- Sure, "Peaches" may have been a fun music video, but why should Bowser be the only nintendo villain to get his own song, other video game characters deserve their time to shine as well. That's why I've teamed up with Bootleg Dub productions again for the spiritual successor to Curse of the Crystal Coconut! Enjoy!

Its been an incredible ride for the past 2.5 years. From working alongside Martin to develop the story outline, to helping build our team, to kasting voices- all of this…on top of what was already an incredible honor being able to provide the voices of Krusha/Kaboom/Swanky/The ‘K. Rool Rap’ Announcer, and even *sing* as some of the backing khoir! Absolutely INSANE.
I’ve long wanted to bring the world of DKC to modern audiences with my world-building and endless knowledge of the games and series. I couldn’t have made it happen with Martin, Alex and Al. It’s been the highest honor.
And y'all hit it out of the park and clean across the isles!

K.Rool going mad(der) after locking himself in the basement for 10 years is tragic.
On the other hand:
The Kremlings not thinking to check the basement for 10 years is hilariously on point for them.
Oh, Klump earned that burn!
I mean at 4:22 Klubba says, “Well that DOES explain all the missing food,” so presumably they checked the basement at SOME point but somehow didn’t find him.

@@darkbladenexas Aha, he must get the attention he deserves, more rather than his return in the last Super Smash Bros game, which was his first appearance since many years, and it was confirmed that more installments for the franchise are unlikely to happen
@@killerking1966 The time in the basement must have made him more feral too. In the main games, he always stood upright. But in Smash Ultimate, his dash has him going on all fours, as he does in his reveal trailer.

I find the funniest part is sometime after his initial smash reveal, he’s casually chilling in DK’s own home for Banjo’s reveal.
They finally got K. Rool some therapy and was able to make amends.

I love the idea that King K Rool missed all of the other smash games because he was too busy going nuts in the Kremling basement and Klump has cultivated a huge stack of letters inviting K Rool to smash lmao
It makes me wish they would do a follow-up with K Rool trying to be taken seriously by other villains like Ganondorf or Sephiroth, and maybe even forming a second rivalry with Dedede for almost ruining his grand reveal. 😂

This song was already a 10/10, but I really love it's built up to King K. Rool getting his Smash invite.

That may also explain in-lore why he went almost full feral in Smash Ultimate. In pretty much all of his appearances until then, K. Rool moved around on two legs. In Smash, the Kremling Kommander moves on all fours when he's running - just like his archnemesis DK!
You can really tell how badly K.Rool wants both himself and the Kremlings to be seen as a legitimate and worthy adversary. Even if it means one final climactic showdown with his arch-rival where he may potentially meet his end, the King of the Kremlings wants to go down swinging, not to decay and be forgotten to time.
The irony is that he IS a legitimate and worthy adversary.

I love the implication that K. Rool's whole musical number, including him revealing himself to the rest of the Krew, was just a fever vision brought upon by the madness of his self isolation. Too ashamed of his failures as a leader to show his face to his Krew, but unable to bring himself to truly abandon them. He is only discovered by the others after his psychotic breakdown causes the basement to erupt in flames, as you can see by the boxes marked "Rool's Stuff (Fire Damage)" in the background of the mid-credits scene.

That’s what I was thinking.
I wrote a now deleted comment when the video first came out about how this all seemed to be in K. Rool’s head up until that last bit and the mid-credit’s scene with Him, Klump and Krusha on the couch.
I assume that the beginning scene with Klump, Krusha and the other Kremlings mourning K. Rool’s absence (or abscess as Krusha calls it) was real, but the rest wasn’t.
Yeesh, those years in the basement really drove him bonkers.
I wonder what’s with the glitchy static though.

@@mikistenbeck6517 I know I spelled it "kredits" but it is, and it's not just them!!!! Krusha's VA Len Carlson is the only one who was unable to reprise their role, but he's part of the In Memoriam at the end :)
The Fact that Alex managed to bring almost every single VA from the Donkey Kong animated series in to voice the characters once again is amazing.

We got to hear the other returning cast (except DK) say “Kremling” as well!

I'll be honest, I stopped longing for things years ago.
(I live in a Post-World where Metroid Dread, a New Half-Life game, Banjo-Kazooie returning, ETC. exist, and have that "magical" feeling ANYTHING could happen. Cept a new F-Zero. That one is just never gonna happen.)
Would I love to have another DK game? Ofcourse!
But I don't have that desire of wanting immediately right now cause its been 9 years since the last one. (And 5 years since its rerelease).
I, however, do agree the time for a new DK is coming, especially with how vocal people/fans have been.
Maybe it's being worked currently? Maybe not? Maybe it will be announced soon? IDK, I'm just a Foolish Optimistic.
But keep that chin up high, okay? And stop scapegoating your problems.
I love that Campbell mixes that typical ham with a lot more restraint and some legit chilling line delivery like his first line and “am I enough for you now?!” Hard to describe but it’s not the typical Saturday morning cartoon villain ham, I can buy this is a K Rool that’s been isolated for ten years and gone mad from his defeats.

The line “take on asunder as we cry blood and thunder” gives me chills
A villain on the edge is always subtly chilling even when they're played for comedy. There's always some animal instinct in the back of your mind telling you that this person could snap and do something horrible without hesitation.
The man sounds like he hasn’t aged a day, it’s incredible.

K.rool always had that love hate relationship with DK in the show. That line perfectly encapsulates his feelings. God damn.

This is like I stepped into a time machine and the DKC Cartoon was still current. Nobody sounds like they've aged a day. These are the real voices of these characters in my eyes
Admittedly Klump sounds a bit off, but I have to cut anyone from the original cartoon a lot of slack. They haven’t done these voices in 20+ years and some of them are in their early to mid 60’s now. Ben Campbell was ON POINT though.

Just wanted to say thank you for joining in on this, I know a lot of people trash on the show from way back then but you guys seriously made my childhood so fun I tuned in to see each episode and hearing most of you guys again in these roles just put the biggest and dumbest smile on my face!

I thought it just really good voice impressions, but it was actually THEM! I lost my mind when I found out it was the original cast. Huge props to them for joining!
There is fun and joy for all. No, it's not Pulitzer prize material, but we did our best and it was a great team. From the writers to the director, Mike Fallows, to the whole Nelvana team. Of note were the musical writing team and, at the time, the best 3D artists going. It was ground breaking. It led to our next big endeavour as a team. Rolie Polie Olie. Technology caught up with us eventually, but man, what a ride. 80's - 90's.

What’s also extremely amazing is that it’s been more than twenty years, but Ben Campbell and the others still got it. They don’t sound like they aged a day. Their voices are absolutely incredible. Especially Ben as King K. Rool
What's even better is this is a take he didn't entirely get to do. But here he mixes together both his Cartoon take on K. Rool and the Games version. And you can HEAR it.
I also love how, since this is a fan project not restricted by ratings, they were able to take FULL advantage of that amazing professional Hamlet man. I mean, just look at the burn from the end of the episode: "Klump, my dearly, dauntless Klump. Remind me, if I ever were to kill myself, I could scale to the heights of your blind devotion and leap down towards your IQ!"

@@nkromancerN Yep, Benedict is quite the theatrical actor considering he does perform on stage, but is also a great voice actor too. He was in quite a few Nelvana produced series like Berenstain Bears (Papa Bear in the 2003 version) Pippi Longstocking (Captain Longstocking) and Jane and the Dragon (Sir Ivon)

@@joeygamer5387 Out of curiosity, what’s your proof of this? I just really hope it’s actually happening, I heard rumors it started development just this past December, but I wasn’t completely sure, although if Universal Studios is anything to go by, because they only make lands that are based on movies, then yeah I think we’re definitely getting a Donkey Kong movie, because they already have a Mario & Donkey Kong Land, and I heard that some temple themed land (forgot which movie it was based on) is getting replaced by a Legend of Zelda Land, so with that in mind, I think we’ll be getting a Legend of Zelda movie as well somewhere down the line, probably after the Donkey Kong movie and after the Mario movie sequel, which is pretty exciting to me (just as long as they do Legend of Zelda justice by at least making it a bit more serious compared to a Mario or Donkey Kong movie.) The only other video game series that I would want to see as a movie or a trilogy would be if Disney could make a Kingdom Hearts movie, but Square Enix should definitely team up with them to make the movie, at least that could save it from being a subpar movie.

I love when the Kremlings were theorizing about K. Rool’s death, the scenarios were based off his defeats in his appearances

“eaten by sharks” - DKC2
“electric barbecue” - DKC3
“higher power” - Nintendo itself

@@videogollumer Yes, when K Rool fell into the sea after being kicked out of his ship. He was attacked by sharks.
@@spinner2168 Okay, I looked it up. See, I only played the GBA version; and in that version, he just fell into the water. The scene then quickly cuts to a seaweed covered K. Rool in Krocodile Kore, daring the Kongs to come and face him there.
To add on to that detail, each of the Kremlings discussing said theories barring Krusha and Klampon were from the respective games he was defeated in, with Klump originating in 1 and Kaboom in 2. I am willing to bet that maybe Klampon was referring to Krimp saying it was the electric barbecue, who was from 3, but I don't believe that was explicitly stated. That said, I love the detail behind that.

The fact that the voice acting and directing is all near identical to the animated series easily makes this some of the best Donkey Kong fan work I've ever seen

That parody of the DK Rap honestly sent chills down my spine. And the fact that this was all leading into King K. Rool joining Smash Bros at last makes this even better than it already was.
That insult about climbing to the heights of Klump's devotion then taking the lethal plunge down to his IQ was an amazingly high quality burn. Perfectly in character too!
The funny thing is, it's even an understandable mistake. Putting aside they've had no idea where K. Rool is for the past ten years - who would ever have expected his first name to be *Keith* of all things?

K. Rool's crumbling mental stability is exemplified so greatly in this animation. Almost every scene leading up to his volcanic breakdown is a symphony of madness. Truly a stunning homage to the Kremling Kommander's video game history and exile.
Its hard to see but does he use puppets for his fellow kremlings or are they just... you know..

I love the difference between the imposing, emotionless DK from K Rool’s fantasy contrasted with the goof he is when we actually see him. A really nice creative choice that works on a ton of levels.
Just goes to show K Rool sees DK as Batman or something with how imposing and formidable he thinks Donkey Kong is.
I’ve never seen the Donkey Kong cartoon but Benedict Campbell has an absolutely amazing voice that absolutely fits K.Rool despite being nothing like what I thought he’d sound like in my head
The monologue at 5:40 made me realize that Benedict Campbell would be a 10/10 Joker.

I know you've already done a lot of smash content already, Kyzerz, but if you were to do just one more K Rool video to the audio of Tip the Scale I would love it so much
You don't have to though. I know you've been doing a lot of other things too and honestly the breadth of K Rool Kontent you already have is amazing enough on its own
Hearing Benedict Campbell as K Rool again was such a treat, i *always* loved his voice for K Rool in the the show , he stole the show and his energy was always a treat to see
Not gonna lie, his was the best voice on that show.
I totally understand Steve Mayles (creator of K Rool) potentially not liking the lack of threatening aura from the tv show’s rendition of the character, when he said he wasn’t a fan of that portrayal, but how could you not at least appreciate the broadway-quality singing voice and the range Ben Campbell has?
Well this rendition sits as a near perfect middle ground. It has the shows flamboyant energy while retaining the game's petty scheming and unhinged aggression.
He hasn't voice King K. Rool, since the show ended way back in 2000, he's still got it.

K. Rool is so glorious in this! His mannerisms, his musical aptitude, the way he weaves words together. That description of how dumb Klump is at the end was a thing of beauty.

DK's actor is always the most cited example but there are definitely other great singers. K. Rool in particular. Though I'd say there are some other standouts. Funky and Cranky have very fun albeit unprofessional sounding singing voices, for example.

If I’m not mistaken, one of the composers who worked on the recent Mario movie was made aware of this project and their response was pretty positive.

@@lucretiaderloshon Nah, Klampon was actually voiced by J.P Baas. They specialize in music production and gained quite a bit of an online following back about a decade or so ago from their Karkat(Homestuck) voice acting.

I like how despite being based on the incarnation from the cartoon, K. Rool here still has an intimidating presence here, a perfect blend of comedy and a genuine threat, with a dash of tragedy.
I think an interesting contrast is the fact that arguably everything between the initial basement scene and the Kremlings finding him was all in his head. Meaning that his terrifying presence is how K. Rool sees himself, but to his enemies like Kong, he's so inconsequential as to be forgotten.
I like how they try to make us feel bad and take the Kremling side then the bartender’s just like “yeah, if he wasn’t such an imperialist we woulda been fine” 😂
To be honest i see it both ways, DK basically invaded and destroyed the Kremling's homeland in DKC 2, sure it might've been as self defense, but the ruins being kremling themed in DKC 1 to then be retconned in later stuff like Returns makes me think about who actually was on the island first
@@Duskool That island was totally fucked from the beggining, and Krusha states multiple times that K Rool treats them all rotten. And it wasn't even DK. It was Diddy and Dixie and I wouldn't call running away and/or defending themselves to reach the top of the island "invading". They did destroy it though, no doubt about that.

This little comment section made me realize that there's also a layer of tragedy to the Kremling's. Maybe things between them and the Kongs could've been better if they didn't have a leader like K. Rool.

I came from Vinny too, and having had no real knowledge or attachment to DKC before he reacted to the songs, I’m SO glad he did. I have such a new appreciation for this franchise and the people who continue to make amazing content like this.

I like the combination of King K Rool’s personality from the games and the cartoon. Like the show he has a faux-posh accent, robust vocabulary, and seems to frame himself as a benevolent boss (and sometimes might actually be at times), but beneath that lies his game-variants attributes: that being someone who values abject cruelty as a virtue and wants nothing more than to feed his desire for petty vengeance and conquest regardless of consequences, even if it means his kremling krew suffers.

Got to love how accurate this is to even the most minuscule of facts about the character- Primarily how he doesn’t even like Bananas in the first place. DK Jungle Climbers will forever hold a place in my heart growing up.
That's kinda up in the air. The manual for DKC1 stated that the Kremlings stole the Banana Hoard for it's nutritional value; but there could have been a number of reasons. Some suggest that it was to starve the Kongs; or if you go by the cartoon's notion that the Banana's give DK strength, you could infer that it was specifically to weaken Donkey Kong himself so that it'd be easier to defeat him and conquer the island. TH-camr Slick Frame's Ask Mario fan series suggested that DK Island's bananas may have mystical properties, as the Tikis used them to make more of their number.
Based on DKC3, I once theorized that K. Rool had KAOS in the works since DKC1 and found the Banana Hoard to be an ample power source. My idea was that is why he stole them in DKC1 and tried to ransom Donkey Kong for them in DKC2; then, by DKC3, he decided to get the Banana Hoard's energy straight from DK and Diddy, who of course eat the bananas, by using them as organic batteries for KAOS.
Regardless, I still say it's up in the air. It could indeed be as simple as the bananas of DK's Banana Hoard are so delicious and nutritious that they are envied by many. I mean; Mugly, the Scurvy Crew, and Thugly were seen eating them before being possesed by the Tikis.

I watched this a few days ago. Naturally, I was blown away, absolutely everything was perfect. It really stuck with me, and mulling over it for a few days I've come to a realization; this short felt like it had what the recent Mario movie was lacking.
The Illuminations Mario movie gets all the details of the Mario series down perfectly. Visually, it's a perfect macrocosm of the brand. It worships its source material to a fault. However, it shows little interest in the people, the artists, behind the series and characters. A beloved voice cast is set aside for celebrity actors, ill-fitting to the characters, so the studio may pat themselves on the back when one of them wins an award, making them look good by association. Grant Kirkhope, who's voice is literally in the movie, is not mentioned in the credits. Same with David Wise, who's compositions are used. Pop songs are implemented for broader appeal and so forth... It is a love letter to a brand, but not its creators.
Meanwhile, this short, is the other side to the coin of the Illuminations Mario movie. This short has reverence not just for the series and characters, but also all the artists behind them, that brought them to life. It has admiration for the community ever dedicated to these creations.
The star of the show, King K. Rool, is not voiced by the biggest name they could hire, nor the cheapest option who'd still do a decent job. It is the very same man who voiced him nearly 30 years ago, reprising his role once more, delivering a performance as if he has not aged a day. DK himself only plays a small role in this short, yet is also voiced by the original actor from the show. The DK Rap is parodied, yet its original creators still credited. A song from the DKC TV show is used as credits music, again, the original creators are acknowledged. Cast members who have since passed away are honored. K. Rools real name being "Keith Krudd Rool" is a nod to his original character designer, Steve Mayles. The "#KROKTHEVOTE" carved into the table, in reference to how it was the fans, under the banner of the Kremling Kampaigner, who in the end brought the Krokodile King back into the spotlight once again.
Every tiny little aspect of this short oozes with this reverence of the media and the people who's work and artistry went into crafting it!
And all this is not to mention the incredible production values here! From the animation to background to lighting to acting, everything feels perfect! The writing is dark, yet humorous, perfect for a tale about a villain! Another gripe I have with the Mario movie is its shallow and rushed character motivations, something I do not feel here at all, despite the drastic difference in runtime between the two productions.
The moment where all the Kremlings are chanting and K. Rool joins in and declares "I am Kremling! I am King!!", I get goosebumps. I want to see this krook succeed! I want him to get away with stealing the hoard and torching the jungle! I want him best his lifelong adversary and rival! I want to see evil triumph this time!
I think that if a villain song makes you feel such things, it's a highly successful one.
Ultimately, the realization should be that most big corporate productions simply cannot achieve the spirit that lives in this short. They're bound by brand identity and studio politics and have to appeal to the sensibilities of advertisers. Independent creators meanwhile lack many of these chains and as a result can soar.

I mean I agree with everything barring maybe the fact a big company couldn't create something like this, which they could, and that changing the voice cast was inherently bad (not like the Mario cast barring Martinet's characters are static), also it kinda aged poorly considering Charles recently retired from the character.
It’s funny, in a way, that in K’Rool’s delusion, the Crystal Coconut was included. It was a major element in the cartoon, and it implies that it was eventually found to be useless, cause Donkey Kong wouldn’t just leave it, even in K’Rool’s delusion.
While we were working on this project, I’d been busy squirreling away world-building and adding to our lore.
In an attempt to discourage and prevent the further harassment of K. Rool and his Kremlings, DK reduced the original Crystal Coconut into thousands of less powerful duplicates and scattered them across the globe.

Think of it this way, in Venture Bros there was a goth girl that Dr. Orpheus fathered, she was a recurring but prevalent character that was Dean's love interest.
She was conveniently written off when Doc Hammer and Mrs. Hammer were going through a divorce. Now it's a cardinal sin that she continues existing.
I'm willing to bet because of the massive Rare fallout, they wanted to scrub their existence like that Goth Girl, who was never mentioned again, not even in the final movie.
The fact that I was a part of this means the world to me. Benedict Campbell IS the voice of K. Rool. So much has already been said but this is the perfect portrayal of the king and I sincerely hope someone at illumination sees this and hires you. This is brilliant.

Between fan projects like this and the fact that a letter of thanks was sent to them when K Rool was added to Smash (something I don't think any other character inclusion has prompted though I may be mistaken) I think they've seen that the Kremling Krew is still beloved to this day. Here's hoping that the recent increase in DK Merch like the Lego Sets is a sign of things to come, and just maybe we'll finally see K Rool's glorious return.

8:07 "keith" and "krudd" are both references - after k. rool was announced for smash, gregg mayles said in a tweet that the k didn't have anything it officially stood for, and suggested it could be something silly like keith. in early concept art, there was a sketch for a kremling named "krudd," whose design evolved into k. rool. so, keith krudd rool (it's a very handsome name!)
