disco Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes.

    Such a beautiful song and thank you for your review. This song happens to be one of the biggest hits of 1964 and the bands 4th number 1 hit in less then two years. To think that when rolling stone magazine came out a few years back with the top 500 greatest songs recorded, not one Valli or 4 Seasons song made it on that list. The 4 Seasons are the first American band to have three number 1 hit songs in a row, played their own instruments and wrote their own songs before The Beach Boys and Beatles.

    We used to learn old time dancing at High School and most of the guys were shy, so the the girls were given the task of choosing their partners, the first time this happened to me, this stunning apparition came to me, her name was Pauline, she was a Gypsy it turned out, she wore her own version of school uniform (certainly NOT a rag doll). I was smitten, i couldn't wait twice a week to get close to her, we went out together through the Summer of that year 1959 what a joy it was, then, the Gypsy group moved on and i never saw her again, ahh memories .

    Knowing the history of this song and how it was written makes it even better, deeper, and tugs at the heart strings. It was written by Bob Guido about this little girl he noticed on the street (probably about 7, 8, 9 years old) looking sad while selling handmade items to strangers and by herself. It really struck a nerve with Guido because it was obvious she was poor because she was in raggedy clothes, her hair was stringy and she was by herself selling these cheap items to strangers to help support her family who probably were homeless, I'm not sure. Guido felt so sorry for this poor little cute girl looking scared and dressed raggedy just trying to make money and he couldn't stop thinking about it. So finally he had to write about it. Frankie Valli recorded it with the rest of the Four Seasons and the rest is history.

    If you can, check out their performances on Where The Action Is from 1965 (The Second Outside Project Of Dick Clark, the first being American Bandstand) where they sang a A Ski Resort. They Sang "Walk Like A Man" and on other segments they sang Big Girls Don't Cry at a Mountain and this Song at a Neighborhood Park. They were the first group from New Jersey to become big. They eventually broke up and Frankie had other hits like "My Eyes Adored You", and the theme to "Grease" written by Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees. One of their other hits "Who Loves You Pretty Baby" was featured when Susan Flannery left The Bold & The Beautiful in 2002 after 25 years to retire. Another one of their Songs "Beggin" was remixed by a French DJ Poloski and then went to Number One by a Hip Hop Group called Madcon. They were the first supergroup to make it out of New Jersey before Bruce Springsteen or even Bon Jovi.

    I would have to say this is my favorite Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons song. Even as a little kid I understood the meaning of the song. Growing up poor and living in the projects might have helped with that. I have listened to this song for quite some time and listening to it now brought me back to those days in the '60's.

    I mentioned my cousin Barbara in an earlier post who introduced me to The Four Seasons when I was a child. "Rag Doll" was her favorite. I guess it struck a nerve, because she was brought up poor, living in the Washington Place projects in Dallas in the early 60s. She considered herself a "Rag Doll". I was told by guys that knew her in those days that the opposite was true. Every guy wanted to date her because she was so beautiful inside and out. She was so self conscious and insecure. RIP my sweet cousin. I have a request to listen to the flip side of the 45 of "Rag Doll", "Silence is Golden". It turns out she was in the same situation as the girl subject in this song. Her first husband was a bigamist and abusive to her. People wanted to tell her to stay away from him, but chose not to for fear of her resentment.

    When I was a little girl my mom played this a lot because she related to it. She grew up very very poor and was picked on in school because she didn't have new clothes etc. I used to sneak off to my room and cry because I felt so sad for her and the girl in the song. I've loved Frankie Valli my whole life. 🥰✌️

    Great Classic 4 Seasons record. Couple things: 4 Seasons were the Jersey Boys and their harmonies were sooo tight and complex. A couple of years later and across the country in California burst out the beach boys singing their classic California surf music with amazing harmonies but not with a voice like Frankie. I wonder if they were influenced at all by the four seasons. I believe Phil Spector gave The Four Seasons their sound -that wall of sound.
    Secondly, yes, Jamall, there is the “social commentary” theme of the lyrics That came in to fashion at this time with such major stars as Elvis Presley, Diana Ross and the Supremes, later the Vietnam antiwar songs that very much added another layer to this beautiful music. they weren’t just beautifully produced songs, they said something, asking people to confront their own prejudices. Elvis Presley‘s “in the ghetto“ and Diana Ross and the Supremes “love child” were two huge hits that reached into our hearts to wake us up about the tragedy of poverty in the USA. Let’s not forget Helen Reddy‘s anthem of female equality and emancipation, “I am woman.“ And by the time of Stevie wonders “living in the city“ release, there was also an anger infused about these protracted problems affecting children and families. the 4 seasons might’ve been one of the first Rock and roll bands to record and distribute these “socially relevant” songs. I don’t think you hear those kinds of lyrics much anymore
    Good noticing that Jamall and pointing it out. And that’s another major difference between the music of the 60s and 70s in later because they were actually trying to say some thing they wanted to make an impact and it was for them it wasn’t just about sex drugs rock ‘n’ roll and making a whole hell of a lot of money although of course it was to adegree LOL especially with the four seasons LOL
