TWOD mastermind details his spiraling stompbox setup.
Before a full evening of The War on Drugs’ jams in support of 2021’s I Don’t Live Here Anymore, PG was invited to Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium. We covered Granduciel’s growing guitar collection, got the skinny on how Jerry Garcia’s monstrous setup played into the bandleader’s theatre rig, and we took in a cockpit view of his stompbox squadron full of tone ticklers, sizzlers, and wigglers. In addition, bassist David Hartley showed off a trio of Ps, an armada of Ampegs, and demo’d a fuzz that has ended his quest for razing tones.

I love Adam and the War on Drugs but I’m glad he’s better at songwriting than he is at pedalboard tours.
He did finish a few sentences lol.
The guy that made that pedalboard surely lost his war on drugs.
His minimalist approach is a refreshing vicissitude from todays excessive pedal boards.

I love to see someone like me continue to try out new pedals all the time. I try to keep my board as small as possible but there is just to many good pedals out there!
This band speaks to my soul. Love this guitarist and vocalist. Saw them at Sacred Rose and it was AMAZING
Under the pressure is my favorite.
Caught them at Summerfest in Milwaukee. They blew me away! Sounded better live then the recordings. I have already got my tickets for the tour with The National. Can't wait!
I like their music! I’m not going to knock his setup until I get to hear it live and decide for myself if it makes a difference.

Adam is a super down-to-earth person. This rig is kinda ridiculous, but I take it as a sign that he’s obsessed with, and lost in, what he does. It seems like he could probably simplify this and get near-identical results. But why? The lesson is not that home musicians should have a board like this. But it’s fun to see what happens if you just get totally lost in the dream of pedals and sound and gear.

Awesome. A lot of ignorant comments in this section. This dude is a aural craftsman. Whether you enjoy their music or not, there is artistry in tone, which is as important as the song in 2023 and beyond. We are evolving, and soundwriting is a thing.

Man, just when I thought I had too many pedals on my board (ten)...
The great thing about this rig is that he can just pick his stuff and be on his way within a minute or two. And it doesn't require much time on stage for setting up and soundcheck. And lastly, this is not something you could all do easily with a laptop and an interface nowadays.

I think we finally found the guy who can give Thomas Mcrocklin a run for his money for most outrageous and biggest paddleboard, that being said, I wouldn’t know what to do with half of that. I have my fender amp set up with five or six Boss pedals, but you can never have too many Boss pedals 🤘🏻🎸🎶

I've seen this band live and they sounded amazing. I think some people get a little carried away with pedals though. I'd hate to be the one to set that up and trouble shoot it.

Sadly I'm just an amateur player but I dream big too . 😂... awesome workstation man..got the works covered in thinking..if I used all of my effects to build a single board it'd be 3 times this size.. however even though I could I don't..I usually stack up a5-8 pedal set-up and tweak and play..lotta fun man

There are two mics next to his mic stand. One is pointed at the audience, that could be an ambience mic. But the other one is pointed at the stage, I wonder, what that one is doing.
I'd assume they use it to feed some stage ambience into their in-ear-monitors mix.
This band is tight, but this board is OVERKILL.

It might be hard because they're a band that does a lot of extended jams and night-to-night changes. They're not really a band where "the show" can be pre-programed in.
He had nothign to with his pedalboard, it was all his tech... thats why he didnt know sh t last time he was interviewed.

I just brought that up because there are some big touring guitarist that don't want any pedals on stage and have their tech do the switching off stage. what may seem complicated to me might be easy for somebody else. maybe that pedal rig is easy for him to operate while performing and singing 😄
@@Joshua_Ott That's usually the better way to go if they're playing the same show every night and everything has to be perfectly synched to other elements of a massive production. That's why you see that on a lot of big tours.
If you've ever seen Drugs play live, Adam spends a lot of time fiddling with his pedals to create a soundscape. They're a bit jam-bandy in that respect.
