One of the things I really like about Nick Hodges (History Buffs) is that he balances historical accuracy with making an entertaining movie. As long as the creators are showing RESPECT for the historical people and events, he's pretty forgiving of them trying to make an engaging, entertaining movie. He'll also point out when being historically accurate actually makes a movie worse (See his review of “Alexander”). He reviews the movie as well as the history. A good example is his review of “The Death of Stalin.” The film is obviously a historically based satire, with exaggerated characters and a darkly humorous spin on events, yet still has some surprisingly accurate depictions. Even though it's obviously a comedy, it's surprisingly true to the 'spirit' of what went on (I enjoyed both the movie and Hodges' review of it). You might enjoy his takes on Rome (Seasons 1 and 2), 300, Alexander, and The Last Samurai. Some of my personal favorites are Gettysburg, Band of Brothers, Midway, and A Bridge Too Far.
I am so surprised you are just finding out about the History Buffs TH-cam channel. It is one of the best channels, aside from yours, elucidating the historical inaccuracies with many films. The editing, research, and explanations are all top notch.

8:09 Johnny Weissmuller rode a female black rhinoceros in the 1934 film, "Tarzan and His Mate". For that sequence, the rhino was imported from the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, Germany. Weissmuller did the stunt himself and got away with only minor abrasions to his legs and groin area. The sources I've read do not say whether the rhino was tranquilized, however, I doubt that given the very unsophisticated state of veterinary pharmacology in 1934. GLADIATOR (2000) was a GREAT and EPIC film. It didn’t NEED a sequel. Like GODFATHER (1976). The 1st GODFATHER adapted the GODFATHER book from 1969, which only gave us 1945-1955 of stuff, which the 1st film PERFECTLY shows with a PERFECT ending. GODFATHER 2 was unnecessary and GODFATHER 3 was …. Meh … why? NOT necessary 😀

Ridley Scott doesn't care about historical accuracy and has said that in the past. He's more interested in making a movie that's fun to watch and epic. He's never claimed that his movies are historically accurate.
Well... it's the fact that he basically tells people to pound sand when they call him out after he takes "creative liberty" to ridiculous levels. Ain't gonna lie, I love watching the dude's movies... but I also hope somebody makes a "biopic" of him that's less accurate than the Weird Al movie. And then when he calls it out as BS, they just respond with "pfft, how do you know, were you there?"
He said in an interview that when historians complain about historical inaccuracy he responds "were you there? No? stfu then." He also told a historian that interviewed him "get a life". He certainly disrespects and dismisses history and historical research. And seems to think he's above them. That somehow movies don't need to be historically accurate because nobody knows for sure anyway. Except him, I guess. He has an extremely arrogant and disrespectful attitude. That's the main problem.
he doesn't want to be historically accurate, that is fine. then he just shouldn't make historic movies, because he makes a fool of himself. especially if the movie is also not as entertaining as he claims it ought to be. Gladiator 2 to Gladiator is what is Ep.7 to Ep.4 in Star Wars - an uninspired copy of the main story with sweaty tryhard oneupping tendecy in details. and a waste of some good actors.
I'm so glad you love History Buffs. Every time I watch history stuff I come back and see if you've done something about them worried they're actually garbage. XD This is a relief.
His Zulu review is one of my favorites, actually introduced me to the movie, same goes for the master and commander one. Although neither of those are ancient history
The Death of Stalin I would recommend There is so many good ones, but I love the death of Stalin because, its an underrated movie, a less well known movie, and a fascinating story unexpectedly but masterfully adapted to comedy. (Its kinda crazy to turn such a horrible event about horrible people into a comedy but I think it works really well.)
I would really like to see you do more history buffs. I’ll give 5 suggestions. 1. Apocalypto 2. Braveheart 3. The last samurai 4. Agora 5. Goodfellas for more modern history.

Just out of curiosity have you ever played "Ryse: son of rome?" Its kinda an old game now but just wondering what you think of it. I'm sure there are plenty of historical inaccuracies but the campaign was fun.
I was thinking about posting that, but its a debatable film for some. I saw it once, and remember it being cool but overall not my favorite. I’ll watch it again based on your input! Thanks!
Metatron! Being Italian, perhaps you know the 2001 TV miniseries Crociati? I can find it dubbed in English, but if you know of anywhere to find it in its original Italian with English subtitles, please let me know, and thanks for the content.
Really liked this video. Do more on the History Buffs, such as the ones done on the films, Master and Commander, Waterloo, Alexander, and the TV series Rome.
I could understand the criticism of historical accuracy in Ridley Scott's films if Ridley Scott cared about historical accuracy. He doesn't. His job is to entertain not educate. He makes big, stupid spectacles. It's pure fantasy. He puts things on the big picture screen that you could never see in real life. "I don't care if sharks in the arena are impossible. Sharks are cooler than alligators. I can see a dumb alligator on my golf course. I've never seen a shark jump out of a water hazard on the ninth hole and eat my ball." - Ridley Scott probably Now, I would love to see a historically accurate movie about gladiators, or Scipio, or the Ides of March. But if it had Ridley Scott's name attached to it I wouldn't bother. Either Martin Scorsese or Oliver Stone. Someone with a bit of skin in the game.
HOW HAVE YOU NEVER COME ACROSS HISTORY BUFFS?!?! I always assumed you had. What's next? Just heard about Shadyversity yesterday? Recently heard of Skallagrim? Saw some channel called "Schola gladiatoria" last week?
Well this was surreal. Just watched my first video of his (it was Chernobyl actually - would love to hear Meta's thoughts on it, any chances?) and now I'm ... watching Meta that's watching him.
His Kingdom of Heaven review was one of his most important, because it exposed an anti-christian/anti-west revisionism that most people fell for. Ridley is either some kind of orientalist or the bias was some kind of "clap back" at the anti-Islamic sentiment of the mid-00s due to al qaeda and such
i watched the directors cut of kingdom of heaven so I had no idea what the theatrical version is like if that’s what you watched, but I heard it’s bad from most. I didn’t see the anti Christian message in the film, it’s more like anti religious fanaticism.

@@mattm8870 sorry, the title in English is Sins of Rome 1953. You can find the full film on youtube. Ill edit my original, thanks.
@@smithryansmith Well again its not hollywood but Italian.
I might suggest the channel Creganford, very good information
GLADIATOR (2000) was a GREAT and EPIC film. It didn’t NEED a sequel.
Like GODFATHER (1976). The 1st GODFATHER adapted the GODFATHER book from 1969, which only gave us 1945-1955 of stuff, which the 1st film PERFECTLY shows with a PERFECT ending.
GODFATHER 2 was unnecessary and GODFATHER 3 was …. Meh … why? NOT necessary 😀
Been waiting for you to do a review of one of my favorite channels for long form content, glad to see they didn't disappoint!
Hope you watch more History Buff videos. Ive been watching him since he released the first Gladiator video, dudes a really underrated creator.
I saw this after watching your initial impressions which gave me a decent foundation to appreciate his humor here.
Around 12:10 alligators are brought up and before that I noticed one 'climbing' the bow of a ship @10:00
A great Channel acknowledging another great Channel. History Buffs doesn’t get the attention he deserves.
Oh you will LOVE him! I can’t wait to see you enjoy his stuff, he’s great fun. I love when he gets so frustrated his little cartoon image does a face plant on his desk! Lols. He’s just your type of people Metatron! 😊💜🤣
Can’t wait to see more of this combo
Ridley Scott doesn't care about historical accuracy and has said that in the past. He's more interested in making a movie that's fun to watch and epic. He's never claimed that his movies are historically accurate.
Well... it's the fact that he basically tells people to pound sand when they call him out after he takes "creative liberty" to ridiculous levels.
Ain't gonna lie, I love watching the dude's movies... but I also hope somebody makes a "biopic" of him that's less accurate than the Weird Al movie. And then when he calls it out as BS, they just respond with "pfft, how do you know, were you there?"
@@themulattomaker2602That would be hilarious.
You can't go wrong with ANY of the videos on his channel, they are all expertly researched and presented.
His Zulu review is one of my favorites, actually introduced me to the movie, same goes for the master and commander one. Although neither of those are ancient history
glad you found the History Buffs channel, he's great
Braveheart and Patriot is where he gets the most unhinged
The Death of Stalin I would recommend
There is so many good ones, but I love the death of Stalin because, its an underrated movie, a less well known movie, and a fascinating story unexpectedly but masterfully adapted to comedy.
(Its kinda crazy to turn such a horrible event about horrible people into a comedy but I think it works really well.)
I would really like to see you do more history buffs. I’ll give 5 suggestions.
1. Apocalypto
2. Braveheart
3. The last samurai
4. Agora
5. Goodfellas for more modern history.
Hey Metatron, I heard from Mr.Terry History that he invite you to his show called History Showdown. It's like a history quizez and the participant is other history youtuber. I would love to see you collab with him, being a part of the quiz and compete with other history youtuber.
Just out of curiosity have you ever played "Ryse: son of rome?" Its kinda an old game now but just wondering what you think of it. I'm sure there are plenty of historical inaccuracies but the campaign was fun.
Ridley Scott success:
Alien
Blade runner
Legend
Thelma louise
Gladiator
Black hawk down
American Gangster
The martian
I was thinking about posting that, but its a debatable film for some.
I saw it once, and remember it being cool but overall not my favorite.
I’ll watch it again based on your input!
Thanks!
Ridley Scrotus is a scrotum, what means fool one in my country.
BR and TL were rubbish, too. The Duellists was his best film.
Legend was a famous flop.
Metatron! Being Italian, perhaps you know the 2001 TV miniseries Crociati? I can find it dubbed in English, but if you know of anywhere to find it in its original Italian with English subtitles, please let me know, and thanks for the content.
The sharks were so anarchronistic that they might as well have had frikin lazer beams in their heads.
You're gonna LOVE HistoryBuffs. He's amazing! I wish he uploaded more consistently, because i can watch his videos all day.
Glad you found him. Pity he doesn't do much content. The best is his review of Narcos.
Really liked this video. Do more on the History Buffs, such as the ones done on the films, Master and Commander, Waterloo, Alexander, and the TV series Rome.
His ROME Season One video is one of my favorites.
History Buffs is a great channel, I learn so much. I get so happy every time a new video from them are released. I look forward to your reactions.
I've never seen a shark jump out of a water hazard on the ninth hole and eat my ball." - Ridley Scott probably
Now, I would love to see a historically accurate movie about gladiators, or Scipio, or the Ides of March. But if it had Ridley Scott's name attached to it I wouldn't bother. Either Martin Scorsese or Oliver Stone. Someone with a bit of skin in the game.
I'm honestly surprised you hadn't seen any of History Buffs content before this. Many of his reviews seem like they would be up your alley.
HOW HAVE YOU NEVER COME ACROSS HISTORY BUFFS?!?!
I always assumed you had.
What's next? Just heard about Shadyversity yesterday? Recently heard of Skallagrim? Saw some channel called "Schola gladiatoria" last week?
His release schedule is... patchy? Inconsistent? So he rarely pops up on the recommendations.
I have followed History Buffs for a _very_ long time. Glad you picked them up! Certainly check out his Waterloo (1970) and Zulu reviews!
Madness? THİS İS POMPİİİİİİİİİİİİİ!!!!!!!!!
It is gratifying that Metatron has discovered Nick Hodges of "History Buffs." You have Truth in Movies as your common focus.
Well this was surreal. Just watched my first video of his (it was Chernobyl actually - would love to hear Meta's thoughts on it, any chances?) and now I'm ... watching Meta that's watching him.
Honestly, I am surprised that you have just heard about this guys channel but I'm stoked and would loooove a colab between you two!
It’s okay to be Anglo Saxon
Based.
It’s ok to be a drater
it's not
@@ItalMiser117 It is though.
@@alexfilma16 not when it comes to ancient roman movies lol
A crossbow??? WTF? And a "trenchbucket" on WHEELS??? Small wheels at that...
@@Jeremiah-h4u If you watch the History Buffs episode, he talks about the misrepresentation of Saladin and the Mamaluks are being far too nice and tolerant, its towards the middle to end of his video
@@Elecat1996True. In the film Saladin let the Christians in Jerusalem leave the city unharmed even though in reality many were massacred or enslaved.
I've been subbed to History Buffs longer than I've been subbed to you. He's awesome and the production value of his videos is amazing.
hell yeah love the history buffs I reckon you would love the review he did for hbo Rome one and two its soo good you would love it
Hey Metatron, I'm surprised you'd never heard of Nick Hodges (History Buffs) before. I started following him a few years ago and around the same time I found your channel. I enjoy and completely agree with you both of you. Also I'll be waiting eagerly for the day you and Shad get to finally duel.
I am atill waiting for HB to wreck the woman King.
Worried he lacks the spine to because of politics.
He probably has PTSD after Napoleon. We might never see a video again.
History Buffs is easily my favorite channel on youtube. I rewatch his old videos all the time. And of course his new ones.
Yesss
Gladiator 3 is gonna have an Abrams main battle tank in the coliseum 😂😂😂
Or sharks with fri***** laser beams on their heads.
2:40- well, Scott also gave us Bladerunner.
History Buffs is such a good channel. One of the best historical channels out there. Besides the Metatron of course.
I’d also add Tasting History with Max Miller for the foodies.
@jawo8754 Yup.
This is a nice surprise. For some reason, I always assume all the big TH-camrs know each other. I've subscribed to them for a few years, They're great.
*I LOVE History Buffs!* - It is a Rabbit Hole of History you are going to enjoy, my Dear Metatron.
History buff is one of the best channels I find him very fair when it comes to movies
