I saw a vendor for them at a local festival (after watching a documentary about it and how it ruined lives) and I was just shocked at how many people were in line-
What was the worst for me was when I needed a job and my supposed friend got me an "interview" for an assured job with a growing telecom company. Of course when we got to the rented business space downtown it turned out to just be a recruitment session for a phone service MLM. Half of the people there (like me) all in interview clothes had been conned into coming by the other half who were their friends promising a job. Several people just straight up got up and walked out loudly complaining "I thought this was for an ACTUAL JOB!" I was too nice to ditch my friend so I stayed to see what their whole scheme was. My "interview" was just the recruiter trying to talk me into the something like $550 startup fee and ways to borrow money/get a loan when I complained that I NEEDED A JOB BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE MONEY. The only reason I gave them even half a thought of consideration afterwards was because they did offer a legitimate product (home phone service) that was actually a good deal at the time. I figured if the rest of my family wanted to save money on their phone plans, we could have just ordered it from my friend cuz I was NOT going to get into that bogus recruiting shit. They understandably said no, so I dropped it and that was basically the end of my friendship with the MLM buddy because he got mad at me for not taking advantage of such an awesome opportunity and wanting to make my life better.
I was approached by an Amway distributor and how I'd be a perfect fit. After listening to him go on and on about how fabulous this was I told him this. "If you show me your profit/loss statement and last year's tax filing, I will join up" Never heard from him again.
I joined it works! Because my boyfriends mom sold it. I did it for like two weeks and then i was like “i literally cannot do this. It’s so embarrassing”. I had to block like all of my boyfriends moms friends who were my upline . Just don’t do it guys. Learn to say no.
When I was a kid, my mom agreed to do a children toys MLM. She bought their $50 starter package that had like $200 worth of toys, then just kept it for me and never sold it. They didn’t make her sign a contract or anything, she just scammed the scammers.

Be careful graduating highschool and the early years of being an adult is a very vulnerable time of your life. Many scammers will try to take advantage of your financial inexperience. I remember my friend in my sophomore year of college tried to get me to join a mlm that sold camping gear and other shitty outdoor products. They had infiltrated the campus and would hold seminar in clubrooms. Luckily I've already knew about how mlm worked from an aunt who got caught up in one. So I was able to explain why they were bad and their dirty tactics. He totally left once everything I said turned out to be true and thankfully didn't lose too much money. Also another *HUGE* scam for young adults is credit cards. Now yes credit cards can be a useful tool don't get me wrong but not the ones directly offered to those aged 18-22. The credit card company are hoping due to inexperience that you'll spend way too much. They'll all send you new credit cards in the mail once a month in hope to hook you in. The interest rates on the cards are usually very high. Lots of people develop huge credit card debt in their early 20s. A good rule for cards I learned is never make a credit purchase you can't easily payoff at the end of the month. Before you make any big financial decisions you should always do a bunch of research.
i’m so looking forward to graduating high school so 5 years down the road i can be harassed by the mean girls who are now military wives and sell arbonne

My older sister was involved in one when she was 18, too. Thankfully she had a stable job and didn't go into too much debt. They seem to target young adults, fresh out of highschool too.
People won’t care\you won’t have to worry if you have like dog hair on your leggings like you might for a class No humans: no other people around so good if you’re self conscious of scared of being judged or whatever (also ties into the dog hair part)

When I was 7 I was friends with this girl whose parents worked at herbalife. Apparently, everytime their daughter friended someone they would invite the friend's parents to a breakfast where they would try to sell them Herbalife at all costs. My parents told them they weren't interested because the death of a family member was correlated to the use of herbalife (it probably caused liver failure). Literally, after my parents told them that, the girl came to school angry at me because we hadn't bought their products. Also, she later told me that at her house they used to call me "Ugly Betty" as a way of mocking me. You could tell that her family where and are still a part of the little amount of people who actually make lots of money from MLM's, and literally their sons and daughters are also a marketing product: all of them have to show how much they workout, how much they travel and in general flex subtly on you so you think that you can get all of that just by buying and promoting their products.
@@multijxde1855 thank you so much, you just made my day! :) and yes thankfully she changed schools, so everything's better now xd I hope you are doing well too
Ooh. I have a story about one of those gals. I was waiting for the professor on the first day of a college class last year. This girl sitting next to me starts to chat with me. I was so excited, I thought I was about to make a friend. I mentioned I was a nutrition major and her eyes LIT up and she started talking about Arbonne. She asked for my number. I knew where this was going to lead, but I didn't want to be rude so I gave her my number. Then, the "hey girl" texts came. And boy, they came. After rejecting her for a month, she stopped texting me. I didn't see her or hear from her.... until, a year later (last month) I get a "hey girl! you are so inspirational and blah blah bullshit" message. I was so offended, mainly because she was saying shit like "you are so influential," like b**** we only talked ONE time. I blocked her after that. The end.
I went through this whole phase of being paranoid about everything even slightly related to pyramid schemes. Why's that? I realized my school's Booster Festival was just a big pyramid scheme where they gave out horrible prizes for us to recruit more members. And those members had to recruit more members, and each member would have to pay one dollar to join the "club". The grand prize was a $250 coupon to the Scholastic Book Fair, so I fricken got 300 people to sign up. 300 people, who each recruited an average of 30 members, who then recruited an average of 40 members, and so on. I was in a pyramid scheme at age 7. Great.
There’s a girl that I went to school with and she joined a pyramid scheme before she even graduated high school, so now her instagram story is just her talking straight to the camera about how her product has changed her life and then tries to get everyone to go to her product parties. Honey, you have 1000 followers and all of them are still in school, they don’t have time for this. She also got really upset when someone called it a pyramid scheme.
My ex friends family got all their kids involved in a pyramid scheme and in her bio she called herself an "independent business owner" 💀 She hasn't graduated yet.
Me too, I didnt know that pyramid schemes were also called mlms so when I first heard someone insult them I was like "wow ok thats pretty rude, its none of your business if their gay" lmao
RIGHT the first time i ever heard the term mlm i was talking with a friend and she was ranting about them and i was so confused because i was like “shes bi.... why does she hate gay guys??” and i felt so dumb when i looked it up akcjxncnsjjs
Do not ever belong to a direct sales business that *requires* you to buy inventory. It's completely unnecessary, especially when there are plenty of companies that let you buy off a consultant's website, letting the consultant get a commission and the company ships it from their HQ. Companies that require you to "front load" create the false impression of sales numbers that are really just consultants buying it in the hopes of selling it.
Dude once upon a time some girl managing at the local Lululemon asked me if I wanted a career op because at the time I was broke, disabled, with nowhere to go. Hell yeah I'm gonna give her my info. A week later she and her mum sit me down in a cafe basically trying to extort that $500 from me, that I kept saying I didn't have, when her mum busts out "Imagine someone was going to see you your dream car, right now, for $500. Would you have that $500?" 'Uh, no, I have $36.43 to my name. When I said broke and homeless, I meant broke and homeless.'. Dude. I wish they took the L but they kept emailing me for years 😭
Ew, sounds like they targeted you specifically because they thought you were desperate and vulnerable. That’s really gross, glad you didn’t buy it dude
I would have been disappointed and told the girl that I thought she was offering me a job at Lululemon. A place that could pay a paycheck for hours worked.
My favorite tactic: the doom and gloom job market scenario. "Oh, I know you have a Master's degree in a science field and want a full time job with benefits and a pension, but I know TONS of women with PhDs who can't find a job and have tons of student loan debt". Sure, you know tons of women with PhDs who joined your MLM downline. Please.
I got one for a woman and when I politely declined saying I was already doing my own thing with making art she got mad saying I ‘wasn’t motivated’ and ‘wouldn’t achieve my dreams’ like so rude too.
I got convinced into one of these MLMs and was too depressed and anxious to even try to make an effort to buy or sell shit 👏🏻 the only one time depression was good to me 😂😭

hey girlie!! 💖💖 you should try my essential oils!!!!!!! they will cure your depression and make you life sooooo amazing!! 💖💖 one set is $300 but it’s SOOOO worth it!
I know that you are joking. But I actually had a "friend " who told me essential oils would cure my insomnia, bipolar and....that she even had some that would help my cats stay calm. I was dying. Hell no thanks but no thanks.
I hate these bc they make self-employment seem cheap and stupid. I’m a self-employed graphic designer, I studied it in college, I work for actual different companies. Yet so many of my ex-classmates call themselves self-employed bc they sell tea on Facebook so I always feel like I have to explain myself when ppl ask what I do because if I just say self-employed they might assume I harass my friends to buy oil or smthg
I remember when Lularoe was first entering the world, my mom and I went to what was advertised as a craft show (you know, with HANDMADE crafts and stuff) and literally EVERY SINGLE ONE of the probably 10 or so vendors there was selling those fucking awful leggings out of the backs of their cars. Most MLM purveyors are guilty of that kinda stuff though. Every craft show I've ever been to, no matter where it is, has at least one poor woman shilling scentsy or tupperware amongst all the other people selling actual handmade and nice things.
I like “pyramid scheme influencer” lmao but ppl have been calling them “hun bots” also lol:) bcuz they always try to hit ppl up like “hey hun...nlahblah join my cult”
Imo that’s probably the worst pyramid scheme, I fucking loathe young living essential oils with a passion. They target desperate people e.g. people who are sick with medical conditions. Also those fuckers use essential oils on their babies and pets, which is SO dangerous, but because it’s “natural” they think it’s harmless...legit fucking hate anyone who is involved with young living essential oils, I will fight them all
Me: Sorry KAREN but since I just graduated high school I don’t have $400 laying around for your PyRaMiD sChEmE Karen: Okay love, if you find yourself interested let me know🤪💞
tell me why the video next to this was "Why Women Are Quitting Their Side Hustle: Leaving LuLaRoe", probably the video that she was talking about in the beginning
“mlm” is also a word for any guys who likes guys (similar to wlw for girls)... and considering i follow quite a bunch of gay dudes on twitter... Multi Level Markets confuse me a lot
That sucks. Herbalife targets Hispanic communities, especially those who don’t know a lot of English. At least, that’s what they said in Betting on Zero.
John Oliver did a really good episode on this where he talked about how Herbalife targets Hispanic communities. It's disgusting. Here's the link (with subtitles in Spanish; not sure if they are needed in this case or not). Not sure if you would be able to get her to watch it, but it might be worth a try: th-cam.com/video/Cy-O4myeUzg/w-d-xo.html
honestly when you watched the video of all the girls dancing to music it reminded me of sororities and when i went through recruitment (thankfully i left like a week in) and it just makes me think that college sororities are basically a scheme. Especially everyone in white like that.
These pyramid schemes honestly creep me out while simultaneously grasping my interest. This shit really ruins lives. One of my favorite episodes of Brooklyn 99 is the nutriboom episode cause its hilarious but also a little to accurate lmaooo
pyramid scheme: That shit you did in middle school when you went around and sold hundreds of dollars of chocolate to people in your neighborhood... to then “win” a 2lb bag of gummy worms
My friend sent me one of those “boss babe” messages the other day. I about near HD a heart attack and probably completely ruined her excited by berating her with all the negatives of MLMs
These "Boss Babes" all have 1 fatal misunderstanding: it's not _their_ business. You're selling an established company's products, not your own. The money you make passes through them before it lands in your bank account. You aren't your own boss. They own you. They succeeded in getting you to join their cult.
Yeah… you aren’t pursuing your own dream, just sucking more people into that of someone else. Basically what you do at an office, minus all the reasons you still work (steady income, expenses covered in pay, less risk, in most civilized countries insurance, etc.)

Just because you said that i am now extremely invested in becoming a CEO and calling myself a boss babe
The arbonne video reminds me of a bad sorority recruitment video.
Daniella Hunt that’s what I was thinking. It looked like a sorority for Gen X women
I’m glad someone else thought that omg
I’m kinda confused, was that the font she was talking about not trusting? It looks like times new Roman
it looks like a cult
Lol true
Good thing my social anxiety made the thought of cold-contacting people so repulsive that I could never have been sucked into one of these scams.
Haha could I interest you in some leggings to overcome ur social anxiety
my 18 yr old sister is actually a "BoSs BaBe" and AVIDLY claims it's not a scam.
*disappointed but not surprised.*
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm laughing because your handle is awesome and I can completely relate to you with regard to your sister
It's sad, most of these schemes involve cult-like brainwashing so she's not just lying to you but also to herself
Brainwashed
My older sister was involved in one when she was 18, too. Thankfully she had a stable job and didn't go into too much debt. They seem to target young adults, fresh out of highschool too.
Sisters, amiright?

Is anyone still confused about the "dog hair/no humans" part
It’s supposed to be a gym you can do at home.
bucca2 or maybe a dog gym!
People won’t care\you won’t have to worry if you have like dog hair on your leggings like you might for a class
No humans: no other people around so good if you’re self conscious of scared of being judged or whatever (also ties into the dog hair part)
"Overcame teen pregnancy..." That's a weird way of describing an abortion.
Or teenage post-partum depression (with or without implications of the child being adopted/legally taken away and placed in a foster home and/or keeping the child-with the occasional guardian-/kinship care by the child's grandparent/s,if available-or not,unfortunately..) alternatively..?

That’s so disgusting oml, that whole family is on smth. I hope you’re good now 🤧
@@multijxde1855 thank you so much, you just made my day! :) and yes thankfully she changed schools, so everything's better now xd I hope you are doing well too
Not gonna lie, but my distrust levels would have gone 📈📈📈
The end.
🤣🤣🤣🤣👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Lol!!! 😂😂😂😂 you are so influential!
Love this story !
I’ve heard them called “hunbots” because they call other women hun in a condescending way, and they use copypastas from their upline like robots
Calling a female in public "hon" is the equivalent of telling someone in the South "bless your heart"
That's how I used the term Ma'am while living up North. It's such a great way to piss someone off without losing your job.
Call me "hon," when I don't know you and you're liable to get smacked.

can we pick a new acronym tho because every time I see “I hate mlms!” I think “what did gay men do to you damn”
What does it stand for in that context?
Miguel Zavaleta “men who love men”, includes bisexual and gay men, similar to “wlw” or “women who love women”, includes bisexual and lesbian women.
Brian SAME! I was so confused looking through these comments

Marxist Leninist Maoists
Great.
Holy fucking shit! Did your school ever get some sort of punishment or stop the festival?😰
Your school must have been gigantic jeez
But also: JAIL. JAIL FOR WHOEVER CAME UP WITH THAT
i think is so funny when people talk about multi level marketing and say “mlm” because i read mlm as men loving men
For a while I thought that’s what people meant when they said that.
It reminds me of m'n'm s cause I don't pronounce mlm and mnm that different 😅😅😅
same
I read it as emlem
There’s a girl that I went to school with and she joined a pyramid scheme before she even graduated high school, so now her instagram story is just her talking straight to the camera about how her product has changed her life and then tries to get everyone to go to her product parties. Honey, you have 1000 followers and all of them are still in school, they don’t have time for this. She also got really upset when someone called it a pyramid scheme.
Yikes

Please.

I've been down this rabbit hole all evening and that was my #1 observation.
Honestly the second worst MLM pyramid scheme is definitely Young Living Essential oils
