  • Installing the new seals on the gear box turns out to be more difficult than I had anticipated.

Ouch! I give you credit for owning it with full disclosure.

I feel you pain :( You will get there!! You should install grease on the seal lips too. Maybe time to machine a tool that is slip fit over the shaft, so it pushes on the seal lip while also pressing on the face of the seal.. Also, seems like possibly that seal ID is slightly too small? Maybe measure the diameter of the shaft where the seal sits?

The next seals i bought were a different brand. Not sure if it was that, or just using another approach the resolved it.

Steve have you got a little room to put a taper on the shaft at the very beginning. Maybe that would help it to slide by. Good luck!

Take a small paper clip and use an acid brush and squeeze the paper clip in the back end of the acid brush and use that to slide around the lip seal and you will fix it. You can use that as well to install atuo type transmission piston lip seals. Same idea and it does work...

Use a thin piece of plastic to Guide the lip of the seal over the edge of the shaft

I ended up using a piece of shim stock, same idea though.

What a job. Could you not have tried using something thin like .001” shim stock between shaft shoulder and walking that seal down over it ??

Hello. I think I tried that on a similar job once and ended up damaging the new seal. I think it might still be a good trick in some instances.

In the video, the shaft looks a little rough. Did you dress it up with Emory cloth before trying to install the seals ? If not,do you think that might have helped?

The area where the seal rides was pretty good. But you are correct, light polishing with emery would be fine. But if there is a groove worn in the shaft, you can try and reposition where the seal rides on it by not driving it fully home in the bore. But if there's not enough room to do that, a speedy sleeve might be available.

Do you had to have the part number of the seals you ordered,I have the same bushhog and gonna have to replace the seals.

I think the seal is part # 1007BH. But you can look it up by model number on either the Howse website or Messicks.

Aggravating seal! Does the shaft have a ridge worn into it that the seal lip is hanging up on?

No grooving, just a nasty sharp shoulder at the transition in diameter. I did eventually succeed.

lol at 2:44 Steve drops the S word, sh1t. Thats nothing compared to the video a few years ago when he went to pick up out board motors from that radio DJ and the guy was handing out endless supplies of the F word.
