I remember the Scarface intro, this was return of Moviedrome after 3 years with a new presenter and it was uncut. A big deal back in those days where films were cut to shreds, especially for language.
I was actually supposed to be studying for my Computer Science degree finals the following day. Of course, I got completely caught up in the film and stayed up very late watching it putting aside the studying. Although I did get my degree the classification wasn’t the best.
I miss those days when you could actually discover films, tuning into Moviedrome and watching something you’d never heard of. Sometimes they were rubbish but sometimes you’d see something which blew you away. You just don’t get that nowadays, where thousands of films are at your disposal from streaming services and the only films shown on TV are Hollywood blockbusters.

Cousins was the one I remember the most, especially the Scarface intro which I could probably recite word for word. It was the first time I saw the film, and recall the presentation having a glitch where the widescreen scope seemed to go a bit funny for about half an hour somewhere in the middle. They definitely should have used the powdery BBC2 ident though.

Cousins was more interested in contemporary films from the late 1980s to mostly movies from the 1990s. Though I dipped in and watched the BBCs Moviedrome from time to time, I never really took much notice of it. What interested me more was reading biographies and getting to grips with the stories behind the camera. But Moviedrome was accessible for people who may not have seen films from the 1970s, 80s and 90s that would have gone undetectable for a considerable time. What little I remember about the Cousins years were the improvisational approach that the series took over the Cox years. The one thing I shall say for the much maligned Cousins was his rigid support for Powell and Pressburger’s still under-appreciated masterpiece, I Know Where I’m Going. A film which to this day, remains undervalued considerably by movie fans, deserves far more praise. Cousins came across to some as a big-headed know it all of a film nerd. But his passion for film was always apparent, even if you knowingly despised him. Film appreciation is the key to enjoying all films, even those that might not necessarily be your cup of tea. Especially when someone puts on a watch party for Jaws: Revenge, and then I have to go out and buy the film to watch the movie. 😢😊😂

@VideoTasties I think you better move to Cornwall. 20 degrees today and sunny with blue sky. Apparently, in August, we've got a heatwave coming in. So, fingers crossed.

Nobody has to buy Jaws: The Revenge. Ever.

Mark Cousins didn't have the personable, self-deprecation that Alex Cox had... The former's cadence always iritated me, like he was in love with the sound of his own voice.
