“Lack of diversity and inclusivity”… the game has monkey, wolf, tiger, frog, snake, all kind of animals. It has the elements of Buddhism and Taoism coexist in harmony. Calling the game lack of diversity and inclusivity is absurd and myopic.

as a Chinese and bi person, the controversy makes no sense. If they were creating their own plot based around original places, original lore, and original characters, DEI should still be a choice of the developers, not some organization, but I could see their sense. BUT WITH A GAME DIRECTLY INSPIRED BY A 500 YEAR OLD CHINESE NOVEL, DO YOU REALLY EXPECT THE DEVELOPERS TO ADD IN RACES AND GENDERS THAT WEREN'T IN CHINA BACK THEN? Because that would be completely inaccurate and change a story that has been told to MULTIPLE generations of Chinese into some story about inclusivity and diversity instead of the 100% Chinese legend of the Journey to the West.

Uh, if I am remembering it right, aren't the character's genders in Journey of the West already "not simple"? I mean, pretty sure there is a story about them transforming into girls and there's something about MPREG (this is especially remembered by me because of how absurd it's in my young mind because "how nice" if men could feel the pain of giving birth). Anyway, the story has a plethora of animals transformed into their human image and you couldn't be more diverse than that.
