  • You can use silicone mitts for pets (animal grooming) and lightly mist the pads with water before spinning the pad up to "lay the matt" or round it back out if it'd been squished into a square box (as an example)

    I use a DeWalt DWP849X
If I'm going for perfection in gelcoat, I don't use a ceramic (unless a very new boat) I prefer the ease, cost and reliability of Fire Glaze by RMP. Make sure you get all the oxidation out of the gelcoat, get a great finish, clean and strip the surface and then apply Fire Glaze.

There's a "marine" version but it has the same main ingredient as Fire Glaze, just a different lubricant/carrier solution made to be environment friendly. I find it dries rather fast and as I'm in a hot climate, I use Fire Glaze instead of Restructure Marine Polish. I like their Mirasol spray for all the interior furnishings as well.

Hey Lee - Keep the videos coming - love your work!
I have a question that I have not seen you cover - Do you have a routine for polishing/buffing Outboard engine cowls? I have a 2007 Mercury 4-Stoke EFI with the gloss black cowling. It not fiberglass/gelcoat, more like a impregnated plastic that is really glossy. I'm thinking masking off the stickers and taking a rotary yellow pad to it with 3M heavy cut, but I wanted to see if you had any experience with getting the gloss back on the Mercury cowls.

I sometimes enjoy doing one myself. Like a little experiment to see how sweet they can look.
You can use a rotary with a wool pad and compound to smooth out the surface, a foam pad after that. Then use your RO to smooth out the lines left..

I like to do the wet finger tips method because this method still makes a mess. Pretty much you dip your finger tips in a small bucket of water, run the machine at the lowest speed, then rub your finger tips on the wool pad, a lot of that wool will stick to your fingers, like that you save yourself of that wool all over the garage floor. The only true way to top the shedding though is to just put them to use.

I managed to get a bottle of super duty but it had separated. A load of liquid on to top and a solid mass on the bottom. Is there away to bring it back or is fit for the trash ?

Try a bent heavy gague wire in a drill. That sucks.

Hey Lee- I’m workin on a maroon 3 yr old 40ft Seahunter atm with bad oxidation on the hull. Using 3mWool pad+super duty wasn’t getting through. I was hitting spots 2x and 3x and still had ox left…I Wet sanded a section with 600,800 then super duty. But it’s still showing patchy streaks. How would you approach this? I know you don’t like wet sanding but what equipment do you use? The gel coat is actually a bright red(not maroon) after I get through but it’s taking way too long and chewing up compound. Spent 3 days on port side…really frustrating. Any advice would really help. Thanks

Sounds like an older boat than 3-4 years my gosh..
Watch how we get through rough stuff:

Keep sanding. If she needs it, she needs it. Sand for uniform color, then Super-Duty for uniform sheen and then the rest for a shine.
Sorry brother, sounds like you found one that wants to fight back!

It’s been rough. I just finished sanding another test spot. Went 240,320,400,600,800 then SD. Still streaking. It’s one of those boats that makes you want to quit.

Damn, sounds like a problem-child boat. Like, something happened to it years ago, you're trying to fix..
