    I got the game on release on steam and have to admit I've had alot of the same problems. I love the combat and the weapon variety but each region is a slog of killing dozens of patrols with the same unit variations only to go do it again for their bases, and then in the "home guard battles". The melee needs fixing and the fights need to be more spread out and impactful

    • @powerhousejp
      @powerhousejp ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, spreading out the fights and making fewer of them would help the pacing. If fewer fights would make the campaign too short, then maybe constant battle should also incur fatigue damage to the pilots...or something besides my Liquid Fix supply keeping me from doing constant 24/7 battles with the same few pilots.
      Alternatively, having a greater variety of battle objectives would be nice...or changing spawns so the few alt objectives we do have are possible to achieve without clearing every enemy on the map anyway. Isn't much of a smash-and-grab ambush mission if all the enemies start off alerted and right next to the thing I'm grabbing, you know? 👀

    Just want to add about the melee system for anyone that ends up playing the game, because it is VERY unnintuitive at first:
    Even though the indicator suggests you're going to crash with the enemy, you actually have no collision during the melee animation. Just try to aim so that you go through the enemy at about halfway through your jump distance and make sure you're swinging the correct direction.

    • @doogong

      Thank you! I kept on trying to have the red sword indicator hit the target, and it was never doing damage

    It is an okay game. It follows the mechanics they implement and the timeline system does what it needs to.
    Yes, there are a few lacking information, simulating mobile combat and salvaging loop.
    It is fine, fun in its own way, which is enough for some.
    Definitely needs more variety, things to be done, enemy types and to lower the small hubs, to increase the flow of the overworld map to a degree.

    The loadout system deserves more of a shoutout IMO. It won't be for everyone, but I love picking up parts of bots and carefully inspecting the stats to find the best fit for my build. Melee is, strange, yes, but I didn't find it that unreliable once you understand how it's supposed to work.
    There is a serious lack in the tutorial department IMO. The one we have currently is long, overbearing, frustrating to go through holding your hand and I still felt confused for a lot of stuff (I have 3 mechs already, why can I only send 2 into battle? How does damage actually work?). Some information, like holding control when planning a melee attack to change the swing direction, I straight up had to find on the forums.

    I'm pretty sure the melee thing is a recent bug. Never had this issue during early access.

    • @mimiru69
      @mimiru69 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's not a bug, he was doing melee wrong entirely. I made the exact same mistake when I first started playing. In this game you're meant to fly THROUGH the enemy in order to melee, not stop in front of them. It's really unintuitive, and the tooltip doesn't explain it very well. Imagine it like those Samurai movies where they run past each other and swing their sword when passing the other Samurai.

    • @starburst98
      @starburst98 ปีที่แล้ว

      I saw a video of someone ordering their melee mech to fly through, and instead the mechs just crashed instead of melee.

    • @Folly_Inds
      @Folly_Inds ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The same, melee during the early access was way easier for some reason. What you're supposed to do is align the red portion of the melee hitbox with the mech at the right time.
      For some reason unlike every other attack in the game this doesn't actually track the enemy.

    If you want a mech strategy game, just buy Battletech and mod it. It's got lots of very industrious, very detailed, and only slightly crazed people working to give you all sorts of gameplay depth options based on which mod pack you install.

      What kind of mods should one use to play it?

    • @subtlewhatssubtle
      @subtlewhatssubtle ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jbkruse There are some prime choices out there depending on the amount of depth you wish to invest in. To sum up the three most common ones I see:
      XLRP is great if you want to set up a very lore-accurate, reasonably balanced game and have the patience to work through its admittedly somewhat arduous install process.
      3025 Extended is also lore accurate and expands nicely on the base game with some considerations for future-proofing, including Clantech. Same for Commander's Edition.
      Roguetech is a rabbit hole of engineering, tweaking, and modification that has tons of content and allows you to change almost everything you want in your setup in exchange for significant complexity/difficulty spikes.
      These should be available on Nexus.

    "A long battle could take 30 minutes" Haha, I wish I had such short battles. Did a 4v8 where the enemy had 6 missile launchers, and the battle took 3 hours. I at least felt like a badass when I won, but...good Lord, I'm glad they reduced the spawn rate of enemy missile mechs.
    If you care about a challenge, then the imperfect prediction information is a must, otherwise the game might as well just play itself: the prediction timeline makes aiming and positioning trivial, so the actual skill of the game comes from the ability to intuit the things it *doesn't* tell you, like when to switch targets or boost out of the way of missiles. However, the game has such a great array of difficulty options, and an option for "more accurate predictions" is entirely valid.
    Melee being so hard to aim is a known bug atm. I once tried to attack with the "sword" a dozen times in a battle...12 actual attacks in 10 turns, and got only 1 actual hit even when I knew I lined up the shot on a stationary mech.
    What's not a bug is how repetitive the maps are; I started seeing recycled locations before even clearing the second province, and it felt like I'd seen them all at least twice after the third province. With how long battles can take and how many provinces there are, I'll probably not ever "finish" the game...but I'm still having a lot of fun with the combat, so I'm fine with that.

    • @danilooliveira6580
      @danilooliveira6580 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah the repetitiveness for me is the most valid critique of the game, even though its a valid critique for most similar strategy games. but for me it seem like such a good core. the game has a really good base to build upon. I just hope that they do improve those aspects of the game.

  • @swimmadude66
    @swimmadude66 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Totally agree with every point here. At right about the exact battle you show throughout the video, my frustration surpassed my interest. I don't understand why it would be so hard to show expected damage numbers in the prediction screen to prevent massive overkillings or under-prioritization. Also, attacks by the enemy are shown as a single line, regardless of weapon timing, so missiles often landed just after my shield time, despite the shield action more than covering the labeled "dangerous" time from that mech.
    I want to like this game more than I do, and will be watching for possible patches to fix these QoL and un-fun issues

    My man really saying shit takes over half an hour for a battle? I've had a battle with an enemy twice my threat rating (me; 153 them; 341) and it took me like... ten minutes. tops. My current squad are Two Minigunners, One Sniper, One Shield+Shotgun. We pretty much clean house within at least the first four turns. On any given missions with 'reinforcements incoming' I've only ever had the reinforcements show up once (They're on a turn-timer from mission start; usually 5+ turns). Due to doming my shotgguner in the back, I didn't quite finish the last tank off and we still one turned the reinforcements.
    Yes, the combat is repetitive. But, as per Yahtzee's Three C's I think this game offers a good amount of catharsis. It might be just me, but the sight of two miniguns just hammering my enemy to nothing is so fun. As for the damage prediction... I mean... That's kind of on you?
    I have a very good idea of which enemy is going to die and when due to running so many missions with my current composition and I know what damage I will likely take, Missiles are the only current annoyance because their tracking is too good and dodging is dodgy... Also I've accidentally domed my Shotgunner in the back a few times on my first go (With those minigunners mostly, somtimes my sniper though...) but even still I cleaned house with my remaining three mechs. I don't see any of my battles taking half an hour + personally, but I understand that people play differently to me, and that the campaign tedium is real, too much space and not enough content within said space, methinks.
    Also yea, melee is difficult to use, but you can just as easily go Shotgun; does just as much damage in my experience and again, the cathartic thud of shots on mechs...

    I got it a couple of years ago from epic. I could feel loads of potential and the basic gameplay loop was already quite fun. Just when they introduced the world map I stopped playing to continue when version 1.0 releases.
    So, now it got released and I can't help myself but to feel a bit underwhelmed. It got much more polished and also a lot new features, just not the features I was hoping for. Specifically I was hoping for some overarching story campaign/missions (now it is more like skirmish after skirmish mission), pilots with stats and experiences gain, and a final full fight replay.
    Possibly the developer team was a bit to small for it.

    Combat lacks a bit of omphhh and the sounds lack heavyness or impact as everything plays from far away. The loadout screen its confusing and doesnt show clearly some things, especially overheating stats, a single module could be the diference between heavy heat build up or not, even today im not sure.
    You can use Ctrl to change the direction of the meelee attack, when you attack from the right the stricke starts at the middle of the jump, from the left almost when you reach the end of the jump. Its confusing as hell

  • @madmurdoc7832

    I haave to admit, i am one of those, who can play the same missions over and over again.
    But also, some spicing up would be nice. I was just reminded of the flashpoint-System in Battletech. Just a few, handcrafted, short campains can do wonders to break up the flow.
    What bugs me the most about this game, and is for me the most tedius, is the wait-function. Why can't i just place / move a run or a dash on the timeline, as i can do with shots, this would make planung soooo much more fluid.
    Also, the crafting-part of the game still needs some work, IMHO. The player can not see any stats on the items he is crafting. So i do not know, if i want SMG X or Y, as i don't even know, if the gun has a short firecycle, or a long one, what kind of damage does it do and so on.
    I do hope, several of those issues will be adressed.
    by the way: Does anyone know, how / where to leave suggestions for the devs?

  • @therealbahamut
    @therealbahamut ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yeah, this review pretty much sums it up. Interesting, different, but gets monotonous quickly. There's not enough depth of choice in the customization of mechs, the unlocking of base upgrades or the consequences of event choices. Movement is by and large two-dimensional. The interface, while functional, still has a fair bit of "clunk" to it. The action, once you've figured out the rules of the game, usually boils down to "Whoops, forgot that tiny little detail and now I'm down three mechs in one turn. Time to save scum."
    I also want to like PB more; it just needs a little more time in the oven.

  • @Hammerheadcruiser

    It's a fun game, but not one I can spend a long time with. The core combat needs more variety, and not just in weapons. Having a better idea about when missiles will hit would also be a literal life saver, I've lost several pilots by misjudging when a strike will hit or how much damage it will actually do.

  • @ogaburan
    @ogaburan ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Lol, nothing about the missiles?
    The missiles broke me... game does not keep track of them, some hit u now... some hit u next turn at 'some ppoint'... enemy swarms u with them... they can go through buildings... most can one shot u... and worst of all, they are tedious to avoid.
    Sad, wanted so much to like this game...

    I've been playing since early access. As someone who tries almost every mecha game I can get my hands on this had so much for me to be excited for. Great mech customisation, pilots and salvage placing importance on survivability, and what seemed like a new take on turn-based combat. Unfortunately I agree with all of the negatives; the finicky combat and uninteresting world and maps make it feel more like a proof of concept that overstays its welcome than a proper game. It's really well polished and I think the devs should be proud of what they've made. There's also almost certainly a niche of people who will adore it, and rightfully so. But I think most people will have mixed experience with it, to say the least.

    As for me game lacking in some parts, mainly player to pilot connection and mission variety. Pilots feels like they aren't gaining no skills after fights, they don't "level up" so fresh rookie can be better then mech war veteran and game won't reward you keeping pilots alive. And about missions, if all missions are elimination type, why do I even need to be bothered with side objectives if they aren't insta lose one.

    To me the game has a rock-solid core, but quickly drops off past that. Combat is a lot of fun and the different weapons do allow for some differences in strategy, especially at extremes. However the customization and progression is fairly RNG dependent, even when crafting and getting the resources to build the right stuff is a grind finished off with save-scumming to avoid 10x the grind when crafting gives you a shit outcome. I've got about 30 hours so far in it, i could see that stretching to 40, but unless more enemy types are added or more depth is put in the customization, i doubt it'll pass that and i really really like this kind of game. Once you get used to the systems combat isn't as slow, but it's never fast either. Takes me maybe 8-20 mins per fight depending on what i'm fighting. Tiny patrols are pretty quick and high-escalation reinforced convoys are pretty lengthy.
    It still feels very much like an early-access game, despite claiming to be a full release. Maybe in 3 months time it'll have tweaked what needs to be tweaked and added more stuff on top, but without that it's something to grab on a sale.

    Yeah, I got this game on the Epic game store in its early accss phase, and it was immensely frustrating not having the ability to leave a review, because this game has a very good core, but there's only a core, and absolutely nothing else, and because there's no bloody review functionality on that pathetic excuse for a store front, there was no way to properly explain the problems to the devs, unless people felt strongly enough to literally write the devs an email.
    As such, here it is coming out on steam, and only now are the devs able to actually get the truth of their game, and figure out that it's definitely not 1.0 release ready.

    I agree with criticisms that the fights aren't varied enough, they definitely could have worked to better implement more varied objectives and enemy types. That said, I've played over 150 hours between early access and final release, so - subjectively! - I definitely *don't* agree about the combat getting monotonous after a while, and I'm still having a blast with it. Melee is finicky and unreliable if you follow the "red ribbon" guide, but if you just make your attack path go straight through the enemy, then as long as you move fully past them on the other end (i.e. collide with them *during* the melee dash, but make sure you're not colliding at the end point) then you'll hit reliably. The UI is definitely misleading here, but once you get the knack of it, it's a lot of fun - my melee unit with a big axe basically became a "delete enemy" button by the end of the campaign. :D
