  • Part 2 of a fascinating "Sounding Out" interview with music legend STEPHEN STILLS from 1972. Stills discusses his early days, influences, etc. with amazing candor and humor. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:I did a thorough check to see if the copyright to this was current. IT IS NOT CURRENT, therefore it is now PUBLIC DOMAN. I have also contacted STEPHEN STILLS(in May 2008)for his permission to post it here on TH-cam. MR. STILLS GRANTED ME FULL PERMISSION.Unless proof of copyright violation can be proven PLEASE DO NOT DELETE THIS.

This man is one of the most underated songwriters of his generation. He is, and was, GREAT! Not everybody is a great humanitarian, or wonderful person to be around. He is a great artist. Give his music an honest, objective listen and you'll see that he is "up from the people" long before Mellancamp and others. He's a real artist. He's one of the greatest.

I have met and talked to Stills twice. BOTH occasions he was friendly and in NO way was "a real asshole". Considering that the second time I spoke to him he was in terrible pain from a torn knee ligament he showed ALOT of tolerance:both for his injury and his fans who came pushing onto him before and after the concert. He even admonished a guard who tried to block a fan from approaching him, telling the guard:"DON'T EVER treat a fan of mine like that ever again! I WILL NOT tolerate it!"

I met him in '91. I was a waiter in a restaurant in Rosslyn, VA and I waited on him and a large group of fairly humorless people. The restaurant was a place where a lot of celebrities came, and we would always get pictures of them, if they were OK with it, to hang on the walls. I got my wife to bring her camera and we got a few pics, one with his arm around my shoulder, so he seemed pretty cool, but in the end, he stiffed me. But I still love him.

Stills ... so poised, technically brilliant, and so musically "magical" so young. A genius, no doubt.

Saw him tonight with his band in NY and they rocked the house beyond belief! He hit all the high notes, and even said he surprised himself! Great variety, acoustic, jamming, rocking out. Totally awesome!

Actually, I heard that he was quite sober but had been awake and in studio when this interview was done-working away with the band for WAAAY too many hours..minus coke. He is just VERY tired here, but still managed to give a wonderful and insightful interview nonetheless.

A big reason that nowadays Stills can be hard to understand is because he has suffered a MARKED loss of hearing in BOTH ears..wears TWO hearing aids nowadays. He also suffers discomfort from dental implants. Both conditions can make him difficult to understand at times.

Listen to "Just Roll Tape" the 1968 demo that reveals the genius behind CSNY, here is a guy who paid the dues..
Stills is why I play music, and check out Ray LaMontagne, he had a God moment when he came to the same conclusion listening to Stills and has made a nice career out of it..

No matter what CSN or CSNY did.. for me it was always his solo recordings and that Manassas record.. you know which one! As for his personal demons.. well it's a hard life to do what he has done and during the epoch where he was most famous. He's one tough sob, and a first rate musician and artist. Love ya' Stephen!

Not to mention he is recovering from prostate cancer. Stephen took the drugs, he never let the drugs take him. I saw him this Sunday in an interview and montadtouhy1, I don't know what the F you are talking about he sounded very understandable. I love this man I have been a fan of his and have followed his career since 1970 and before when he was with Buffalo Springfield.

" Stephen took the drugs, he never let the drugs take him." - Not so sure about that. There's a lot of video evidence on youtube that tells the opposite.

I'm of the opinion that Stephen sang best right here during the "missing tooth" era.

Two VERY under-rated musicians in this dude and Maurice White. Two quiet, soft-spoken Americans who simply never became house-hold names when they simply deserved to be. His physical appearance is something short of shocking since '72. Apparently, his wanting to keep fit was a failure.

I want to go back time and do three things: (1) Find and buy a 1959 Les Paul, (2) Find and buy a 1940 D45, (3) Stay up 3 days with Stephen Stills!

I can sympathize with your experience with Stills and am aware that mine doesn't change what happened to you. I do know that I too have had VERY unpleasant encounters with celebs whom I had previously heard only nice things about (Jules Shear, Neil Finn, etc.). As you say, a person normally judges another almost entirely from THEIR OWN personal experience..that's only human and your prerogative.

6:11 For the sake of the audience? The Monkees? He got Peter Tork the job. For the sake of the audience didnt bother Stills too bad when they were all freeloading off Peter Tork. Running up and down Laurel Canyon in Peter Torks GTO. For the sake of the audience for the sake of the art.
