Trivia - In early 1970, the band secured an opening spot for Deep Purple. Ritchie Blackmore, later recommended Wishbone Ash to producer Derek Lawrence, helping them secure a record deal. Andy Powell stated he cheekily joined in with Blackmore during his sound checks "Ritchie was a respected guitarist and I was new to the scene. We traded a bunch of guitar licks and he was impressed enough to ask whether we had a record deal. When I said “no”, he offered to help and the rest is history!
The twin guitars of Andy Powell and Laurie Wisefield saw them on this tour in 1974 at Newcastle Odeon. As clear as a bell live as on the album. One of my best-ever concerts. It's well worth a full album listen.
Hi blamhof. Yes, 10th October 1974. I was there. Newcastle Odeon. It was the There's the Rub tour. Disappointed, of course, that Ted had left the band, but Laurie didn't disappoint anyone. It was, indeed, a great gig. One of my best ever, too. I think they opened with Silver Shoes, but perhaps that's a piece of false memory. You're probably already aware, but there's a great video on YT of the band playing this song in about '75 in Cologne on the New England tour. The beauty of the guitar playing never fails to affect me.
Edit: I've just checked on WA Concert Setlist website. The set was as follows: 1. Don't Come Back 2. Silver Shoes 3. Lady Jay 4. The King Will Come 5. Warrior 6. Throw Down the Sword 7. Persephone 8. F.U.B.B. 9. Blowin' Free 10.Time Was Encore: Hometown No Easy Road Where Were You Tomorrow
@@tonyanderton3521 The only other band I saw at the Odeon were Deep Purple, the Hughes and Coverdale incarnation. All the rest back in the day were either The City Hall or those great Friday nights at The Mayfair. Happy days.
Wishbone Ash was founded as a blues rock dual lead guitars group with dynamic bass player and powerful drumming..Argus is the best known album where your 1st reaction came from. In January 1975 in Baltimore I saw them do several cuts from There's the Rub..
First listened to Wishbone Ash back in the 70s but they fell off my radar for ages. You've reminded me again of what a great sound they had. Like many others I think Argus is their most complete album.
Thanks for reacting to this beautiful song, Wishbone are very talented musicians and there are so many more great songs to explore, by way of contrast to Persephone, i think you will enjoy ' Dont come back ' from the same album
The first time I heard and saw Wishbone Ash when the German television program Rockpalast (WDR) aired a full concert. I loved the guitar playing. Seems it has been released on cd and vinyl and such in 2019.
Great Reaction! Have been waiting for some more Wishbone Ash.. Perhaps Nick could arrange a Marathon. Sampling from a variety of their LP's would be cool. My 5 suggestions would be.. "The Pilgrim " "Lady Whiskey" "Blowing Free" "The King Will Come" "Master Of Disguise" ___ Thanks.
One of the best gigs I ever went to in the early 70's was Wishbone Ash supported by Joan Armatrading at the Birmingham Town Hall. They were promoting their classic Argus album, the third of an incredible trio of Wishbone Ash with the original twin guitars of Andy Powell and Ted Turner. These guys were pioneers and inspirations for many great guitarists and guitar bands that followed. Ted had left and been replaced by Laurie Wisefield for this album, and I don't know it well, but it seems to me that the standard didn't drop! Very cool track. Many thanks Nick x2 and Alexia. Argus would probably be a popular full album contender.
This is one of the best Ash songs among many great others and the whole album is inthat vibe, you will love it. And I was so lucky to see them live in 1980 at the wonderful Lorelei Open Air Amphitheatre. Can you imagine a warm August night filled with this beautiful music?😊
British band relocated to east coast, Connecticut and Florida. Martins bass was at its best by far all over the album. New kid Laurie Wisefield was embarrassingly good. Uptons shuffling drum sound was so unique. Plus Eagles producer Bill Szymczmzkc or however it’s spelt. Top album
Hi Guys, This is from my favourite Wishbone Ash album "There's The Rub" and I had 3 tracks written down for a marathon among my list of songs. The other 2 were "Lady Jay" & an instrumental called "F.U.B.B" both tracks again, with those prominent twin lead guitars they are so famous for. So I just crossed this one off. Lol ... I love "Persephone" and the lyrics are wonderful. That final guitar solo I just put the volume up to 11 and .. omg is it sooo good !!!! Just happy you got to hear this. You need to hear it again without any distractions ... and loud !!! Great reaction and I love Wishbone Ash. Great studio albums and a good number of amazing live albums. Thankyou byeee Jim X
You need to listen to their first album self titled. The first side is double guitar straight rock. The second side is that ambient prog rock fantastic album!
Great band. Lex noticed the bass early on. Which was insightful. Although noted for their twin guitar sound, Martin Turners bass was the beating heart of the band. A wonderful player. The album is well worth a listen. The two stand out tracks are Silver Shoes, the opener and the amazing instrumental F.U.B.B.
Wishbone Ash, Renaissance and Caravan shared a common management around this period; Andy Powell of WA guested on the Renaissance track Ashes Are Burning, returning the compliment for John Tout having played keyboards on WA's Argus album. There's perhaps too tight a hold on serving the musical arrangement in many WA tracks; you can set your watch by them - it's in a good way, a crafted fashion, which perhaps inhibits an audience's sense of being carried away by the whole proceedings. Then again, many of their tracks set out to disprove that theory and usually succeed. Try the rest of this album for an impression of the variety of their material. Their most recent studio album was released in early 2020, Coat Of Arms, no less varied.
You guys reacted to Wishbone Ash Sometime World but not any since! I saw them in 1975 and 1989 and got to talk to them in San Diego for 45 minutes and they signed all my albums
Wishbone Ash a top band , that I have been lucky enough to see live on more than one occasion. For me Ash are a mix of blues/Jazz/folk & rock with their very own unique twin guitar sound. Just listen to tracks like Handy, Sorrel, Errors Of My Ways, Throw Down The Sword and Vas Dis to get a feel of the band.
Do more Wishbone Ash, just a great band, still going. They were famous for their twin lead guitars and used this concept so effectively. I have about 14 WA albums, studio and live. A rabbit hole of goodness.
Weirdly enough many years ago I had a girlfriend who actually knew this band personally. That's the limit of my knowledge of the band but I do remember her though!
There's the Rub is my favourite Ash album. Lady Jay, FUBB, ... 6 perfecr guitar driven songs. The Ash are my favourite dual guitar group, followed by Thin Lizzy. On the studio version of the Renaissance song, "Ashes Are Burning" Andy Powell contributed a guitar solo to close out the song. Worth a listen sometime if you haven't heard it. He also guest-starred with Renaissance on a couple of their live concerts
