ARGUS was chosen by English critics as the best album of 1972 and the competition was heavy. It's Wishbone Ash's masterpiece!
agree
One of those double edged swords, a masterpiece they could never go on to match, IMOP!
It beat out Deep Purple Machine Head
Wishbone Ash, Argus; Genesis, Foxtrot; Yes, Close to the Edge; Lindisfarne, Fog on the Tyne.
Glad to see you falling down the WA rabbit hole. They are worth the trek.
Throw down the Sword is a blissful guitar duo masterpiece.
That's my favourite Wishbone Ash tune of them all. Truly epic twin guitar lead.
@@keithf_A masterpiece for sure, but an accidental one! Andy had done a couple of different leads for it and selected one, but when the engineer was mixing it, he accidentally put the other one on as well. When the band heard it, they decided to keep it.
This album is in my top 10.I have listened to it for 50 years ! Wishbone Ash is also a great live band.
I bought this LP in June 1972. Love every song. Leaf and stream is my comforting song. Wishbone ash is Iconic.
Top notch Prog Rock group from the 70's........double lead guitars ,second to NONE
My favourite band ever Argus is the masterpiece…….listened to this album for 51 years and it still feels as fresh as the first time…..Mon E Wishbone ……..
Such a great live band back in the day...
Still are and touring every year
I believe only one original member now?
@bmac1205 no Martin Turner is doing his thing in Europe only as Ex Wishbone Ash and Andy Powell is doing WA all over as he did an underhanded maneuver when the group was together and got the name rights
Thanks guys. Argus is a concept album so you may want to check it all out as it is a gem!
They just recently did 'The King Will Come' as part of a marathon.
Really like that you're reacting to Wishbone Ash! I *strongly* recommend that you check out the entire 2nd side of their first album, Wishbone Ash, which offers *Handy* & *Phoenix.* I think Lex will be impressed with Bassist Martin Turner's "lead bass" contributions on those two songs (he definitely was aware of Chris Squire, who also used a Rickenbacker). As great as their Argus album was, I think their first album was every bit as great...
I've never heard a bass solo (Handy) sound like it's talking... telling a story in its own musical language... don't know how else to describe it. The bass player is so unique.
Gorgeous song. Do listen to Persephone and errors of my way.
Nick did 'Persephone' two weeks ago.
Absolutely one of their best songs
Argus is on my top ten albums ! Not one weak song on that album. This song is just emotion and beauty… and a wonderful bass line too… not talking about the guitars.
Nick said about the song " It was very calm". True - but believe me, it's the calm before the storm....
Ooooooooo, more Wishbone Ash!👍
Argus is possibly their best album.....possibly. There's so many, I own 14 Ash LP's, more than any other band (my brother has 18!) and I have a Japanese pressing of Argus, (sweet!).....and more people should mention them, they are criminally under-rated by the mainstream. Their live albums are brilliant, especially the 'Live Dates' collection. More Ash please!!
PS: Nick, the word you might have been looking for could be 'ethereal'. A lot of Ash's early proggy stuff could deserve this description I believe.
PPS: Wow, you're so right about music and smells....both can take you vividly back to a time and place in your life! A friend once said that music is way better than movies....a movie will rarely have the same effect once you watch it but music can be equally or even more amazing no matter how many times you listen to it.
They were excellent live! This is an enchanting album with shades of Peter Green’s version of Fleetwood Mac.
Love that you're playing Wishbone Ash. I admit to overlooking them myself in the 70s so it's great to get a reminder if how good they are.
Saw them twice back in the day absolutely superb thanks for the great reaction
Someone once told me that"Leaf and Stream" introduces the background to 3 final track classics "The King Will Come" ,"Warrior" , "Throw Down The Sword"
Brilliant underrated band back in the 70’s imo I saw them a few times they were brilliant live. Check out Live Dates double Album 💿👌🎶
Beautiful track. As others have said all the tracks on this album are first class.
Ya'll need to listen to Handy off of their first album. One of my favorites by Wishbone Ash. Bass guitar at it's finest.
Definitely.
Lady J is another great song, off a later album by Wishbone Ash.
By way of contrast Warrior is next up guys! So glad your reacting to this fine band, many thanks
Listen to Phoenix… from the live dates album
If you want another mellow track, with those interwoven guitars from Wishbone Ash, "Candlelight" off the "New England" album - short and instrumental.
Love you guys! That's my only response!
Great to hear some more Wishbone Ash. One of those bands you either know or don't.
Bands that have two guitarists always sound a lot different and somehow deeper.
I can confirm that I was a tennager when this came out.
Nice song! Never heard it before. There is something about songs in minor keys really stand out!
Persephone , Everybody needs a friend and Lady Jay 🙏
Nick did 'Persephone' two weeks ago.
Managed to see Wishbone Ash in 1970, stunning gig but only 20 people there.
When I 1st saw them in Tampa, FL on a lark there was maybe only 150 people there. But we were all blown away. So when they came back through at the end of their tour, I made sure I was there. There was probably still fewer than 500-600 people there, but we were delighted...
In the 60s and 70s there were so many bands of quality about vying for attention it was hard to get noticed (tv shows, stadium gigs) so wishbone ash and many others had dedicated followers, but they are still with us that shows you what a great band they are! (actually 2 versions playing, led by 2 origional members) martain turners wishbone ash and wishbone ash with andy powell leading. Both excellent.
They were the first band I knew to use a flying V guitar, I guess it is called. I liked the sound but at the time was most intrigued by bands that used Mellotrons, Moogs and ARPs...and if also funky time sigs and a flower power groove...all the better still. Yes was a prime example. And maybe Barclay James Harvest...whose "Hymn" truly is. Wishbone Ash I associate with Ten Years After, Led Zep, Throbbing Gristle, Raging Slab, Christian Death, Donnie Oswald, Gnat King Kong. One song I love, but forgot the name. I'll check.
Thanks, if you are a guitar player you cant not be aware of Wishbone Ash.....Quality plus.
Anything from the Argus album is gold,guys..fab album! T
One of the most underated bands of all time, phoenix jailbait blowing free to name a few
Great song and epic album. I listened to this record for hours as a teenager. Hours well spent and no regrets. Nice request and Wishbone Ash and NicknLex has a great ring to it.
Yes, this album helped me keep in touch with my high school friends as we went through college. We went our separate ways, but we all loved Argus.
Excellent, great tune as Argus is their best album, incredible atmosphere throughout. You should do the 2 songs that came after this on the album as a 2 song suite, Warrior and Throw Down the Sword belong together and are the apex of the album and for me, what Wishbone Ash is all about. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
Nick did 'The King Will Come' as part of a marathon just a few days ago.
@@bmac1205 Yep, that I viewed, they need to do Warrior and Throw Down the Sword as one reaction, they go together like that entire side of awesome music.
Glad you have been introduced to more of this great but often overlooked band and enjoyed it! Think you would like Sorrel and Ballard of the Beacon from Wishbone Four as they are in the same sort of genre. Also as i keep saying Persephone from Live Dates 2 is an essential listen.
If you liked this track you need to listen to their first album. Phoenix and Errors of My Ways highly recormmended
Three of the greatest guitarists ever all played in the same band. Ted Turner, Andy Powell and Laurie Wisefield. Most bands are lucky to have just one. Add the greatest bass player Martin Turner and drummer Steve Upton. Blues, rock, jazz, prog and folk!
Well said
Seeing them in 4 weeks time at the Ropetackle Centre in Shoreham by Sea. Just love this band , always brilliant live. I saw the play most of Argus at the Oval in London when they first launched the album. Glad you guys like them.
you must give" Live Dates" a go !! Ace ,,
It was a very nice album.
When I bought this album in 1977, we all said that it was already a very old recording :-). Back then, 5 years ago seemed like an eternity for us. You now: The years felt longer.
This track is a calming , thoughtful Masterpiece. No more no less!
Iron Maiden twin lead guitars were influenced by them. Look it up. Check out their more rocked out tunes. Great band!
this is the track on the album most people seem to forget- listening to it again now, it sounds like the best track on the album (but there is a lot of serious competition)- listening to music from this era now,it is amazing how many great bands were around at that time, but none of them sounded like each other-they all sounded totally unique- bands like wishbone ash, sabbath, purple, zeppelin, free, alice cooper, genesis, yes, floyd.tull etc were all brilliant -but you could not confuse one band with another bcause they were all completely different to each other
Beautiful, mellow song. Like ELP and Dire Staits had a baby. LoL 🤣💙🎵🎶🎶
My all time favourite song, beautiful.
This is a relaxation tune.. Laying in a hammock with leaves blowing around, with a nearby stream flowing, while you float away between conscious and unconscious. I've used it on a mixtape to lighten up the tempo between Rock jams..
Great choice Steven! I was 19 when Argus was released, so just at the end of my teenage years guys, but it was still very influential in guiding me onto future musical tastes. I've mentioned before that I saw them on the Argus tour of 1972 and it was a great gig! Consider that Argus was voted top UK album in '72 and the competition included Close To The Edge, Thick As A Brick, Foxtrot, Trilogy, Ziggy Stardust and many others. It certainly warrants a full album play perhaps? Super reaction, thanks guys.
That's Andy Powell playing the solo on this song. One of the great under-appreciated guitar players of the '70s. Argus is a masterpiece of nostalgic English pastoralism. Times long-gone. Wishbone Ash's debut album (self-titled, 1970) remains one the great "guitar" albums in terms of both the dual-guitar soloing and the rhythmic intensity. Absolutely outstanding. More boogie-blues rock than Argus. You'll get fans recommending Phoenix off the debut album, but, for me, it can go on a bit and is not the best song. Better songs are Handy, Lady Whiskey, and Errors of My Way.
Spotty through the years, but they have a lot of superb albums if you know which to skip and which to treasure.
Great band, I saw them live 4 times. Most recently in 2020 right before covid hit.
Please listen to Persephone and The King will come. Love your reviews.
Nick did 'The King Will Come' as part of a marathon just a few days ago.
Nick did 'Persephone' two weeks ago.
@@bmac1205I only see them as they come up on my phone.
Thanks for reviewing Wishbone Ash. Argus is one of my all-time favorites... had the LP and then got the CD.
It has a mystical vibe
I enjoyed listening to Wishbone Ash back in their new release era---the first album is very good also!
Wishbone are still touring they are brilliant live Andy Powell is up their with the best guitarists out there legend
Disco maravilhoso!!!
Where Iron Maiden planted their roots.
Yes, next week Wishbone Ash in The Netherlands
Marley sighting at time mark 1:05!!!!!😊🐶
Nick & Lex Se estan olvidando de Focus y su canción Hocus Pocus y otras felicitaciones por escuchar la buena música que disfrutamos los que tenemos arriba de los sesenta años, las mejores épocas y los mejores grupos, Bendiciones.
It is written in the English Constitution around 1215 at Runnymede I think..King John was forced by the Barons that Absolute Monarchy was illegal AND it was NEVER acceptable to play Side 2 of Argus individually..The King Will Come, Leaf and Stream, Warrior and The King will Come...true...honestly
That should read Thhrow Down the Sword as the last track..ahem
Check out the band October Project! Return to Me, Bury My Lovely, Laughing in the Rain, just to name a few.
For some real Wishbone Ash ear candy, take a listen to “Phoenix” off their 1970 debut album. I just doesn’t get any better than that.
Most of their songs were too long to get airplay. So you had to know someone who told you about them. Kinda like Leonard Cohen and Nina Simone, you had to know someone. Another one worth listening to is "Alone" (the long version) off Pilgrimage, their second album. Come to think of it, the whole album is excellent, as is their first. And the third.
Haunting might be a better term than eerie.
What an underrated song......
You've got to play the album, "Argus", still great, after all these years!✌
I think what Nick meant was ''haunting'' rather than eerie
Did you ever review the first album from babe Ruth? It's called first base. Wells Fargo is a song that will get you out of your chairs. If you can review this one first and then review the Mexican I would really appreciate it!!
SUPERB TRACKS FROM THAT ALBUM TIME WAS AND THE KING WILL COME AND FROM ALBUM PILGRAMIGE THE INCREDIBLE TRACK JAILBAIT. BUT BOTH TREMENDOUS TASTE ON YOUR REVIEWS OF BANDS ...
LISTEN TO HAWKWIND ALBUM SPACE RITUAL SUPERB THE FIRST LIGHTSHOW BAND TRACKS 10 SECONDS OF FOREVER BURSTS STRAIGHT INTO BRAINSTORM AND THE UNFORGETABE ROCK EXPLOSIVE MASTERPIECE !!
MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE 🧨🎹🫨🎤🧨
Nick ti consiglio Matteo Mancuso yong Italian guitar fusion virtuoso. Non usa il plettro.
👍💪🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Better than Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin
Vi 3 videos vuestros de wishbone ash y no me gustó nada la selección de canciones que escogisteis.ninguna está entre sus mejores canciones
Exactly. They were an obscure band, at least in the US. But they were fantastic. Some bands are not destined to create smash hits but rather just produce great music.
Another band you might want to try is BEBOP DELUXE. Another British band that never hit it big in the US but just phenomenal. Bill Nelson probably the most underrated guitarist ever. Can play with anyone.
I’ve loved this song since the 70’s. Still love it. So beautiful
