- Mario Party isn't exactly a series known for lore. However, throughout its various iterations, two characters developed a rivalry in tandem with each other: Bowser and Donkey Kong. Let's explore just how this came about, the various ways these two have crossed paths, and how well-balanced each encounter between the two ended up being from game to game!

Funny how DK has a tendency for being a Nice guy when on the sidelines, but is just hyper competitive while playing the game.
Really hope we get to see Bowser and DK throw hands in the Mario movie. As a character who's only sometimes acknowledged as part of the main Mario universe, I like the idea that DK is one of the few regulars who could stand in Bowser's weight class in direct combat without the kind of tricks Mario and friends would usually need to beat him.
Yeah, that sounds fun. Mario and Luigi need power ups and convenient bridge killing switches to win, maybe occasionally using brute power in the RPG games. Donkey Kong? He just doesn't give a crap and instantly KOs the Koopa King.
They do get to fight!

Melee's Gargantuan event did their Kong vs Godzilla thing to boot.
They even had toys to life at one point opposite each other.
This rivalry put their two heavy-hitters in an enduring slug fest.
DK hitting up to Bowser to earn his respect. Something Bowser has to move mountains for to touch Mario.
Not to mention their skylanders figurines

They had a little bit of interaction in Super Smash Bros. Brawl's story mode. It wasn't much, but Bowser was the one sent to attack DK, doing so by having his minions steal DK's banana hoard.
DK's rivalry with Bowser is Mario Party's version of King Kong vs Godzilla.
I personally headcanon that DK likes to pick a fight with Bowser because Bowser reminds DK of K Rool

You forgot to mention their duel cameo in one of the skylanders games, with a tie-in comic acrually giving a bit of character interaction.
I always liked that DK was willing to *square up* with Bowser when he stepped to Mario in Mario Tennis Power Tour
There's also the skylanders comic where Donkey Kong continually talks about how Bowser is being a whiny bitch
They should reference this rivalry more it’s interesting.
The Mario movie could be a good way to setup their rivalry since he's probably taking some stars form his kingdom
True maybe Bowser and K Rool could have a partnership behind the scenes maybe.

Just what I wanted to hear at 2 in the morning
As a kid my two favorite Mario characters were Bowser and DK (still mostly true today if not including RPGs).
I remember I drew them together a lot as a kid and I remember seeing the Melee renders of both of them and thinking they were Halloween costumes and wanting my parents to buy them.
I was a weird kid.
I hope DK gets to banana-slam Bowser in the Mario movie.

Well, there was that event match in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
In Japan they have weird ideas on brand/character ownership. Nintendo in-house, like Miyamoto etc, will never use DK to a large extent because they feel he belongs to the western devs now. I don't think we'll ever see DK prominently in anything aside from a side game, unless it's made by another team
@@Deadflower20xx i think is more how Rare shaped donkey Kong and their attempts to reimagine the character mostly failed (that jungle beat game was many things but not donkey Kong since the director of Mario galaxy none less misunderstood all of donkey Kong character and personality) and this is shown by how the dk country return games (return and tropical freeze) were developed by retro studios (which also developed the metroid prime series) but just like how Nintendo failed the recapture Samus character in other-M they tried again in metroid dread and succeeded!
I understand they might feel this but donkey Kong was the game who made the base for plumber who made the company to what is now days

I find Donkey Kong's history in Mario Party fun to think about. From being a player in the first four games, to being a side character in 5-9, to finally returning as playable in 10 and Super.
DK and Bowser being rivals is interesting. Both are heavyweights who were major antagonists to Mario at least once, yet they never teamed up against him. Instead, DK is content to challenge Bowser with his own muscle. I headcanon this as a primary reason why the two had opposite space effects in Mario Party games. I'm glad that both are fully playable in Super Mario Party.
Otherwise...this is quite a nice outlook on Donkey Kong in Mario Party. Nice video!
Now we just need K. Rool spaces in the next installment that are absolute K.A.O.S.

Been really enjoying these more small scale, almost bite-size analysis videos! Would be cool to see some of them (on other franchises) sprinkled throughout the year in between longer videos too!
This honestly makes me happy that it looks like the kongs are the trump card against bowser in the Mario movie

Those two also interacted in SSBB. Yeah, their relationship is underrated.
I kinda wish we could get some Sonic Adventure 2 kinda story in a Mario game where Bowser gets Donkey Kong, Wario and Waluigi to help him take out Mario and Luigi kinda like the Power Tennis opening.
Fun Fact: Luigi is canonically the hero in Mario Party 3, he doesn’t have an exclusive stamp for him. He’s only there if you play as one of the other 5 characters.
It would be funny to see a How good was DK actually in Mario Party, since he was meta in the beginning of the series.
The riviera of dk and bowser can not be understated
As a fan of MP8 I say that game's balance of power actually had DK better off, since in that game the two have a different effect on each board and they mirror each other's ability. But if Bowser tries to take something a player doesn't have, he has to give that player coins whereas DK always delivers. Also in KBHH you do go out of the way of the star in search of DK.

Also the fact that Skylanders Supercharged had those two as the sole Nintendo characters to make the jump to become full fledged Skylanders on Nintendo consoles only.

Do you think DK and Bowser's rivalry in Mario Party was ever supposed to be a reference to Bowser's resemblance to King K. Rool and both tyrants' penchant for assuming various identities? Because I have a hunch this can't just be a coincidence.

Donkey Kong punched Bowser off his spot in Mario Party 5 and Bowser was scared and he fled.
I’ve never noticed this but it makes so much sense! I’m actually making a Mario party game concept where dk is not part of the roster but is part of the board. Not just him but diddy too!!

I am somewhat of a "mainline only" Mario fan so I rarely play the spinoffs. I play the RPGs ( or at least I used to before Mario and Luigi died and Paper Mario started making the paper theme too literal ) because they felt like the only way we were going to get fleshed out versions of Mario's world. I only really went for Mario Kart because it is basically the gold standard for racing games. So a lot of the intricacies of the interactions of the characters in these games gets lost on me. Heck, I hardly understand the appeal of Waluigi or Daisy at all on account of them not appearing outside of Mario spinoffs ( yes I know Super Mario Land but really, would you say that gave us a taste of Daisy's personality in any way? )
That being said, I always did imagine Bowser and Donkey Kong having a weird rivalry when I was a child. There was that render of them clashing shoulders for Mario Kart 64 I'd see in Nintendo Power, they're both real heavyweight characters, both started out as Mario's foe, and King Kong vrs. Godzilla and all it's parodies in pop culture just kind of hammered it into my brain that big primates and big reptiles just don't like each other very much and must fight. So Bowser vs DK was on of my preferred matchups when I would battle my Nintendo beanie babies back in the day, and eventually in Super Smash Bros Melee. It's pretty cool to hear there is a slight bit of validation to my childhood headcanon that I was not aware of.
Now that I think of it, the Mario movie happens to star DK along with the rest of the cast. Maybe we'll see Seth Rogen directly help Chris Pratt out in thwarting Jack Black, like with the Rainbow Road charge at the end of the 2nd trailer...
Having played Mario Party fewer than 5 times in my life (I like my friends), I never knew any of this!
With the mario movie coming next year, I would absolutely love to see a fight between Donkey Kong and Bowser

I like to think that Bowser has a mutual respect for DK. Lorewise, Bowser regularly invades the Mushroom Kingdom because its ruler is a girly princess and their defense force is a bunch of Mushroom looking kids wearing diapers, not much of a threat and the Mushroom Kingdom champions: the Super Mario Bros don't really have the power to permanently put Bowser in the dirt.
The Kingdom of Kong is a different story though, I don't think Bowser would dare risk open warfare with Donkey Kong for fear of mutually assured destruction. So the Koopa Kingdom and the Kong Kingdom remain in a stalemate, like the U.S.S.R. and the U.S.A. during the Cold War.
Bowser also probably wants to steer clear of K. Rool as well. Would love to see some interaction between them. Perhaps it would be “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” type of situation, where both reptilians rival against DK & Mario.
What ya talking bout in Mario party seven has DK bonus it’s just a one on one DK vs ya for the whether ya get the prize or not and same for bowser except for whether ya fork it out to bowser or not. It’s honestly more less a better chance than just luck on the roll as you need skill to get your bonus or avoid punishment. And both got Three games for just you alone or EVERYONE. And during in multiplayer bowser mini games you can straight-out screw each other over. While it’s more everyone gets the slice of the pie for DK’s version of multiplayer with two of them they can just barely any bananas or even none of at all. Seriously a star for a mini game is a good deal and when ya lose, nothing happens. Seriously don’t sleep on what both these two have to afford on their spaces. Especially bowser space for chance to target your foes. Doesn’t matter if ya got single player bowser, cause skills wins the day, unless ya waste to much time on guessing wrong chests.

I'm guessing this won't count, but Bowser DID steal DK'S banana hoard from him and Diddy in Super Smash Bros Brawl. Also Bowser fights DK; at least an ancestor, in Super Mario RPG.
Technically in Super Mario RPG it was a completely different enemy from DK
