Is this my Christmas gift? Thank you very much for sharing me to your audience and your kind words. You add some great and interesting informations to my helmet video. The video was my second video I ever made in English, so it's not the best quality and I still used the original German word "Schaller" for the sallet (it's the most iconic German helmet), but not a real excuse for my bad English. Thank you again for sharing my channel. ❤
Hey man, love your stuff keep it up! I think your English is great, you are perfectly capable of explaining historical stuff which isn’t easy to do. But what really amazes me is the cinematography of your videos. You’ll have to teach me how to get those beautiful shots.
@@metatronyt the origin of the sallet is from Germany. It was the most common helmet of German military in the late middle ages and one of the big export products of that time. 😅
Awesome video as always. I am small TH-camr, and I think that for small channels the most important thing is to get good presence from the beginning. If you are not popular, people won't care even if you have the best videos and the best content on platform. I am not beginner anymore, but I know how hard it can be (and honestly if I haven't used a lot of Famester, I would have quit a long time ago. It made everything much easier for me, especially getting to 1000 subs and view hours).
My friend introduced me to Dequitem earlier this year. He sent me a video and said 'I don't know what this is but I knew you'd like it.' I loved everything about it. As beautiful as his videos are, I sometimes sit with my eyes closed and just listen to the armour clanging. Happy to see one great channel recognizing another here.
Dequitem is one of my absolute most favorite armored fighting channels. This guy really knows his stuff and knows how to fight! Very cool content indeed. I really hope that Metatron covers more of his videos for us to all nerd out on!!!!
I've seen a couple of this guy's videos. My favorite is the flower field fight because of the beautiful cinematography-I love the warm, vibrant red of the flowers contrasting with the cooler colors of the surroundings; and it reminds me of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, especially when I duelled the wayfaring knight because it happened in a flower field.
3:02 - although it is unrelated, for those curious, that's a depiction of one of the most important, yet one of the least well known battles in the Hundred Years War between England and France - The Battle of Aljubarrota, which was fought by the Portuguese against the Castillians in 1385, being supported by the English and the French respectively.^ The portuguese victory allowed not only the cemeting of the House of Avis hold to the throne, but also openned the gates to start of the Age of Discovery and allowed for an alliance between England and Portugal, through the treaty of Windsor, to perpetuate itself over the centuries, becoming the oldest in the world. Man I love HIstory.
There are lots of good German history TH-camrs. My fav is Geschichtsfenster www.youtube.com/@Geschichtsfenster although he does not do English vids so far. Like Metatron he does a lot of critical comentary on mainstream TV history documentaries and they even reacted to his criticism, which was hilarious.
Of course fighters will wear a "frogmouth" helmet as long as one's available. If you're a wealthy knight with a choice of helmets, you'll select what best serves your needs in battle, tournament, or judicial duel. But if your choice is a small iron cap (or no helmet at all) versus a frogmouth helmet of course you'll wear the helmet. Every available weapon and piece of armor would be brought out of storage and find a place in an army going to war, even gear that might be old, past its prime, out of fashion, not ideal -- but better than nothing.
Newer buhurt player here that finally ordered my set of custom armour half a year ago, yes buhurt padding is not historical, but it is definitely for the safety. The helmet is also much thicker 1.5mm for duels, 2+ min for melees (group fights). The added thickness and padding adds to the bulk substantially. I use 1mm titanium plate armour with 1.5mm on the back plate, with hardened steel helmet, gauntlets, and joints.
I’ve watched several of this guys videos. Very impressive cinematography and he demonstrates the less lethal use of accurate arms in action. It’s very violent even in sparring, it hits home what life and death fights looked like. He also dispels myths on mobility and lethality of weapons against plate armor.
i really hope you see this im a veteran of 14 years you make an interesting point about minefields hollywood makes it seem like when soldiers realise they enter a minefield everyone stands still and slowly backtracks or finds the mines this isn't true what actually happens is you grab the maimed guy and you all sprint out of the minefield the way you came as fast as possible this is because minefields are rarely left unattended there will usually be several machine guns or snipers covering them
I was looking through your channel recently trying to see if you had covered his channel, but I wasn’t able to find any videos. Very happy to see you covering him!
something i don't think a lot of people consider is like you said their concept of risk. we live in such a different world to them that to judge the decisions they made during war is useless i mean we are talking about a people where most peasants and even some nobles didn't care for concepts like cleanliness or proper protection it was simply harsher times and that made harsher stronger people that didn't feel a need to worry about things as much we can see a little of this in our armies where a solider because of training or temperament will be more open to go to a jungle or mountain than a civilian and if its an order from the country they enlisted for then they have and will go to hell and back for them
I don't understand the flack for reaction videos. You are one of the few channels i have seen truly make transformative content doing it. T. Folse here on youtube is one of the best aswell, give it a watch on your free time 👍
I think something that’s forgotten with these TH-camrs is that arms and armour is a particular niche even within history and scholarship. Whilst yes, of course it’s best to strive for accuracy in all things at large, it’s not overly necessary to understanding most historical theories/concepts.
Good stuff--they go hard in the duels and I had a few sympathy winces! And I would never have known to subscribe to his channel without this video--never has he been recommended by TH-cam. So I thank you very much!
My two favorite medieval youtubers coinciding! Dequitem has done some cool videos talking about Eastern weaponry and equipment and how it would be used in the context of fighting a European armored opponent, and I think it would be super cool to see you two collaborate on a discussion about it, since you're well versed in the equipment of feudal Japan
Thank you for the recommendation. His duel / fighting videos got me reinstalling M&B Warband. Brutal, yet, clunky. The kind of medieval grit that I very rarely encounter being confidently depicted. Also, because of this, ytalgorithm graced me with _"Armored MMA"._ A thing I never knew existed, and I never knew I wanted.
As far as risk goes, think about modern warriors. We were amd are facing long range weapons and use small plates that cover a small portion of the chest an ld maybe the back depending on your role. Movement, skill, and tactics keep us from wearing unbrearable suits of bullet proof armor. Also enough armor to keep you impervious to enemy fire would crush you under it's weight. Light and fast beats heavy and a target.
Raf! I loved this video. Been following Dequitum for years and I always remark at how small his following is. Ofc you know him- you have incredible taste. 😂 I know this because you’re a fellow WHF Bretonnia player. May the Lady bless you sir. 🙏 🗡️ I’ve done Buhurt in the US by the way, and we all have a layer of modern concussion padding in our helmets, but that is all. You are permitted to put more padding in your rig, but most people don’t. I have noticed that Buhurt tends to attract the largest, meanest, “tree stumps” of human beings. So these linebackers make the rest of us look chunky as hell! Lol Hope it helps. Thanks again for sharing Dequitem’s channel. He is one of a kind, and deserves a way larger following. (PS: he does a very interesting set of videos where he uses a polehammer to attack armor pieces to show its effectiveness, or lack thereof. Very interesting and you might be inspired to do another video from it.) Merry Christmas to you and your wife. Be well.
Wow, thanks for the link. What a nice channel. PS: my first thoughts on this scene in the poppy field: "That gotta be in-game graphics from Kindom Come Part III.." 😉
Btw. The 12th century style armor actually did pretty well. Regarding 12th century armor. He and every sane person reenacting and fighting in such armor (maille) will wear a thick gambeson, despite it not being historically correct. At that time, maille was a stand alone armor, who was worn without a thick gambeson - maybe a thin arming jacket or thick tunic/cotte was worn underneath it and that's it. There is no written and or iconographical evidence, who supports thick gambesons under maille during that time. Gambesons and maille hauberks were worn as a stand alone armor. In our modern times, the padding is needed, because we need to go to work on Monday. I personally would rather wear authentic armor and not enter a battle (with partially crazy opponents) than to look like a Michelin man or get hurt.
