I wanted to say thank you to the Betts family for sharing this great man with us. Just heard the news and a rush of emotion ran through my memory. I turned 65 last Friday and if you are my age you will have fond memories of this man and his contribution to the world of music through the Allman Brothers Band. Both technical and soulful he was the glue that held the band together after the loss of Duane. Godspeed Dickie….You will be lovingly missed.
What a giant in the world of music. May he rest in Shalom. May his memory and music always bless us. The piano player on this is the great Chuck Levell, who founded his own band, the awesome Sea Level. I got to see that version of the 70’s Allman Brothers, with Chuck and Dickey (Duane has already passed away years before. And it was magic. Saw them twice. Great reaction and great choice. Thank you so much.
Born in the 50’s… I am so fortunate to have known every bands being played on Fm rock…. The Allman brothers were regularly played … Everything! The 70’s musical melodical decade … Is with us forever! Thank you Dickie Betts for this amazing instrumental! And recordings… For the eternal music!
I’m there with you brother! Born in ‘55 and had two sisters 4 & 5 years older who were all over the top 40 by 1960-61 and I was listening to all those 45’s when the Monkeys, Hermans Hermits, Beatles, Dave Clark Five(British Invasion) Animals, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Kinks, Steppenwolf, Who, Led Zeppelin and on and on! The Allman Brothers were one of my favorite bands through college ‘73-‘78! Blessed to have seen almost every group who came through Tulsa and OKC starting in ‘68 when tickets to a big named band was $10, smaller concerts were $6-$8 a ticket. That was three yards I had to mow in ‘69 and ‘70.
@@lantose we are in the same league…I was the youngest of a family of 6.. (born in 57,) but I was a early music lover.. everything I could Learn.. I loved. From Classical to rock! So much material we were blessed to appreciate until our last day on earth!
I wish I had gotten a chance to see the original band members. Such great musicians. All gone now. It makes me so sad but they left a legacy of great music for us.
It’s remarkable to me that the Allman Brothers not only survived the enormous loss of Duane Allman, in my opinion, one of the top three or four guitar players of all time, but continued to thrive with Dickey. With Duane and Dickey together until ‘71 they were incomparable, but they were still great as Dickey and Gregg carried them through. They were there own genre, the most soulful jazz improvisations I’ve ever heard. So much talent in every member and as a group, one of a kind. Thank you Nick for celebrating Dickey with the immortal “Jessica”!
I believe Chuck Leavell was only 19 or 20 when he did that piano solo on Jessica. He went on to tour with the Stones for many years but this album really put him on the map.
RIP Dickey. I loved the Allmans the first time I ever heard them, Live at the Filmore album. I was only 13 when Duane passed so never saw the original outfit but saw them many times over the years, including their last run of shows at the Beacon in NYC. Dickey wrote some great songs. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and Blue Sky being my top two. Great guitar on Jessica and a great Chuck Leavell piano solo too.
All of the guys in these "Classic Rock" era Bands (1960s 1970s) are at, or nearing the age when they are in their final years. I'm 68, and most of these guys were about ten years older than me when I was a kid listening to them. Sad, but life goes on, plus we have their great music and memories to enjoy. Thanks Nick God Bless
A terrific song for a remembrance of the great Dickey Betts. A great band that is almost without rival. That’s also Chuck Leavall who formed the band Sea Level on that killer piano. You are correct that you recently heard a Bruce Kaphan cover on Steel Guitar. In my comments I said you needed to hear the original ASAP. So sad that he passed. Nothing compares to the original version. I was wanting to request it but alas. RIP Dickey Betts. ❤️❤️
In my original letter when I made the request, I said that you need to listen to the original ASAP. Unfortunately it had to happen under these circumstances.😥 I debated when I put that original Marathon together whether I should also include the original Jessica in it as well, but of course it’s a long song would not leave any room for Bruce. Oh well, a great reaction to a great guitar player. I’m sure you will get lots and lots of views.
"In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" by the Allman Brothers. There's a great acoustic version only available on youtube. It was from a private industry concert.
Thank you, Nick, for the tribute to Dickey Betts (RIP) - That was the great Chuck Leavell, an amazing player and session musician on the piano. Dickey wrote this song as a tribute to Django Reinhardt
This was a gut punch for me when I heard the news this morning. Thanks for reacting to "Jessica", my favorite of his works, not only named after his daughter, but a song impossible not to smile to while listening. R.I.P Dickey Betts- wish I had the chance to see you perform live, but thank you for your memorable music, nonetheless.
Jessica was one his best known tunes. For Dicky's best guitar work, listen to Stormy Monday on Fillmore East, or Mountain Jam on Eat A Peach. He was always overshadowed by Duane, but he was fabulous guitarist in own right. Plus, he was a great writer, as heard on Jessica or Liz Reed. I met him once, but that's another story. RIP DB. 😢
You might have heard Jessica if you've seen the movie Field of Dreams with Kevin Costner. There's a scene with him and James Earl Jones driving down the freeway in an old VW van with Jessica cranked on the stereo. I'm glad you liked it. We're all hurting today. No one lives forever 💔
And so we lose another great musician. This is sad, but unfortunately it will happen more and more over the next few years. Thanks Nick for playing Dickey at his peak. This record came out just a few days before my 20th. birthday; what a pleasure to listen to 'Jessica' again and let my memories wash over me.
Thanks for doing this and great song choice. I just realized this year marks 50 years since I first heard the Allman Bros and this song. Dickie Betts was a great composer and musician, and most definitely a major influence in modern guitar.
Damn! Another one bites the dust!!!😢 Loved Allman Brothers so damn much! They were my SECOND rock concert on June 8, 1972. The concert was part of thier "Eat A Peach" tour, which was the first tour following Duane Allman's tragic death the year before. I was only 18, and turned 19 the following month. I went with 3 of my former high school girlfriends/chums. Somehow, on the walk from the overflow parking lot, to the coliseum entrance, I LOST MY TICKET. I didn't realize it until we got to the lawn area in front of the venue, where the lines were forming. Being the big baby that I am, I was standing there with my 3 friends, I'm crying and they are rummaging through their purses to try to come up with the $6.00 for a door ticket. (It was fesitival seating). Plus, the line for the door tickets was ridiculously LONG, and I didn't want them to have to wait for me after the doors opened, and we were trying to negotiate that scenario among us.......when Suddenly, a cute young male stranger came up and said he had an extra ticket he would give me! Thanks to the kindness of a Hippie Stranger, I got to see one of my first, and one of the BEST concerts of my life!! (actually, I think he ***might*** a ticket scalper, but he felt sorry for me.) Dickey was just ON FIRE during that show. They all were. Dickey was almost completely responsible for getting the band to tour after Duane's death. Thank God he did that!! "Time quickly passes by. If only we could talk again!"
One of the best playing one of the best instrumental rock songs! R.I.P. Dickey. The heavenly Brothers' Band is becoming epic! Thanks for the sweet tribute, Nick! 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie
Truly one of the greats of Rock music! He will be sadly missed. He came up with that song while watching his baby daughter crawl across the floor. Inspiration comes from everywhere! Thanks for taking the time to celebrate this mans contribution to not only rock music but to everyones life that he touched with all of this music! Peace, Nick!
Thank you for the great ”tribute reaction” in honor of one of the true greats! I have been blessed to see the Allman Brothers in many different forms and each and everyone of them were/ are incredible!! RIP Dickie and thank you for all the incredible memories!!!
As an Allman Brothers Band diehard fan the passing of my musical hero really hurt. All the tributes over the last few weeks have just shown how this man impacted people. He had a tone on his guitar that really was like no other. He could right beautiful songs and his instrumentals were masterpieces. The song Jessica was named after his daughter. He drew inspiration from Django Reinhardt on this instrumental. He also said Chuck Leavell probably could have gotten a writing credit because he brought the song to another level on his piano solo. Later on when they played this song it became more of a guitar song when Warren Haynes joined the band and later with Jack Pearson and Derek Trucks Dickey will forever be remembered as a legend. Play it loud for the Angels Dickey ! 🙏🍊🎸
My husband's good friend, Chuck Leavell , is the pianist on this classic. He still lives close to the Big House, here in Macon, GA. Chuck has toured with The Stones for decades and is their musical director now. But those years when the Brothers did free concerts in our city park, my Dad and I always went. I'm smiling right now
As a young teenager, early seventies, I was familiar with Albatross by Fleetwood Mac, an instrumental. And then the radio played all the time Jessica by Allman Brothers and Sylvia by Focus - two instrumentals with a girl name. Loved them, and a revelation that good music does not always require words.
Oh, I forgot the hits by Ekseption, a Dutch band that made jazzy/poppy versions of Bach music and such, also without lyrics, like Peace Planet (Badinerie by Bach, BWV 1067)
Both are great. But in “Blue Sky”, we get a bonus, his singing. “Ramblin’ Man” is great because of that awesome building of overdubbed layering of multiple guitar parts. Masterful.
Dickie Betts was incredible and unforgettable.R.I.P. Nick I agree with you 100% about Rolling Stone Magazine which most rock fans consider pretty much a joke with their lists!
Dickey's clean guitar sound comes from is Gibson Les Paul Gold Top, and Marshall amps loaded with JBLs. JBL'S with a Marshall amp is a very unusual combination.
So sad that we are slowly losing the greatest musicians ever. “Jessica” is probably my favorite instrumental song or it’s right up there. It’s played on the radio all the time after all these years and I never get tired of it. I will think of Dickey every time I pull out onto Highway 41 which is what I do almost every day.
What a loss. Good choice Nik. It’s hard to pick a song. Blue Sky is worth a listen. There is a great video performance of Blue Sky from a German Tv Show. It’s mind blowing. It’s easy to find.
You’re right about Bruce. He did Jessica with his Quartet. The pedal steel gave it more of a country vibe. But he did jazz it up with some daring key changes.
When I saw the Allman Brothers live in 1975 here in Los Angeles, when they played Jessica, a string broke on Dickey’s guitar, but he did not miss a beat as the roadie rushed in and gave him another guitar.
Man he was a hell of a guy and if you remember the movie almost famous they kind of loosely based it on him. Allman Brothers band we're so good back in the day and I'm a big jam band guy so right up my alley
I have a bench with Blue Sky carved into it. My name is Richard and my friends called me Dickey because of him. One of my all time fave songs. RIP Dickey
I learned “Jessica” in my teenage bedroom, 50 years ago… but my favorite Dickey song is off his album, “Highway Call”, the title track. Sublime, especially at his passing.
Been an Allman Brothers fan since 1970. Duane once said that he was the famous guitar player, but Dickey was the better player. The acoustic guitar on this song is being played by Les Dudek. you should take a trip down Les Dudek Albums.
RIP Dickey❤😢❤Nick you have to do a lot of Allman Bros. So good. Whipping Post is my fav.❤I know how hard it is for you to pick the best song because it's really hard for me/us to pick one for you... I don't want to pick a bad one.❤ I just noticed your hair is getting long... love it!!🥳
" I want to introduce to you my friends and your friends, the ones that are going to help me get elected along with you - the great Allman Brothers!" - Jimmy Carter, Providence RI Civic Center concert Nov., 1975.
Did you know, that one of the best guitar players - John Petrucci - plays an awesome cover of Jessica ? Live together with his wife at the European Guitar Awards in 2019, check it out here in youtube. John and Rena - almost as good as Dickey and Duane 🤘 In Memory of Elisabeth Reed of the Live At Fillmore East Album would have been another great choice - probably not only MY favourite Allman song 😆
Yeah I hate that fizzy high gain distortion used by shredders and metal wallies. It sounds as though they are shaking a can of gravel and mixing the sound into the signal.

One of the great American Bands. R.I.P.
You picked the right one. This is Dickey Betts at his best. Jessica is one of the greatest instrumental rock songs in history.
Thank you. I am "of that generation". This hits hard
You couldn't have picked a better tribute song. Perfectly illustrates his own brand of guitar genius. Thank you.
Agreed.
Jaimoe is the only one left from that monumental Fillmore East performance. RIP Dickey.
Was just thinking that…wow.
Thom Doucette is still alive.
What a giant in the world of music. May he rest in Shalom. May his memory and music always bless us.

Stephen Caruso at work- had Idyllwild South as a teen 53 years ago -loved them and loved Eat A Peach
Hey welcome Stephen at work!!!
I know I'm old because I had Eat a Peach on 8 track. Played it so much I had to do the old stick a matchbook under the tape trick 😂
Betts was a very melodic player, without being flashy. A good counterpoint to Duane Allman’s dirty slide and blues.

Here's a tribute song, High Falls live or studio!
